When we try to open a *.rfa family file to import a component or any other
kind of family, Revit crashes with a message saying "An unrecoverable error
has occured". It gives the opportunity to save a recovery file, though these
recovery files rarely work in this instance.
The error occurs on importing into any Revit project, even a blank template.
The current version is 5.1, build 20030716_1400. The problems started about
4 days ago, on the previous version build (200305-something). We upgraded to
the latest build in an effort to fix this problem. That didn't work.
Since then, we have completely uninstalled Revit and done fresh reinstalls
of both the latest and previous builds. The problem still occurs.
It is only occuring on one of our PCs though, which leads me to suspect a
conflict with either some other software or corruption of a DLL file.
Has anyone else had a problem of this nature and know of a way to fix it?

Adrian Esdaile

The machine *was* importing families earlier than a week ago, but it started
playing up last Tuesday (we had a deadline!). The OpenGL settings have
always been on - as Wes mentioned this machine has a stonkingly powerful
graphics card in it (which I might add is great for real-time 3d shaded
views!).
I am beginning to suspect that Revit and / or WindowsXP has gone and tripped
over itself and corrupted some system file. I tried reinstalling again
yesterday, this time going right through the Registry and clearing out every
reference to Revit. It seems that Revit doesn't clear it's registry settings
when uninstalled, so I thought it may have left some junk there. To no
avail; it still crashes when I try to load a family.
I have a nasty feeling that this is going to be one of those
format-hard-drive-reinstall-everything situations. *sigh*
Cheers,
