Screw 'em! If asked, just say it was that way when you moved in.
BTW - stand by for two cable company pansies (Gary Tait and Travis Campbell)
to hand you their "mightier than thou" guilt trip bullshit.
They verbally suck the cable company's dick every chance they get!
With that said, audits are regularly performed by most companies. When an
audit is completed, a detailed account of who is connected and who has what
service is put in the computer system. The next time an audit takes place
any changes are noted. If a customer is connected illegally they may be sent
a letter stating the discrepancy, and it will serve as a warning. Usually
before you get a second letter for a second infraction, your cable is shut
off completely,

Not really that many people steal cable.

so give it a shot, try to split before your cable modem, or just plug from
cable modem in to tv to test it first

That is not true. Those of us who pay for cable pay for the losses and
therefore, the cable companies still make a big fat profit.

Years ago, I took a tour of a telco, and saw the impedance bridge
that is used to read the line, and the impedance noted. Later readings,
I suppose, would reveal any changes on the line, added phones, etc.
Cable companies may have a way to sweep the line at the full range
to detect any changes. I don't know this for a fact, just that it is
possible. Also, tv sets radiate and the channel that they are tuned to,
can be detected, outside of the house. I used to do this in my
early ham days, to detect what channel my next door neighbor was
watching. This was simply done, by listening to 4.5 megahertz to listen
to the re-radiated sound signal, from the receiver's sound IF.
In fact, tv sets, before required power line filters, radiated excessive
video and horizontal sync pulses that made short wave and distant
AM broadcast reception impossible! Now the power companies
want to use the shortwave bands to radiate broadband cable signals,
and totally jam anyone trying to listen to short wave, including hams!

REALLY?
Gary Tait, you never cease to distort the truth or lie when it come to your
beloved cable company!
P.S.
Fuck off, ya cable company fag!
There's actually more than one issue.
With basic cable, the cable company usually sends ONLY the lower
analog signals to a tap. With extended basic they send ALL the analog,
and may or may not send digital. In a lot of systems basic and extended
basic are fully compatible with 'cable ready' TVs.
If you get a cable modem, it's a safe bet you're required to get at least
basic cable. They then trap the extended. In this area, they REQUIRE
that you get extended basic to get a cable modem. Then the digital
stuff is free. (Just the box rental.)
If you get ONLY a cable modem, then the rest is probably filtered.
But maybe not. They may have put just a high end filter for extended
basic on there. I'm not telling you to try it, of course!
So, you want to take the filter out? Well, that's your decision, but
they can tell. IF they take the time to do so. If the filter is 'inside'
your residence... If outside, then if you tamper with it, it could
easily be detected in an audit. Years ago, people used to 'burn
out' the filters with electricity, but they are now built so that if
anything happens, the filter dies and you get nothing.
I HAVE heard of people getting 'lookalike' filters that are actually
just passthroughs... Naw, you wouldn't do that, would you?
Thing is, any tampering you do could easily be caught at an audit.
Even the lookalikes can be caught if a sweep just 'swaps out' filters
in a neighborhood, and documents and tracks filters they swap out...
While their at it they might as well drop MTV and CNN.

Leave it alone then. You won't go to jail, just be civilly liable,
if not a criminal fine.
