For the edification of those who may have been following an earlier
thread entitled "Try this one!", Christie and I have exchanged emails,
and I have decided, I hope with her blessing -- since I emailed this
to her early Thursday morning -- to bring the discussion back to the
Newsgroup where it belongs.

Christie,

OK. This is actually a message that ought to have been posted in the
Newsgroup
too, but I will answer it here. If you really want to be a positive
voice in the
Network Marketing industry, then you have a wonderful opportunity, and
actually
could make money. I will address these issues in order. And I also
will take
this opportunity to apologize to you for the mild-to-moderate flame
(that is an
"Internet" term for insult). I will do so in the same way I have
replied to you
in the previous posts in the Newsgroup - quote and comment.

There is no appropriate place to advertise "get rich quick" schemes.
The truth
is that if any promotion promises something that does not pass the
"stink test"
you do not want to be involved. The "stink test" is simple -- does
this smell
like a scam? Then it probably is one. How do I know if something
smells like a
scam? Does the promotion promise money in return for little or no
effort on your
part? Does it rely on greed rather than value? Does it include
promises of
un-ending multiplication, or "statistic" models that say something
like "sent
this to 10,000 email addresses, and if only 2% respond, you will still
get
$1000.00 (200x $5.00). Keep doing this with all the email addresses
you can
find." Does it involve using bulk-email, "guaranteed email lists" and
encourage
"sharing" this program through anonymous or deceptive posts to "every
newsgroup
on Usenet"? Is there any actual company that you can look up in an
independent
source, like Dunn and Bradstreet? No product/service, no company, no
history --
then it a scam.

If you know the concept of "return on investment" then you must know
that it
operated AT ALL TIMES, IN ALL THINGS. The Internet is not an
exception. If you
do not believe that one can get rich quick, then why would you even
want to give
the appearance of participating in "get rich quick" schemes? You do
not need to
"watch Barney all day", and you do not need to be involved with
dishonest
promotions as a way to pass the time, either. The simple truth is that
if there
is no investment, there is no return -- unless the promotion is a
scam, and you
really do not want to be teaching your children that it is OK to make
money by
tricking others out of theirs.

>It just
> seemed like an insult that you would write anything like this, in
any forum,
as you

Wrong, wrong, wrong! I am not involved in the same sort of schemes.
And that is
the biggest issue I have with these "get rich quick" promotions. There
is a
difference between legitimate Network Marketing and this crap (sorry,
but that
is what the "get rich quick" stuff is). When people like you are not
able to see
that difference, that is what hurts those of us who actually work with
a company
that provides real products or services. You seem to have somewhere
picked up
the idea that ALL Network Marketing is a fraud, so why not get
involved with the
worst frauds of all -- what is the difference?

If I

Yes, I am bashing these "silly, play at hobbies". They are exactly
what gives
real Network Marketing a bad name. People like you, who ought to know
better,
who understand the concept of Return on Investment, who teach honesty
and value
to their children, seem to think that all that is not operative in
Network
Marketing. Well, too often you are right. That does not mean that I,
or anyone
else who actually makes a living in this Industry, ought to stay
silent. In
fact, we ought to be far more active in raising holy hell when we see
what we
know to be frauds that will confuse, and ultimately only hurt, people
like you.
You need to be looking for a legitimate company, with a real service
or product,
something you can be PROUD of, so that you can teach your children
that you
practice what you preach.

I just gave you several ways to tell if a promotion is of value. If
you want to
learn a lot more, then start with your Better Business Bureau, read
MLM
publications like Upline Magazine or Network Marketing Today/MLM
Insider, get
Richard Poe's books "Wave 3" and "The Wave 3 Way to build your
Downline", go to
a used book store and see if they have a section on Network Marketing.
Get
educated -- it beats the heck out of watching Barney all day!

That is it. I have said my piece. I am going to post this to
alt.business.multi-level.scam as well as sending it directly to you
via reply
email. If you want to comment further, please do so in the Newsgroup.

Hi, Paul,
I've been following your and Janice's writings for quite some time now,
and appreciating every one of them. You are right on target. Thanks. In
fact, I am making a presentation to Business and Professional Women next
week, and would like permission to use this essay that you just wrote to
Christie to make the point about ROI and the core of the problem, which
is: There is no business, no profit, unless some kind of goods or service
changes hands for a price -- presumably a fair price.

Irene,

Absolutely, please feel free, and thank you for the compliment. I have also been
following your posts, and actually have a question or two for you -- I hope you
realize that I would not be trying to argue with you, just want to know a few
more details concerning something you are associated with. You can email me
direct at amyx at lawguard dot com or post here -- whichever you prefer.

Christie,

This is actually what Newsgroups ought to do -- the posts can actually be
helpful, not just to those addresses, but also to all those people who read
them. It does not have to be a bunch of people shouting at one another or just a
mindless "My program is better than yours!"

I have posted elsewhere in this group a suggestion that those of us (and those
of you who may be reading this) who want to, can get together and do something
constructive about all the scam/spam artists. Anyone interested, please speak
up.

Paul

Hey Paul...I was just joking! I knew what you 2 were doing, I was just joking! I
really think something needs to be done also. There needs to be some sort of watch
group for all these scams. Believe me, I was the most gullible person in the world
to all of these ads. Thanks to you, I came to my senses! Funny though, now that I
am half way thinking straight, I want to go and get them, off the net I mean, so
that others won't be foolish like I was.
By the way, I did search and find a page from the United States Postal Service that
DID say that the $5.00 letters WAS ILLEGAL! So for those of you out there
participating in them, I would really considering stopping if I were you. You never
know when the Postal Service will get ahold of one of them and I really feel sorry
for whoever's name is on the list at that time. It did not say what the fine or
punishment was, only that they were illegal.
There we go again, it all comes down to having a product to sell! If I can find the
address again, I will post it on this group.
Until then,
Christie
