While at a past job they used R14 and an add-on for sheetmetal called
Striker. That add-on added some layers to each drawing created using the
house proto template. Now, when I try to use the symbols that I created then
on my new job (using 2000) AutoCAD crashes when I try to print, giving me a
Fatal Error.

I have tried purging the layers, but they stay put. I try to delete them
using the layer manager but I am told that they cannot be deleted (even
though they have no xrefs, no blocks, etc.). Any suggestions how I can fix
this short of redrawing all of the symbols in 2000?

TIA

Richard

Download the demo version of SuperPurge from Manusoft.
http://www.manusoft.com/Software/SuperPurge/Index.stm

It will allow you to purge anything ("hard purge") even if the layer or item
is being used. Be careful with it though, because it can delete things you
want to keep. However, if nothing else you can use it to figure out why the
layers are unpurgable (i.e. maybe they're defined in a block?) and then fix
the problem from there.

How about write blocking out the drawing? Selecting only what you see should
get rid of unwanted layers.

If you have multiple layouts, that might not be a good idea. ;)

Well, the write block worked ok for getting rid of the layers, BUT when I
went to plot the layout I got a;

"Fatal Error: unhandled c0000090h Exception at 3398b748h." (sans quotes).

Then ACAD crashes back to windows. That is the same problem I was getting
before. Any ideas?

Since I can plot out other drawings using the same color dependent plot
style I am at a loss as to why these drawing (from R14) cause a problem.

Thanks,

Richard

Strictly from my experience, Acad2000/2000i do not like R14 files. I have
no idea why and have not read much about it.

Try creating a new, 'empty' 2K drawing file, then inserting the R14 file
into it.

If that doesn't work, you may have (heavyweight) polylines with varying
vertices. (I know, that "isn't possible"..........but it happens and
generally causes a crash anytime you try plotting the culprit polylines.)

Richard,
Here's a few things I have run in to that have made it difficult to
purge layers:

I have run in to cases where someone put text on the drawing but when
they entered the text they just hit the space bar. So no text is
displayed but Autocad sees it as a valid text string. If the text was
entered on the layer you want to purge then of course it wont allow
you to do it. I think I had to use the FILTER command and have it
select all the text on the drawing. THen I saw the GRIP for the text
show up and the grip was not attached to any text.

I have also seen 3rd party software create blocks with no objects in
the block and then the block is inserted on the drawing and it was
inserted with the layer you want to purge as the current layer. Since
it has no objects in it, you have nothing to see nor select on the
drawing to erase it. Look at all of the block names inserted on the
drawing and insert each one. If you find a block with no objects then
redefine the block by just drawing a line, recreating the block with
the same name. When you do a REGEN you may see some lines show up on
the drawing representing the redefined block. Erase them all and then
you should be able to purge the layer.

View ports had the layers frozen in some viewports. Type VPLAYER then
THAW and then <layername> then ALL.

Hope this helps,
Don

Try to insert your job on a new template.
If this don't work try the old trick:
Frezze Half the layers you have on the drawing and Writeblock as A.DWG
(inserting point 0,0). Then Thaw these layers and freeze the others and
Writeblock as B.DWG (inserting point 0,0). So you created 2 drawings each
containing half the layers from teh original one. Open Each one individually
and purge everything. Then Insert them on a new template using insertion
point 0,0. See What happens.
