Can somebody tell me why a file (extension .DWK) is always generated when
one drawing file has opened?
What is it for actually?

Thanks!

AutoCAD creates a number of files with the last character changed to a k
when you have AutoCAD configured with file locking enabled. This is to
tell other sessions of AutoCAD that the file is in use and it should not
attempt to open it.

You can go into the configuration and turn file locking off if you work
on a stand alone system. Another thing to note is that if there is a
crash, AutoCAD will not have the oportunity to remove this k file. You
would then have to manually fix it.

This is know as a drawing lock.

When Acad is told to open a drawing, it looks first to see if there is
a lock on that drawing, if so, it will not open the drawing. The lock
is placed whenever you has the drawing open, to keep others who may
have network access to your drives from opening the same drawing at
the same time. If you ever crash a drawing, heaven forbid, you must
often look for the .dwk file and delete it before you can open that
drawing again...for Acad did not delete it, because you did not
succesfully close the drawing.

.DWK files are used to lock your drawing file. As long as you're in the
drawing, AutoCAD won't let anyone open the file without first manually
unlocking it. If you are a single user on a single machine, use the
'Configure operating parameters' option and disable file locking.

This is occurs when you have file locking enabled. The file should
disappear when the session of acad has finished

But..!!! If the acad session does not end normally, ie: your computer
locks up or a power outage occurs the DWK file will still be there.
After you reboot, if you try to reopen the Drawing, you will see a
File locked by .... on (date) (time) message. You will have to manually
delete the leftover DWK file in order to reopen the corresponding DWG
file. Have fun..
