Hello,
I am running win98 with an Ethernet adapter.
I have cox@home and notice that there is always a *.tmp file produced in my
windows\temp folder whenever I turn on my computer. This file, when opened
with notepad, always has "Root Entry" at the top and is then proceeded by a
list of web pages I have visited along with other unusual entries. These
files are produced cumulatively, and only the latest one is in use, which
means I am not able to delete it. After a few days, my temp folder is loaded
with these files; is there a way to stop this or at least limit it?
There is also a *.dat file located in my windows\cookies folder which when
opened with notepad lists all my cookies. It starts with "Client URL cache"
and is proceeded by this list. This file is also impossible to delete except
from dos mode. Are these files normal? and is there a way to stop them from
being written?
Thanks in advance!
Rippy

These files are normal, they are nothing to be worried about, leave them
alone...

Looks like some marketeer wants to see where you're going and what
you're doing on the net. What, EXACTLY, is the name of this
interesting file? Let the rest of us look for this filename and see
if all @Home customers have it and not the rest of us. If only @Home
customers have it, we can assume it's "THEM". If they're snooping
like this, it might be fun to talk to an attorney to see how much
money all the @Home customers can share with him.....

Delete this file. Then create it blank, again with Notepad. Open
Windows Explorer and change its attributes to READ ONLY, which will
prevent any program from modifying it.

Larry....isn't it fun knowing some paid hack is watching everything
you do by remote control? Wouldn't you love to kill him/her?

It sounds like the software is some sort of proxy, caching webpages for you.

You could add a "deltree c:\windows\temp" in your autoexec to wipe all of
them at
startup.

What I did was to uninstall all the @Home shit that they put in, partially
because I don't like netscape
then later because I installed a Linux firewall.

The easiest way I found to handle this crap it is to insert this line
your autoexec.bat

Del c:\windows\temp\*.*

It causes you to have to download a new cookie every time
you return to a WEB site so you take a little bit of hit in
performance in explorer. But, it deletes all the files in that
folder every time you boot.

You can get more creative and add this line

Del c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*

But, that zaps you internet cache. Not really a problem if
your running a cable modem or something faster.
