Not exactly a construction question, but anyway ... My son decided it would
be a good idea to write on the wall with Chapstick. How do we get it off???
It's written on a wall with matte finish latex paint. I'm afraid if I don't
get it off completely, when I paint over it, the paint won't take. I've
tried Fantastik and scrubbing with soapy water (laundry detergent) but it's
still there!

Any suggestions?

I suspect you're going to have to lightly sand it.
Not knowing anymore about the surface type or whats below it, thats all I
can offer.
(my son wrote on a screen door with a magic marker one time. Didn't notice
it til 3 months later when the sun was at just the right angle)
Kidz, they do the damndest thingz.......

It's new construction (been in here one year now) so it's likely only primer
and one coat over drywall.

I'd try (on a small spot first) "brake clean", available at an automotive
parts retailer. Spray onto a sponge or paper towel, then blot up the
Chapstick.

Isn't Chapstick wax based?

If it is, a heat gun or a blow drier might melt it off.

I bet acetone or paint thinner would take it off.

Get the manufacturer from the tube or from the library, search for its email
address if not on the tube, and write them. Explain the surface you have and
ask them to ask their engineers for a solvent. I'd bet it's not the first
time they've had the request.

Low temp iron over paper towels - keep changing the towels and wiping off the
excess. Final cleanup with solvent. I'd try mineral spirits or alcohol to
start. There's no need to sand.

Try products called "Goof Off" or "Oops"

If that doesnt work, you can always just scrape it off with a
sheetrock knife and then reapply some joint compound, sand it, and
paint it again.
