I have a tenant who vacated and left behind two digital cable descrambler
boxes. These boxes were from his previous residence and not the one that I
am responsible for. He skipped town and left no forwarding address.

These boxes are General Instrument, practically brand new, with remotes. I
was going to sell 'em on Ebay but I looked up Ebay's rules and they
"prohibit" the sale of cable descramblers.

What can/should I do with these (in other words, what do I legally have to
do, and what could I possibly do with them)? Thanks.

They belongto the cable company. Call them upand ask them to verify
the serial numbers and set up a service call to have one of their
techs to come pick em up.

make them disappear. Whatever you do don't call the catv company, they'll
probably accuse you of stealing them.

Just because theft may be an integral part of your own mind-set
doesn't mean that's how every one thinks or does things.

Since the converter boxes are not in J's name, there's no reason for
the cable company to think s/he stole them. Indeed, they'll be glad to
get them back.

J, understandibly, would probably like to sell them if possible, in
order to realize at least some of the financial loss that may have
resulted due to a tenant who skipped, presumably owing back rent.
Those converter boxes aren't free and in fact are quite expensive. Nor
will they be very useful to anyone which may present J with a whole
new set of problems once his buyer finds that out.

If J returns them to the cable company, they won't have to be replaced
but can be used for other subscribers. The financial cost for such
replacements are ultimately borne by the subscribers of the cable
company. So the right thing to do would be to send them back to the
cable company. Again, and understandibly, J may see it differently.

A few more facts about the boxes that I posted about, in case anyone cares
:-)

- The only identifying stickers on any parts is on the universal remotes.
It's the name of a local cable company. Nothing on the actual box. So, how
am I to know which cable company the boxes belong to?

- I've seen them on web sites for $300 new. I didn't know that they were
actually sold by companies other than the cable company..

- The tenant does not owe back rent; however, they did leave damages to my
property. So, any items that were left behind will be sold to cover these
costs.

Thanks for the replies.

Another note on these boxes... Technically, is it a "descrambler" or a
"converter" ... ? Ebay only prohibits descramblers, not converters.

They are General Instrument Model# DCT2244/1161/ABCDEFG

Thanks again

It is a digital converter, and not a descrambler.

The remote controls go WITH the converters, therefore the name you see
on the remote identifies the cable company that owns the converters.

They really aren't sold in any mass-marketed, public way. Sometimes a
former cable TV subscriber will sell the converter(s) provided to them
by their local cable operator rather than returning them to the cable
company.

FWIW, though these converters may have once been in the possession of
your tenant, they are actually owned by the cable company, a fact you
may want to consider before you do sell them. I don't know what future
recourse the cable company may have should it some day find you sold
what is rightfully their's. But I wouldn't just assume you'd be done
with it once they are sold and you received money for them. Somewhere
down the road this may all come back to haunt you. Again, it's highly
understandible that you would want to recoup your own costs by selling
your former tenant's property. But these boxes are not his property.

Do you think your tenant went out of his way to get remotes frm a
totally different cable company for the boxes?

>- I've seen them on web sites for $300 new. I didn't know that they were

It is legal to buy cable boxes and legal to use them to receive
services that are ordered from the cable company.

Im pretty sure selling someone elses property is illegal.

The boxes will have serial numbers on them. They have to in order to
be identified and used by a cable company. Call up the company named
on the remote. Give them the adderss of the house. Odds are the
tenants name will pop up in the system, read off the serial numbers of
the boxes, and if they match, then ask if the boxes belong to the
company. If so, ask them to come get em.

Its not like that takes a whole lot of thought and all...

Actually the "B" in the model number signifies descrabling.
