How to know if a layer is empty

Try purging layers responding with the default NO response (unless you
actually want to get rid of them). This will let you know quickly if
there is anything on them. You will want to purge unreferenced blocks
first as they contain layers which will not be detected by the purge
command as long as their parent blocks are still in the drawing.

Another way of getting a clean look at your drawing is to thaw and
unlock all layers then export it as a world block to another drawing
file (doing the usual oops command to get your original drawing back).
Only the layers that have valid entities will be transported to the new
file. You will then be able to see a clean version of your drawing file
without disturbing your old one.
