I would like to run Autocad R12 DOS version , under windows 3.11
A) Is it possible? If so, what basicly should I do ?
B) If not under Windows 3.11, would it run under WIN95? and if so, what
should I do there?
Thanks,

Avoid the green ones. They're not ripe yet.
Uri,
You can find the necessary information for running AutoCAD DOS under
Windows 3.1 (3.11) in the "AutoCAD Interface, Installation, and
Performance Guide" beginning on page 87. Note on page 90 that the max
res. available this way is Super VGA 800x600. This works, I use it for
simple screen capture of AutoCAD DOS screens into windows apps.

Hi henry.
Thank you for your answer, but is that book supposed to be a part of the Autocad
R12 release ? I couldn't find it amongst the others...
If not, how can I lay my hand on it ?
You will need to add a line in your system.ini file in order for
AutoCAD to run. The line is as follows:
device=c:\acad\pharlap.386
It goes in the section titled [386Enh]
Windows95 is not a supported OS for ACAD, although some people have
gotten it to run. It would definitely help to have a third-party
plotting program. You will need to run ACAD for DOS in the DOS Mode
for Windows 95. Warning. Windows 3.1 will not run ACAD for DOS nearly
as fast as DOS will. In fact, you could crash frequently. I stronly
advise Windows 95 and ACADr13c4.

Here's how I run R12 for DOS under WFWG 3.11:
1. Set up a PIF file that has as the Program Filename the DOS batch
file you'd normally use to start AutoCAD (incuding the full path).
Video Memory: High Graphics
Optional paramters: (leave blank, but you could add the name of a
start up script or the -R switch to start it up in configuration mode if
for some reason the video gets screwed up and you can't see a screen).
Startup Directory: your choice, although mine is blank here for I
use the batch file to set up the directory.
Memory requirements: 256 & 640
EMS memory: 0 & 0
XMS memory: 0 & -1 (give it all ya got)
Display usage: Full Screen
Under Advanced, I put X's in:
Detect Idle time
Uses High Memory Area
High Graphics
Emulate Text Mode
Retain Video Memory
Allow fast paste
I don't know the why's of all of these; but, this does work.
2. You can use the batch file that is created when you install
AutoCAD or you can use a custom batch file. I have several, each for a
different purpose while developing AutoCAD applications.
3. In Windows Program Manager, select FILE NEW GROUP and give it a
name of your choice, then with that group the active, select FILE NEW
PROGRAM and refer to the ACAD PIF file you created. Choose an icon from
the default list of PROGMAN.EXE or MORICONS.DLL or whatever you like.
The above works for Releases 10, 11, and 12. Probably would on 13,
too, except I don't have the RAM to try it. At least a test failed
while writing this reply on my 386-25 w/8mb RAM, WFWG w/WIN32S active.
Hope this helps.

* UniQWK v3.0 * The Windows Mail Reader
We have run AutoCAD r12 for DOS under win3.1. The installation
instructions are in the "Installation Guide DOS 386" that came with
AutoCAD. Look on page 88. We learned that you must follow the
instructions very closely. We also had problems with the display driver,
as I recall we were limited in what we could use.
We have now upgraded to r13, so I can't remember everything, but I do
remeber that it never really worked very well (ie, you couldn't switch to
other applications with crashing, etc.) Like I said, we did run it under
windows, but only for a short time, and even then it was experimental.
Good Luck
I have had very good luck with running under win NT using R13c4
important to get the c4 patch for Autocad. NT is by far the most stable
windows OS Soon NT will have a WIN 95 facelift and will look & feel like
win 95 but with less crashing.....
A number of steps must be taken in order to allow AutoCAD/386 R12 to be
run inside of the Windows environment. These include:
Copy the file PHARLAP.386 from the AutoCAD R12 directory to the
Windows SYSTEM directory, for example:
COPY C:\ACAD\PHARLAP.386 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
Edit the Windows SYSTEM.INI file to include this device driver:
EDIT C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI
[386Enh]
device=pharlap.386
Create a Program Information File (PIF) for AutoCAD/386 R12 with the
PIF EDITOR (found in the MAIN Program Group) as follows:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ACAD.PIF
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Program Filename: ACAD.EXE
Window Title: AutoCAD/386 R12
Optional Parameters:
Start-up Directory: C:\ACAD
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Memory Requirements: KB Required: 128 KB Desired: 640
EMS Memory: KB Required: 0 KB Limit: 1024
XMS Memory: KB Required: 0 KB Limit: 1024
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Display Usage: (X) Full Screen Execution: ( ) Background
( ) Windowed (X) Exclusive
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(X) Close Window on Exit
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ADVANCED OPTIONS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Multitasking Options:
Background Priority: 50 Foreground Priority: 100
(X) Detect Idle Time
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Memory Options:
( ) EMS Memory Locked ( ) XMS Memory Locked
(X) Uses High Memory Area ( ) Lock Application Memory
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Display Options:
Monitor Ports: ( ) Text ( ) Low Graphics ( ) High Graphics
(X) Emulate Text Mode ( ) Retain VideoMemory
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other Options:
(X) Allow Fast paste ( ) Allow Close When Active
Reserve Shortcut Keys: ( ) Alt+Tab ( ) Alt+Esc ( ) Ctrl+Esc
( ) PrtSc ( ) Alt+PrtSc ( ) Alt+Space
( ) Alt+Enter

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
having lots of ram helps...if the video gets wierd after alt-tab, try
punching the F1 key a couple of times..it usually works...
