I do freelance 3D work, sometimes for architects. The architects always
ask "do you do CAD too?", and I have to say "nope.". But so many have
asked that I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't add CAD to my quiver of
skills. My questions to you all are these: will a rudimentary
proficiency in the use of CAD, but without any formal skills in design,
enable me to offer any useful service to an architect? How much would
my 3D architectural experience, (making realistic renderings of
buildings based on plans), be applicable to working in CAD? And last
but certainly not lease, how much could I expect to earn per hour doing
simple CAD work on a freelance basis?

TIA

Seems like if you can make models from drawings, you have
half the battle won. You know what is expected from the
drawing. If you can prepare the drawings to suit the needs
of the Architects, you will be able to say honestly, "Yes,
I do the CAD, too". Being able to claim design talents/skills
is another matter, entirely.

As most posters here will tell you, CAD is only the tool. Design
is the profession. However, if the Architects are only looking for
the CAD, you may have an open door. With enough years of experience
in the CAD, you may develop the design skills.

Just my two bits

I am a graduate architect and have used AutoCrap since 'day one' as an
employee and as
a CAD Consultant providing contract drafting. Here's my advice...stick to
your knitting.
