DXF file specification

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find a copy of the
specification for DXF files?

I'm using the student edition, which although it has on-line manuals,
doesn't have all of them.

I'm trying to import a file exported from FastCad which fails after a
couple of thousand objects. I'd be happy to edit the file if only I knew
what the right format was.

Check the error mesage acad is showing at the status line including
the concerning line number of bad DXF file.
