How can I convert drawings on paper into a file which AutoCad can use?
Thank You

Tim:
You can scan and import the drawings as raster images into AutoCAD. Useful
insome cases, but this is probably not what you mean.
You want to be able to edit them as AutoCAD drawings right? In this case
you'll need to convert the raster image to a CAD vector format. There are
many fine products for this purpose, with a range of facilities from basic
to very sophisticated with prices to match.
I'd recommend Hitachi Software's Smart Pixel as a first port of call
http://www.hitachisoft-co.com , but there is a good range to examine. As a
starting point for your research process, check the list at
http://www.cadinfo.net/scripts/scatalog.cfm?cat=raster+to+vector
One tip. Raster to vector conversion does not usually meet people's first
expectations. When you get your head around the technology, what it can do
and what it can't do and apply that to your situation, the jigsaw will
gradually reveal the full picture.

Since I ask old questions too--I'll respond to yours.
Scanning is a start. A scanned image is a raster image--lots of dots. If you just want the image--you can paste it into a drawing using the IMAGE commands. Some of the recent plotters will plot raster images.
If you want to make it into an AutoCAD vector file, there are some softwares out there that sort of do the job, but leave a pretty bad mess if you want it perfect. Or you can proceed to redraw the drawing over the vector image. Or you can pay a service company to convert the drawing for you.
Hope this helps.
