Hello all,

I apologize in advance if this is the wrong group to ask, but I couldn't
find one I thought was better suited.

Our new house is being built and will be ready soon. I'm now starting the
process of what we want the front and back yards to end up looking like
(shape and style of patio, area for grass, plants, outdoor BBQ, etc...).

Can anyone recommend a good program that will allow me to create an online
version of my home (and the shape/dimensions of the yards), then allow me to
design how I want the yards to look.

I know of plenty of good programs for home design, but was wondering about a
good program for creating front and back yard landscaping designs. There are
many so I was hoping to get some advice from people here, the experts :) on
which ones I should look at. I'm fairly knowledgeable with computer programs
and can pick news ones up quickly (as long as they're not too
complicated...lol).

Which one(s) would you recommend?

Thanks in advance...

Which program did you end up going with for the house? You were looking for
a program to try color schemes out, what'd you end up using? Did you find
it helpful?

Neither.
Landscape designers provide their *professional* service for free, so why
not use it?
I have one working for me right now.
I know little about plants in general and would be wasting much time
learning if I attempted to design our landscaping.
Not only that, I would be cheating myself of the benefits of the experienced
professionals.
Designing ones landscape, like designing many other things, is an attempt at
folly.

Hey Michael,

I went with 3D Home Architecture 4.0. I'm just now starting to learn how to
use the program. As for color schemes and fine details...I've been told I'll
need to use a photo editing program (like Photoshop).

So if I understand things correctly, I'll use 3D Home Architecture for the
basic layout and then use Photoshop to fine tune the specific details.

Dang you guys seriously are in need of business or something. I
understand the need for a designer in all aspects of architecture, but some
people just want to do it themselves sometimes. As long as they like it,
and understand that many problems and mistakes can come out of it, I say go
for it. The only way you'll learn is by making mistakes, and you'll be more
knowledgeable about your yard, which you'll be taking care of. As far as
programs go, I really don't know of any good ones, to start I think you
should try and "sketch" what you imagine it will look like, either drawing
form, or in words if you have no drawing abilities. You could also get a
friend to draw what you describe. Then wait here for someone to describe a
program that works well for you...sorry I couldn't be much help.

Hmmm...
He comes into alt.architecture and asks for recomendations for the best
tools to do our jobs.
Do you really deny seeing anything wrong with this picture?
I gave him my best advice, advice that I am presently taking BTW, so what
are you bitching about?

Don,

I didn't come in here to find out how you do your job so I could do it and
avoid hiring a professional. First of all, I assume people in here are
architects and wouldn't be the one to take on a backyard landscaping
project. Second of all, I just wanted to use a program to come up with what
I like and then hire a landscaper to do the work.

I appreciate your advice, letting me know that a landscaper will do the
design part for free, but I'm the type that wants to do several different
designs to see what I like the best. That's why I'm looking for a program
that will allow me to come up with some designs for the yards.

Very well.
Maybe I am being coerced by the fact that I live in a tropical wonderland
and the plant species are vast, it may not be so where you live.
I attempted to design my own landscaping with the best state of the art
software but found out quickly that there is a steep learning curve to
landscape design. I was not willing to spend a year or more learning which
plants are which and why some are better than others. Being a very visual
person I only know what looks good to me and I have a budget to live under.
I believe 3DHA has an add-on or a plug-in which facilitates landscaping but
I may be wrong. Before I'd go any further, if you're serious about your
landscape, I'd at least call a few landscape places and see what they can do
for you. Believe it or not most professionals are what they are because they
earned it, and not all of them want to get rich on one job. Good luck.

Hey Don,

Maybe I wasn't clear about my intentions.

I don't know enough to do all the "specific" designs (and don't have the
considerable time to learn). What I do want to do is come up with some very
general ideas and see which ones I like.

All we will have will have when the builder is finished will be a plan dirt
area. These are some of the things I'd like to play around with to see what
I like:

1.) Location , size, and shape of cement patio
2.) Type of cement (color finish, design, trim or no trim, etc...)
3.) Location and style of outdoor BBQ area
4.) Location of Jacuzzi (won't be put in immediately, but will within a year
or so)
5.) Specific grass area
6.) Where the plants will be (not exactly what plants)

I'll be getting a professional landscaper involved to fine tune my ideas and
actually do the work. What I want to get out of doing some early designing
myself is a general idea of what I want the landscaper to work off of.

Total 3D Landscape Deluxe 3.0 by Broderbund is not a bad program for its
simplicity, it may work with your existing program or at least by it self.
