In 1868, J.R. Watkins hooked up his horse-drawn wagon and headed out on the
Minnesota prairie. The 28-year old entrepreneur went from farm to farm
selling his products. Soon the "Watkins Man" became a part of the American
landscape-direct selling and the "Watkins Way" were born.
J.R. Watkins started with a single product. Liniment, but soon realized
farmers were hungry for other items. He expanded his line to include
spices, extracts, home remedies and other household goods.
The recipe for success was simple - satisfy the customer. Watkins was the
first company to offer a money-back guarantee. Customers could use a
product down to the trial mark molded on the side of the bottle. If the
customer didn't like the product, the "Watkins Man' would buy it back on his
next visit.
The "Watkins Way" soon earned the trust and respect of customers and
Representatives. The sales force quickly grew as entrepreneurs saw the
rewards offered by a career with Watkins. Representatives not only enjoyed
the flexible hours and independence that came from owning their own
business, but they also got the satisfaction of selling the highest quality
products to customers who had learned to trust and value the Watkins line.
As the sales force grew, so did the company. In 1885, Watkins moved the
business from his farm in Plainview down the road to Winona, MN, to improve
access to the nation's budding railroad system.
The block-long administration building, completed in 1911 and still used
today, is exquisite in its design. Rich Italian marble and mosaics adorn
the lobby which is framed in uniquely designed mahogany woodwork. Tiffany
stained glass skylights accent a half-moon window which depicts Winona's
version of Sugar Load Mountain.
Right behind the lobby is the loading dock where the world's finest vanilla,
cinnamon, and other spices are hand-inspected before being processed,
packaged and tested to ensure quality.
In the last few years, Watkins has experienced tremendous growth - with more
than 50,000 Watkins Independent Marketing Representatives now selling
products throughout the United States and Canada. While today's traditional
"Watkins Man" is just as likely to be a "Watkins Woman" or "Watkins Couple,"
these individuals still feel the excitement that comes with meeting a
customer's needs with the highest quality products.
With just $29.95 for a "Welcome to Watkins" kit, containing support
materials and example products, individuals can own their own Watkins
business and the benefits that come with it: flexible hours, income based on
effort, recognition and advancement at one's own pace.
Watkins Representatives sell the company's complete line of more than 350
products, including spices, extracts, personal care products, health and
beauty aids, household and laundry products and gift collections.
Representatives sell through Watkins party plan, fundraising programs,
direct-to-the-home sales, fairs, bazaars, home shows, catalog sharing,
business gifts, commercial sales, and of course, the World Wide Web.
Watkins recently introduced Quick Serve, a new service that allows customers
to order from a Watkins Representative and have their products sent directly
to their home via UPS - ensuring faster delivery and saving time for the
Representative.
