With the currently booming market for laptop computers showing no
signs of abating, computer companies have continued to improve their
product lines, making their machines more and more powerful. Often,
laptops have replaced desktop machines for 'non-power' users.
With this rapid growth, many third party developers have maximized
their profits by rapidly developing after-market (third party) accessories
for a host of laptop models. These accessories often extend from small
items like mouse pads, and gradually grow to carrying cases, batteries,
and even PCMCIA cards/modules.
The market for the higher end products in The States is certainly
underdeveloped, with the emphasis being on mimicking the overpricing
policies adopted by the established computer companies.
We are an export firm that has been based in Hong Kong for some
40 years. If you are interested in the import of computer based
accessories or any electronic items, please feel free to get back to me.
After 40 years in the trade, our prices are *very* competitive on World
markets. Catalogues can be arranged immediately by snail mail or email
(gifs uuencoded). If you would like to receive the gif of a sample
catalogue of Mac Powerbook/Acer/Thinkpad batteries, just send mail with
the subject header "get jmsl" - my server will get them out to you instantly.

Kind Regards,
Sunil Mulchand.

Has anyone else requested this? I did and it is a uuencoded file, and it
is from someone named "Charlatan".

With the computer viruses in the UUencoded files running around last
month, and with a name like this, I really don't want to try decoding it
on my system, let alone ddeal with a Charlatan from Hong Kong.

Any thoughts?

Hello Jim,

Here are some thoughts.

First of all, NEVER do business with a person who does not use his real name.
Secondly, if you do intend to do business, verify that the company is on the up and up. In Hong Kong that should easy to do.

Thirdly, if you suspect a computer virus, keep good notes. There are means to prosecute individuals, companies or organizations who attempt cause harm in this fashion.

Best Regards,

I would like to put an end to this in the simplest of fashion. I posted
the original message. Included in the message was a complete company
signature. The information included within this signature is %100 correct.
Some of the people who read the post and responded, serious clients,
called me direct in Hong Kong to verify this.
If anyone would like to verify our firm, or any firm in Hong Kong, this
is quite a simple process. Call the Trade Development Council in Hong
Kong. Being a firm that has been established here for almost half a
century, this will an almost instantaneous method to put your mind at ease
- if that is, you are wary (and you should be)
The reply received under the name Charlatan was a mistake by the
auto-respond mailbot. I dont feel the mistake was that major, as the .sig
on name, and Message ID on my mail all point to the same addresses.
The concept of trust has certainly fallen to very low levels on the
net. Sweeping comments such as " NEVER do business with a person who does
not use his real name." are very very well-advised. The fact that I DID
USE MY REAL NAME should enter into the picture for at least one nanosecond
before accusing myself of being a 'virus spreader.'
Regardless, I am confident that all serious buyers will (and should)
still use the telephone to verify their dealings.

Kind Regards,

Sunil Mulchand
