is there a way to change an attached xref to an overlay without detaching it
and overlaying it? (and v.v.)

Type XREF and the dialog box will pop up. Simply double click on the
word ATTACH next to the file you want as an overlay. It will then
change to an overlay. It works both directions and all but nested
xrefs.
