I work for a contractor who uses uses Autocad files supplied by various
architects, recently, we got a job with an architect who is using R14 and
his cad department refuses to supply us with files in R12 format, saying that
the conversion process would strip out important information.

We use the files as a background and overlay our info on top of them in
autocad,
we do not need any of the advanced features or capabilities of R14. Our files
are issued as stand alone files, they are not meant to be incorporated into
other systems.

Is there anything about R14 that would prevent them from being able to give
us useable files in R12 format or dxf, or is this just techno-snobbery?

Please save the flame mail, I'm sure that R14 is a wonderful program.

AutoCAD 14 has a feature that will allow you to save as a r12 file and not
lose any of the r14 features, Have the r14 user read the manuals and see all
the promotional material that illustrates this feature.

It is however a complete pain in the you-know-what to "save as R12" 138
drawings in a row for a single submission at preliminary design stage.
It's 8.40pm here in Hong Kong and I've been doing exactly this for the
best part of the day and I'm nearly done. Detailed design will be at
least 2000+ drawings.....It is possible but it turns your mind to mush
and is a complete waste of manhours. In fact it has got to be cheaper to
upgrade your clients software than it is to get the CAD manager to stay
at work for a couple of nights.
It's not so much TECHNOSNOBBERY more good business sense and awareness
of logistics.

I'm off to write a lisp routine to convert the next batch.

maybe it would have been cheaper to buy your client a copy of r14.

Every conversion that I have done for a client who runs R14 has
resulted in changes which are not restored when the drawing now saved
as a R12 drawing is read back into R14. For example, true ellipses
are converted to polyline ellipses, dimension text styles are changed
to use STANDARD, solid filled areas come back as areas filled with
line strokes.
