Although i didn't have either one myself, i remember a few of my
neighbors had these services. They had problems with their roof-top
antennas and the service itself, and i think it was before the dawn of
cable itself wasn't it? I lived in Inglewood back then.
The other day i was wondering when On-TV and Select TV went away,
and when cable came on the scene and i seem to remember it was
about 1980 that i got it soon after it became available. I remember
making the checks out to American Cablesystems but i can't
remember if they were the original company, or if they took
over the original company. I remember being bummed out
when the Z-Channel went away :-)

They were more than in the LA areoa, I heard Chicago had it as well.
I remember. My parents had ON-TV. Still have a tape if you can believe it.
I almost get teary eyed when I see the old "KBSC-TV Corona/Los Angeles" ID
on the movie, hehe. What's pathetic is the OTA signal was vastly superior
to anything on analog cable. 1980 had better picture quality (provided you
had a good rooftop antenna) than 1990's cable, pathetic, lol.
My aunt had SELECTV. I remember wanting that because it seemed cooler and
had more stuff. Both stations are Spanish 24/7 now. KBSC is now KVEA, the
Telemundo affiliate. KWHY, formerly the Business Channel during the day is
now a Telemundo, but independent duopoly.

I used to sell all the parts to build ON - TV boxes. If someone wanted me
to I would also build them one. Usually in a Cigar box with the trimmer
mounted in the front foe easy adjustment. It was a fun time.
I remember On-TV in Ft Worth in 1985. They beamed the service around
at 2.3Ghz. I lived well out of town, and was outside their service area.
My neighbor tried to buy the service and they told him too far out.
I picked up a 'stop sign', which was a small board that you soldered to
the bottom of a coffee can, and make a small hardline feed into an
antenna inside the can. Didn't work hardly at all. Thought it was my
kit building skills, but I was just so far on the fringe. I ended up making
a disc array as a director for the can, and managed to bring it in quite
well. Not perfect, but not bad. At that point it was at the point that
the weather made a BIG difference.
Every night at 10pm, the service would go 'adult'. First a 'network' movie
from On-TV. Then after the network movie, the 'local' franchise would
follow with a second movie. Stuff like 'The Story of O', 'Deep Throat',
'The Naughty Vitorians'. The local movies were all uncut, uncensored...
