With ToolPac's grouping tools you can link several layers together to
form a group. Once linked together, you can manipulate them as groups,
controlling visibility, locking, etc. For instance you wish to keep
chairs in layer CHAIR, desks in layer DESK, bookcases in layer BKCASE,
etc. Yet you want to manipulate them as group known as FURNITURE.

You can do almost anything with a group that you could with single
layers. An easy to use group editing dialog
[http://www.dotsoft.com/tplaygrp.gif] is included and you can print a
report of group information.

Follow the URL below to find out more.

You can do the same thing within AutoCAD itself. Look through the help files
about groups and grouping.

Other than THAT Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

The original poster wanted to reference several layers together to form a named
group. You speak of combining several objects together (from one or more layers)
to form a named group. While you could create groups to combine layers, they
would quickly become outdated as you add objects to layers. The time spent
maintaining such group/layer scenarios would certainly outway any benefits from
them. Not only that the fact that groups must maintain pointers to individual
objects would add a significant amount of overhead in terms of drawing storage.

Apples and Oranges.
