I'm fixin' to lease some retail space for a barber shop. Other sites I've
looked at were older (1920's) with 12 foot ceilings, some with tin squares,
lots of class. But, it looks like I'm stuck with a 1985 vintage building,
and a typical drop ceiling with unimaginative white rectangles and rectangle
fluorescent lights. Anyone have any creative ideas what can be done to
spruce things up a bit?
10,000 Thanks,

A pizza shop around here has painted an excerpt from a children's book
in big, orange, letters over the whole ceiling. It looks pretty cool,
and that particular bit is about fixing food.

Google.com is where I found that link. I think I searched on tin drop-in
ceiling.

Anyone ever tried covering those white square ceiling tiles with fabric, or
maybe wallpaper?

It can be done. Add some batting, wrap with fabric then staple to the
backside. Maybe even add some tufting.

I've seen those ugly drop ceiling tiles replaced with beautiful cuts of
wood.... stained and polyed. It was a very rich look.

That's a good idea . . . I wonder if anyone makes adhesive wood veneer wide
enough (and frugal enough) to put over ceiling tiles . . . hmmmm . . .

Brighten the room inexpensively with a couple of cans of paint. You can
turn a 2x4 tile into a 2x2 tile be leaving a 1" white (assuming the grid is
white) stripe in the middle of the tile and contrasting paint colors on each
half. Depending on the sytle of your barber shop, a color scheme matching
the decor' shouldn't be hard to choose.

An alternate option, depending on what is above the grid is to remove the
tiles, leave the grid, and airspray everything above flat black. This will
create the illusion of higher ceilings, however not make the utilities and
extra space a focal point. With this option you may want to consider
removing the fluorescent fixtures and installing high intensity pendent
lights. These small lights give a classy "gallery' feel and can be focused
on specific areas (work areas, register area, sitting area, wall art....)

Good luck

I saw laminate wood flooring on clearance yesterday for cheap.... I don't
see why something like that couldn't be used.... just dropped in upside
down. It's not like people will be inches away from it, eyeing it and
saying."hmm that looks like laminate wood flooring.

If you're talking "design" be sure ANY material you put on the ceiling meets
the minimum interior finish requirements for flame and smoke spread as
published by the NFPA and your local building authority.

Dropping the ceiling height in certain areas. A dropped ceiling is often a secondary ceiling, hung below the main ceiling. It may also be referred to as a drop ceiling, T-bar ceiling, false ceiling. MADAANINDIA deals in drop ceiling.
