Digital setup boxes! Is that what they are called?
My cable company has just started to offer digital cable in my area. N. E.
Pennsylvania. Only problem is i dont want to "rent" a cable box or what ever it
is called from them. I have a digial audio reciever. Can i run the cable wire
directly to that and receive digital broadcast that way? I suppose to receive
the Digital Video for my TV I will have to rent theirs or if someone would
point me in the right direction and help me find what i would need. Help me
please!!!!!!! These mothers are charging $40.00 buck a month for basic service
now. I hate to pay them anymore for the other things I would need.
Thanks for any help guys.

I think you are out of luck. I bought two boxes on ebay and well they are of
no use. I do occasionally plug the newest one into the line to see if
they've updated it for the new guide yet but it has been turned off by the
cable company so it doesn't actually receive any of my channels and just
displays an black screen. So I think your best bet is to go to DSS(DirecTV
or Dish Network). You will get more bang for your buck plusYOU get to pick
what equipment you buy NOT your CABLE COMPANY!!!! Also no rental fees and
you can get an system from best buy for $49.99!!!!(Dish and Receiver but a
major credit card and activation is required!!!!)

And you get to take the hit when the equipment stops working and you take the
hit when dss changes it's channel positioning or technology requiring you to buy
new equipment to get what you want, and you take the hit to service more than 2
tv's.

You should also compare lineups as my company just launched about 40 new
channels on digital which makes it very comparable to dss channel wise and cost
wise.

not here. It would cost me $52 to get digital cable(Pittsburgh Area) While
with DirecTV if I subscribe by July 17th I get all channels except pay per
views for $32 for two months(promotion) after that I still get over 100
channels while with digital cable I can only get something like 65
channels(not inculding the 32 music channels) and it still would cost me $52
without equipment rental($3.30 extra) So If it came down to it I would
probably have to go with DirecTV or Dish Network for more channels and
better quality(even though the quality on directv is going worse from what
i hear because of locals they are adding). Now if they would activate my
box(and eliminate the $3.30 extra){which they won't do and I know it} then I
might try digital cable.

oh one question. My one box still gets all of the tvguide information so
would It also get the new guide when it is sent to the denver area(where i
bought the box from) or would it more than likely reject the new guide when
it is sent to the boxes? If it rejects the guide I may have to sell if for
some cash and maybe put that towards subbing to either dss or digital cable.
Btw I know digital cable stinks because when my uncle had it and he changed
the digital channel it got all pixellated!!!!

Digital boxes are not tranferable from site to site or cable company to
cable company. They are not available on the retail market and are
purchased by the cable companies directly from General Instruments,
Scientific Atlanta, or Pioneer. (Open Cable will change this, but for now
it is not possible to buy digital cable boxes in the retail arena.)

If you bought digital cable boxes on Ebay, you bought equipment that belongs
to a cable company, not an individual. It will not work on any system, but
the one that purchased it. There are encryption keys in the box that only
the cable site that bought the box has on its digital controller. Without
those keys the box will not authorize on any site except the one that
received it from the manufacturer.

I suggest you contact E-Bay about getting a refund. Basically, someone sold
you stolen equipment since they didn't own it in the first place.

is there any way I can get the basic or expanded basic channels on the box

tvguide information or will it reject this information?

I hate these people who stick up for the cable companies and tell us all "what a
great service we are providing" and that "we are the pillar of society" and that
"stolen cable boxes are bad because they belong to us (cable comp.) and only us,
so give them back". Hey how about giving me my money back for the week I missed
cable because your guys messed up my hook up outside my house while
disconnecting someone else. Sure I pay for cable but if I had another choice
that was in the same price range as basic, trust me I would.

Plus, anyone know how to phreak a digital cable box? I'll bet someone out there
can point me to a web site where the "big secret codes" are being broken.

Every Cable company that I know of would glad give a customer credit for the
time their service was out in those circumstances.

I'm sure there are people trying to figure out how to steal digital cable,
but I haven't heard of it being done successfully. And even if they do, the
digital boxes were specifically designed to make it easy for the cable
companies to change encryption schemes, so it's likely that it will be very
expensive to try to steal the service on a long term basis.

