I live in an apartment complex. I was getting High speed internet
hooked up...but not cable TV. I noticed that the guy put a silver
"gizmo" on the cable...it looks about the size of a pack of
lifesavers. He said that it was to block out the cable signal. My
Question!!!! If I could get inside that box and remove the filter,
would I have access to cable tv on my cable ready television. I don't
have a converter box. ALSO....Can they tell at the main building that
the filter was removed???? What are my chances of getting caught? I
appreciate any comments, thoughts, suggestions!!! Thanks!

Screw 'em! If asked, just say it was that way when you moved in.
BTW - stand by for two cable company pansies (Gary Tait and Travis Campbell)
to hand you their "mightier than thou" guilt trip bullshit.
They verbally suck the cable company's dick every chance they get!

To answer your question, if you were to remove the trap you would recieve
basic cable, and the company would not know the trap was removed at the time
you remove it. Most traps have a special key that allows them to be removed
from the port it is plugged into, if you do not have this key you may damage
the port, and that will be extremely noticeable.

With that said, audits are regularly performed by most companies. When an
audit is completed, a detailed account of who is connected and who has what
service is put in the computer system. The next time an audit takes place
any changes are noted. If a customer is connected illegally they may be sent
a letter stating the discrepancy, and it will serve as a warning. Usually
before you get a second letter for a second infraction, your cable is shut
off completely,

If you hook up a cable line to the TV or TV tuner card, you may find
that not all channels are blocked. I receive Channels 74 - 78, I think. I
believe I get History Channel, which is okay. I also get Game and Golf
Channel, which I can live with out. but if there was one or two more
channels, I would get Sci-Fi and that would be nice.
Like previously mentioned, if you remove it and it damages it, it could
cost you a bundle. Audits are done pretty regularly also.

When we had cable internet installed years back, all they did was simply
split a regular TV coax. connection. I would expect if you unscrew the coax
from the modem, and split it off, you would get your cable. This is assuming
your cable internet is on a different cable, and the filter was placed on a
seperate coax cable INTENDED for cable tv... and not having the filter on
your cable internet wire.

so give it a shot, try to split before your cable modem, or just plug from
cable modem in to tv to test it first

That is not true. Those of us who pay for cable pay for the losses and
therefore, the cable companies still make a big fat profit.

I tried that....unfortunately...no luck! I think that the same line
carries both the Internet and the cable tv. I really don't want to
screw around with it too much. I don't want to go to jail! I had
always heard that the cable company can tell if you have cable hooked
up illegally by detecting the signal, without looking in the main
junction box outside. I didn't know if that was really
true...especially if the cable did not go through a converter box, but
was instead connected directly to the tv. I assumed that I would only
get basic cable and not the digital stuff. I am only going to be in
this apartment for another 6 months. Don't really know if it's worth
it to take a chance on getting caught! Thanks for your help!

Years ago, I took a tour of a telco, and saw the impedance bridge
that is used to read the line, and the impedance noted. Later readings,
I suppose, would reveal any changes on the line, added phones, etc.

Cable companies may have a way to sweep the line at the full range
to detect any changes. I don't know this for a fact, just that it is
possible. Also, tv sets radiate and the channel that they are tuned to,
can be detected, outside of the house. I used to do this in my
early ham days, to detect what channel my next door neighbor was
watching. This was simply done, by listening to 4.5 megahertz to listen
to the re-radiated sound signal, from the receiver's sound IF.

In fact, tv sets, before required power line filters, radiated excessive
video and horizontal sync pulses that made short wave and distant
AM broadcast reception impossible! Now the power companies
want to use the shortwave bands to radiate broadband cable signals,
and totally jam anyone trying to listen to short wave, including hams!

Cable companies probably cry about losing money so they can jack up the
prices even farther.
IF a cable company was loosing money, don't you think they would go out of
business instead of expanding and doing more hiring?

Now that I realize I am trying to debate with two people with the collective
intelligence of a four year old I will opt out. Maybe if you understood what
goes into your cable rate, and why price increases come about, you would be
less likely to spout of nonsensibly. Did you know ESP just raised its per
sub cost to cable companies from $.0.75 to well over $2? Bet you didn't know
that did you? What is the cable company supposed to do with the $1.25 per
sub they just lost? And thats just ONE Channel, what happens when eight
channels decide to do this and you have a 70 channel line up. Every month at
least one channel raises its per subscriber cost to the cable, and all the
cable company can do is raise rates, or eat it.

If you care about your subscribers you collectively boot ESPN until ESPN

If ESPN cannot sell air time, they'll bite the dust or wake the fuck up.

My provider can both drop the sports channels out of my
lineup and I would not care. But sometimes wonder why
I don't drop all tv service, since it seldom has much I like.

There's actually more than one issue.

With basic cable, the cable company usually sends ONLY the lower
analog signals to a tap. With extended basic they send ALL the analog,
and may or may not send digital. In a lot of systems basic and extended
basic are fully compatible with 'cable ready' TVs.

If you get a cable modem, it's a safe bet you're required to get at least
basic cable. They then trap the extended. In this area, they REQUIRE
that you get extended basic to get a cable modem. Then the digital
stuff is free. (Just the box rental.)

If you get ONLY a cable modem, then the rest is probably filtered.
But maybe not. They may have put just a high end filter for extended
basic on there. I'm not telling you to try it, of course!

So, you want to take the filter out? Well, that's your decision, but
they can tell. IF they take the time to do so. If the filter is 'inside'
your residence... If outside, then if you tamper with it, it could
easily be detected in an audit. Years ago, people used to 'burn
out' the filters with electricity, but they are now built so that if
anything happens, the filter dies and you get nothing.

I HAVE heard of people getting 'lookalike' filters that are actually
just passthroughs... Naw, you wouldn't do that, would you?

Thing is, any tampering you do could easily be caught at an audit.
Even the lookalikes can be caught if a sweep just 'swaps out' filters
in a neighborhood, and documents and tracks filters they swap out...

My cable system dropped the piece of garbage channel TNN a little over a
year ago, and every day there are complaints about it. Now see them dropping
ESPN, the number sports network in terms of ratings, and see how well
received that will be.

While their at it they might as well drop MTV and CNN.

MTV, FOX, CNN, TLC, BET, ect seldom has content that's not targeted to a
precise demographic, especially LIFETIME, WE, GOLF and OXYGEN.
My cable provider (Charter) carries 25 channels that are either religeous in
content or they're selling eBay type shit.
The ONLY reason I have the cable is for the Silver Package ($88) which
includes 78 channels and high speed Internet access.

NOT TRUE.
These Cable Company dorks are brainwashed to believe that their income
derives from an individual's monthly cable bill.
In fact their income comes from piecemeal work they do for barely above
minimum wages thay are paid by fat Republicans who send their retarded
children to Harvard because of dummasses like Taint.
