*** SPOILERS for Buffy 1.05 Never Kill a Boy on the First Date ***

Well I thoroughly enjoyed this ep! This is how I want my Buffy to be.
There were yer scary vamps, wishful-thinking-relationships, unexpected
plot twists and lots of very funny moments. And, of course, some
developments on the Slayer-Watcher front.

Buffy still pretends she can have a normal social life next to her
'work' as a Slayer. As far as a teenage-girl's life can be considered
normal. This week's beau is called Owen (whereas I thought last week's
was called Angel). Of course, Giles tries to convince her otherwise, but
ultimately he gives in to this "strangest girl". As always, Buffy will
have to learn from experience that Giles is right. A Slayer can't have a
normal relationship with a guy whilst keeping her secret identity. Which
is exactly Xander's point as well, for his own personal reasons.

Buffy not only learns that dating boys and slaying vampires don't mix
(it attracts fear-loving freaks at best), she also learns that trying
too hard to mix those two things gets other people in danger. Which
becomes painfully obvious to her when she arrives at the Funeral Home
and Giles is gone (well, hiding). She'll have to live with the fact that
being the Slayer has dating freaks or not at all as negative side
effects. Which is sorta Xander's point, but I'm betting my money on
Angel (not bad looking for a freak eh?).

Willow and Xander pretending to be dating was majorly funny. For us
viewers at least. For Willow it was a dream momentarily coming close to
true. For Xander it was... well... let's just say a necessity. Blind
fool! How could he not be enchanted by her adorableness while holding
her?
*cough* Sorry, I let myself go there for a moment. It won't happen
again.... in this review.

Angel showed up again to do his usual routine. Nice timing! He was
clearly very pleased to see Buffy performing the dating ritual. Not! And
hey, guess what, Buffy didn't mind seeing him too. Well she did because
she was on a date with Owen. Isn't the life of a teenage-girl oh so
complicated? Let alone a teenage-Slayer-girl?

This ep featured a first head-to-head between Buffy and Cordelia. And
Buffy won on both counts (Owen and Angel). Guess they won't become
friends in the foreseeable future.

The Annointed One... let's call this one a score for the Master (and for
the prophecies of course). The Master has an advantage to the Slayer and
her Slayerettes this time. So, this little boy is the Master's great
warrior. Boy am I eager to find out what it can do. It's a little boy,
so I'm guessing he will annoy people to death (can you tell how fond I
am of little children?). What a horrible death to die by the way.

And for an example of the great humor in this ep, and a perfect delivery
of the lines, let me just quote this:

Buffy: It's not that big a deal. It's just a bunch of people getting
together.
Willow: It's a very big deal!
Buffy: It's not!
Willow: It is. (spots Giles) Tell her!
Giles: I'm afraid it's very big.
Willow: (smiles at Buffy) Thank you! (turns back to Giles, confused)
Wait!

Bye, Patrick

Indeed. It's very much a people ep, with arc developments. Buffy is
great, Giles is a hoot, and Willow and Xander are, um, as well.

Riiight...

Yeah, but Angel's dark and mysterious and hangs back in the shadows 'n
stuff like that. Not handy if you're looking for a date.

Great Giles lines in this ep. In fact, great lines all around. Buffy has
a knack for walking all over Giles, though.

Well, yeah. Xander's not even thinking about that, he just wants an
excuse. One interesting little thing I did notice (though it could be my
mind playing tricks on me or something..) was this:

Xander: "You're right. I don't trust that Owen guy, it's the eyes.
They're crazy"

The way he does the the 'crazy' is very Dennis Hopper in 'Apocalypse
Now'. If I remember it correctly, it's spot on. Hmmm...planning?

Well, later on it atracts...well, vampires and fear loving freaks.
You're right. Never mind me.

Again. Xander's point. That's his excuse, not his point. But yeah, Angel
looks like he could be a winner here..

<innocent>Not that I know anything about that, of course</innocent>

Don't worry, it happens to all of us from time to time (Xander. Idiot.)

Nope. Or ever, really. Not real friends anyway.

Hehe...you are, of course, refering to 'The Annoying One' right? Oh
wait, that isn't his actual name? Huh? Oh well...

Hehe...and it gets better and better ;o)