Chill out, dude. I did not say any of what you are bitching about. I was
simply informing DSS Master that the boxes he bought on E-bay will not work
on a different cable system, and if he wasn't happy about that he could
complain to E-bay about buying stolen equipment on their service. They have
a fraud policy that should reimburse him for wasting money on a "hot" cable
converter that will not work.

If you want your money back for losing a week of service, you also have a
legitmate grip. Tell the cable company to refund to you that week of
service. If they don't, take them to small claims court. You will win
easily.

Trust me I called and they said that they had to send someone out to see what
was up and when they did they then said that they need to send it to higher
management and then finally I got a refund of $1.72 for a week. I spent total ~2
hours playing with this and I was so upset that I finally gave up. I guess thats
what they wanted.

Yesturday they moved Showtime to Digital. So now if you liked Showtime on anolog
you have to subscribe to Digital for the extra $30 a month. Soon there will only
be Spanish/Shopping/Public Access-Governmet/Local Channels left on Anaolog. What
up with that?

Sorry about my gripping, thanks for the help guys, have a great one.

Over the next 10 years or so, virtually all TV in the US will be converted
to digital. With the competition from satellite dishes, customers are always
pushing us to add more channels. One of the most cost-effective ways to do
this is to convert one analog channel to six or more digital channels. Since
this change is inevitable anyway many cable companies are starting to
convert their services now. In our system, we converted our analog Encore
service and one of our analog pay per view channels to 20 channels of
Starz!/Encore programming. You should check again with your cable company
for the cost of digital. The average in the industry for the additional cost
is around $10 a month, and I have never heard of anyone charging much more
than that. We charge $7.90 more per month than for the analog full basic,
with the premium services at the same cost as the analogs. For example, a
Showtime/TMC customer on analog gets Showtime/TMC for $11.95 per month, and
a Digital subscriber for the same cost gets 10 channels of Showtime/TMC
services. The additional $7.90 per month also gets the customer 40 channels
of DMX commercial-free music, 27 pay per view channels, and the interactive
guide system, in addition to all of the analog full basic services. Not a
bad deal considering we have to pay more than $300 for the digital box, not
to mention all the equipment needed to set up the service at our office and
headend.

digital here on or after june 30th as well. No announcement though. Just saw
where the commisioners were very upset about it in the wheeling paper on
monday. We're supposed to be getting an letter in the mail with the channel
changes and it will be on july's bill and it will also be in the weirton
paper as well(supposedly). Well if they plan on doing thisJune 30th they
better get moving or I may have to call the fcc and state and local
francising authorities for not giving us proper notice(at least a week isn't

How many days advance notice did you get?
I got written notification of showtime extreme and sundance going digital
only about 2 weeks before yet I was told thisd a month prior to when I
asked.
The thing that's stopping them from going all digital is the fact that many
folks may not want the digital and they have to install a gold filter (as
opposed to a blure filter) for figital to work

Maybe I jumped the gun. I hope I did my dad's mother pays $63/month for
cable as it is(hbo/showtime/expanded/basic). If they raise the rates she is
considering putting up an antenna and just getting television that way. My
uncle who lives with her doesn't want to go to digital and neither does my
dad. I have DirecTV equpment and an dish installed already so all it takes
is an cable rate hike and an call to directv and I'll switch over to
directv!!!

In theory, come july you can have these boxes turned on legally.

But in reality, since the chances are high you have bought stolen
equipment, you could be prosecuted for owning them.

Before you try and have them turned on, I would check with GI or your
cable company to see if you in fact have been duped into buying stolen
equipment.

It always amazes me that people would go out and buy questionable, if
not outright stolen property, and then when they get caught, they want
a _REWARD_ for returning it! Jeez!

Possibly... jail time. Although I don't think they would go that far.
However you never know who they'll want to make an example of.
I used to work for TCI (pre-AT&T), and I don't recall anyone getting
any "rewards" for "finding" a stolen box or boxes. In fact i never
heard of anyone ever returning a stolen box. I've only heard of people
stealing them.

My suggestion, use this as a lesson learned:Those that spend a little
trying to save money are destined to spend more in the end!

What are you going to do with your website? Buy DirecTV and sub to both and
compare the two services with digital cable? Or will this mark the end of
scotts views for good?
