Wow! Frei Otto it is!

Anyways, is this for construction, or just Rendering? and what
programs have you tried to model this in? I got some low-cost options
that I know of that you could possibly use...

Just for Rendering right now and the working drawings would be done by the
roofing company. It would just be nice to have a simple way of producing
these roofs or complex curves in Revit. I look at Frank Gehry's buildings
and think that maybe the next generation of Revit will be able to produce
easily the drawings necessary to build these buildings.

That's some roofing company! :)

I completely agree. Can't wait until Revit gets Nurbs, or something
like it, that would allow for 'rails' and 'lofts' and the like.

His office uses an IBM product called Catia. It's ment more for
the Manufacturing sector, and only runs on Unix/Linux workstations.
It's very high-end, and very expensive. But, keep in mind, that
Gehry designs everything using paper models, which are then taken
and put into the computer.

One good low-cost option for complex curved surfaces would be Rhino.
This is a Nurbs modeling software made by the same people that
make Accurender. It's $900 bucks. Another would be Truespace, which
also has rendering abilities, and only costs $600. Either of these
would be easy to work with, and very 'organic'; but Rhino will
export to the CAD software better IMHO.

While Maya or Max could do this as well, you might have better
luck with the easyer to use low-buck options.

They specialize in doing just tensile structure fabric roofs.

If it's for rendering purposes only... you may want to try creating the surface using topography.

Tensile structure is a form of building material. Tensile structure covers the area very beautifully and provide unique look.

It is designed by the architectures of fabric structure and brings you to next level of innovation. It is available in various dimensions, colors, sizes, shapes and in accordance to material used.
