I know Bayliner uses Unigraphics

MultiSurf by Aerohydro in Maine. See there ads in any quality marine
industry magazine. Used for surface modeling as well as plate expansion
involving developable surfaces. Bundled with packages to produce
hydrostatics and hull speed predictions, surface curvature etc. Our
company, myself included, uses ShipCam and FastShip with General
Hydrostatics for CAM purposes. Three different programs that for yacht
design not producing engineering is a little overboard, and will cost you a
mortgage on your house. The multisurf package for 3 grand or so, combined
with Acad 13, a decent Pentium and a qualified NA will produce quality
results. See Bruce King designs for examples. I dont usually blow there
horn, but their capabilities for the price are extraordinary. Also, keep in
mind no software ever seams to do everything you want perfectly (excellent
surface trimming, poor nurb surface control or whathaveyou), which is a
mystery of mathematical origins within the lofting and designing marine
community.

A boat design company in our building uses MiniCad on Power Macs.
They still do some stuff on the board too.

I use Prolines by Vacanti Software. Dave Vacanti is a designer and
software developer, so he uses what he writes. His home page is at
http://www.serv.net/vyd/ . You can dowwnload demos there.

Here at Chesapeake Light Craft we have tried about a dozen types of
boat design software. We are now using the Nautilus System from New Wave
Systems and find it very intuative and fast. On the other hand, when I want
to do a quick hard chine hull "concept study" I'll often start in PlyBoats.
It's a great and inexpensive program as long as you understand the
limitations. Boat DZN is technically better for hard chine hulls, but slower
to use and not really intuative.

Hope that helps.

Check out http://www.formsys.com

They have an application called Maxsurf, and write 'The marine industry's
innovation leader in Integrated Design, Analysis & Construction software
for all types of vessels.'

They also have an interesting freeform design package. I _believe_ these
are Mac - PC cross platform.

Maxsurf is now available for Windows 95 and Windows NT. It is a full 3D
NURBS surface based design program with integral hydrostatics, curvature
analysis, surface intersecting and trimming, developable surfaces and
color rendering.

It is one of the most widely used yacht design programs around, being
used by German Frers, Nelson/Marek, Rob Humphreys, Ron Holland, Ian
Farrier, Ed Dubois, Nigel Irens and many others. It is excellent for
small boat design and construction as well as ship design up to the size
of oil tankers.

Maxsurf is suitable for round bilge, hard chine, multiple chine,
multihull, or even SWATH hull shapes. It can handle multiple appendages
such as fin keels, rudders, bulbs with no problems. It was used to
design the hulls of both Team New Zealand and Young America in the 1995
Americas Cup. It is widely regarded as being the most powerful and
easiest to use hull design system on the market.

A demo version for 95/NT can be downloaded from our web site
http://www.formsys.com

the download is about 4 Mb so make sure you can run the program before
downloading.

Minimum requirements are -
Windows 95 (3.1 is not acceptable) or Windows NT 3.51 or later
486 - Pentium preferred
16Mb of RAM - 32Mb Preferred
VGA - SVGA preferred

A low cost version (less than $200) is in the works and will be
available soon.

Excellent! -- I shall visit.
Running DOS/Windows applications on Linux seems so silly, doesn't it?
