I am doing a remodel and want to install two slabs of marble or granite on
the floors as hearths. What is the standard depth and width of the hearths.
Does it end with the line of the firebox or extend beyond it and how far
out? Secondly, how do I affix it to concrete and how do I affix it to
plywood. I have those two scenerios. Any help would be appreciated. The
plywood scenerio is upstairs in a bedroom and I am wondering if there is a
material lighter in weight than granite or marble as I am placing on the
floor and I am dealing with 2X6 construction. Downstairs it will go
directly onto a concrete slab so I can use anything.

Better get a copy of the applicable building code from your local
department. There are required clearances to combustibles above and on
the sides of the firebox, and required minimum hearth dimensions, both
based on the size of the firebox opening.

You can stick marble or granite to plywood with the same adhesive that
stone fabricators use to stick countertops to plywood subtops
with--call one and find out where to get it.

Standard 18" in front 6" to side.
Check local code
Run lengths of solid 2 x 6 bridging under stone area prior to install
to remove flex from floor.
