I am starting a part time drafting service, but the one thing that I am not
sure about is how much to charge. Does anyone have any idea what I might
charge for a residential floor plan, elevations, wall sections, and a few
various details. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in Advance,
mikey

Depends. Are you knowledgeable enough to do a set of plans from scratch
that will contain all of the pertinent Code compliance information,
structural details, etc., that are required for the local Building Dept.
to issue a permit? Or will the client be required to hire an engineer or
consultant to do those things? Will you be doing original design, or just
committing others' sketches to more formal drawings?

Good designers, who can turn out Code-compliant residential house plans
can get up to $40-50 per hour (depending on location and local economy);
drafters with limited Code/structural ability should expect something
more like $10-20. Based on experience, many charge clients by the square
foot (gross living space area), and prices range from $0.25-0.50 for
drafting, up to maybe $2.00-2.50 for complete designs. (All figures $US,
for work in the US).

Around here house plans are usually calculated by the square foot.
A typical house plan in Cape Coral, Florida is :
Living : 2000
Garage : 500
Patio : 400
Entry : 100
------------------
Total Area 3000 square feet.

$.50 per square foot = $1,500.00

That includes :
(7) 36x24 plots
(4) sets of architect sealed blueprints

I routinely do jobs like this in less than 24 hours, burning the candle at
both ends.
I'm busy all the time, some years I have done over 100 jobs.
The larger design firms in my area are commanding upwards of 2 dollars per
square foot.

Been self employed for over 12 years.

Good luck.
