I thought we had the flooring in the foyer, gallery, and kitchen of
our planned house all settled. Then my wife went to a newly opened
"Home Expo" (upscale Home Depot showroom, same company). She saw a
product called Amtico flooring. Website:
http://www.amtico.com/nsie_residential/residential.asp

This looks like it is about as expensive as tile, and the promotional
material says it's better than anything else (naturally).

Does ayone here know anything about this product or have any
experience with it--good, bad or indifferent?

Thanks for any information.

Amtico has been in business for many decades. It is a quality company with
quality products. Unfortunately, you have'nt limited our response to any
one product.
If you like it, buy it. It is as good a manufactured line, dollar for
dollar, as you will find.
Is it so good, you choose it over something you prefer? No, of course not.

Thanks for your reply, Jim. The site and the store personnel are not
very informative as to what the product actually is. Maybe I have it
wrong, but I believe it is vinyl flooring material made up in
individual slabs and pieces to be installed on the jobsite, and made
to simulate the appearance of stone, wood, metal, marble, ceramic,
granite, glass, shell, slate, etc.

As to limiting to one product, we are looking specifically at the
following: "Elm, W698E, Sizes: 3" x 36" (76mm x 915mm), 4.5" x 36"
(114mm x 915mm), 6" x 36" (152mm x 915mm), 3" x 9" (76mm x 229mm),
Thickness: 2.5mm, Finish: Tick, Edge: Beveled. This wood is available
in Random Plank. Each consignment will contain equal amounts of 76mm
x 915mm (3" x 36"); 152mm x 915mm (6" x 36") and 229mm x 915mm (9" x
36"). With super tough finish."

Even though the text says "This wood," I think it is vinyl made to
look like wood.

What you think is vinyl is actually the wear surfacing. The product is
wood.
Take a look at most any of the 'Pergo' types, and they look like vinyl too
when viewed very close-up.

Not to muddy the waters as I'm not familiar with the specific products in
question, but isn't Amtico known primarily for their vinyl tile? And Pergo is
plastic laminate on top of a wood-based substrate - it really is plastic/vinyl
you're looking at.

I have found information as to the composition of the product on the
Amtico site and I will cut and paste it below. Now, back my original
question--any experience with and opinions about the product?

---------------From the Amtico Website--------------------

What is Amtico made from? Amtico floor tiles are made from resin
compounded with high quality plasticizers and stabilizers, all
compressed under pressure and temperature. Many tiles closely
resemble natural products, these are made from specially printed films
sandwiched between a wear layer and a backing. Some tiles are
engineered to have a specific emboss or a metallic appearance. Many
of these manufacturing methods have been developed by and are unique
to Amtico. All Amtico tiles have: - a non-porous construction -
long-lasting durability - excellent appearance retention -
authenticity of colours and patterns - resilience for underfoot
comfort - exceptional colour-fastness - beautiful looks which are easy
to maintain.

Where is Amtico made? Amtico is proud to manufacture all its own
flooring. This allows total control over quality and reliability of
delivery. Amtico have tile manufacturing facilities in Coventry
England and Atlanta Georgia, USA.

My parents put in Amtico in the baths and kitchen over 10 years ago.
Have only used damp mop on them for 10 years and they still look like
new. One of the best flooring purchases they've ever made.

No, I do not work for or own stock in Amtico. I just believe in credit
where credit is due.

Now I am confused. Your original description was for "flooring," which you
clarified as planks that looked like wood. Amtico is and has been a tile
floor manufacturing company (one of the very best) for many years. They are
not limited in product and at one time were a producer of wall paneling.
Since the product was represented as wood, and you say is in plank form
resembling wood (or a vinyl simulation), it is quite natural for Amtico to
manufacture a product . . . as is very nearly everyone else . . . to compete
with Pergo & its many imitators. Your last post sound like a tile, not a
plank. Sorry, I should have checked out your catalog number before I opened
my mouth.
(I'm still vague as to what the product is or looks like.)
I'll stick with my original premise, however, the company makes quality
products, and if you like it, buy it.

Thanks to both you and Gary. You have answered my question as to
amtico reputation and quality.

I have been confused about the product also. In the Home Expo store,
what we saw looked like wood. Their website says that their product
can look like wood, tile, stone, etc.

Anyway, it must be a good product, but high-end I think.
