First of all, overall impression: Not a very good ep. We've had much
better stuff.
OK, lets start at the beginning now (and I'll try to make it shorter
than my WaH reveiw ;-): The previously on Angel bit was a little odd.
Why show Phantom Dennis in that bit when the actual air time he gets is
considerably less. I would have liked more phantasmical acting,
personally.
Party scene was funny, particularly Wesley trying to be cool and failing
miserably at pick up lines. Scarily pathetic. Angel was brooding
(nothing new) but the imagined dancing bit was funny to a degree...not
super hilarious for me. Maybe 'cause its been in that damn spoilery
trailer thing all week. Wesley is still a bit of social misfit, and a
terrible liar (Angel is probably the only character in either show that
can, on occasion, lie convincingly...well, Giles is pretty good at it
too, and Buffy was in 'enemies', but thats besides the point here ;-)
Funnier was the moment the next day at the office with Cordys comment
"He was cooler than you", describing Wesley. Possibly the worst insult
she's come up with in (not so) recent history! Ouch. Then of course,
Wesley being broke (Why isn't Giles broke? What does he do? Live on
welfare? doubt it..) and gets hired by Angel. Brown noser in the firs
degree.
Got silly from there. Wasn't all terrible, but not too great. Yay. Other
dimensional Princess who lietraly gets hot when she's horny. Doing the
Mojo thing on Angel (oh, rah.) Social commentary thinly disguised as a
plot line (whole submissive women thing, removing that whatsit...valid
subject, important subject, trivilized a little here, easy way out.)
Lone woman figthing all the men to save the females of her species, blah
blah. Only thing that makes her more interesting is that she doesn't
have too much of a moral structure as far as earth inhabitants are
concerned ;-)
Angel goes to Ice depot. Little thing bugging me again. How tinted does
the glass have to be to protect him fully (and I'm mainly referring to
the windeshield, door windows being very dark I can buy...then again,
we've seen him and other vamps in cars before in borad daylight) Very
brightly lit building as usual :-(
Meets demon guy from other dimension, plays tough guy. Lets demon go.
Exhibits amazing portrait drawing skills once again and draws a nice pic
from memory of our demonic friend. Research mode is on. Next, breaks
into security office place to find out more info. We are treated to
Angel metamorphosis into Batman once again (Which I personally like and
think is very amusing :-), starting with the active reeling in thingys
on his twin grappling hooks :-) Takes info(leaves money of course..he's
an HONEST burglar :-p ), gets his ass kicked by princess lady (Jhiera?
That her name?). Well, pretty much anyway.
Unbeknowst to her, he follows her. We see some more great fun Batman
moves: Angel walks off the edge of a building from approx 3 stories or
more up. Nice background shot, personally love it when they do
that...but I a;ready said that. So far, its ok, a little odd, with all
this interdimensional stuff..
More funniness and silliness ensues. The car following scene with the
mobile is funny because of the reality of that picture; FINALLY a movie
were the battery is low, the connection is bad, etc. etc. Real life
intrudes on Angel. Plus the usual misunderstandings between Cordy and
Angel are worsened just that much more... Of course, his tailing skills
suck, and he's (obviously) spotted. Princess sends the security guys
after him, and Angel goes into a wonderfully amusing bit about a
painting (La Musique au Tuileries by Monet) In that amusing little bit
of 'Angel as a tour guide' we learn that he probably met Baudelaire (he
must have been evil at the time though, no? pre-1863? Or was that just
post curse-time?) and inspired a little poem. Hehe...
Then comes the Sliders moment, and a naked female (most nude we've seen
in either show, I believe...Angel's own butt is the only one with longer
and more air time so far ;-) pops out, fight, Angel does the hero thing,
girl doesn't make it, Angel takes Jhiera back to his place. She doesn't
trust him really, but they are clearly attracted to one another (didn't
see THAT one coming, noooo...) Much sillyness ensues, including Wesley
and Cordy tailing demon guys, them ending up at this weird guru/helath
spa type place, little bit of fighting in the dark (Wheee!!!
Superpowers!!!) and a great escape, Angel makes scary face a freaks out
the demons (yeah, whatever.) Empty threats towards Jhiera the next day
:"Be Good or else I'll come get you!" Again with the physical attraction
thing (glowy red thing, heat wave gizmo..)
More humor from Wesley, who has groveeling down to an artfrom, and is
scared of being fired. Hehehe..funny stuff. About Wesley in general,
he's a bit of an enigma; still a little one dimensional, and an odd mix
of completely incompetent klutz (can't step out of a car..) and
reasonably skilled fighter. Then again, Cordy also got away from our
trans-dimensioal friends, and she has no training to speak of. Were they
wimps or something?
Overall, I'm none too pleased with this ep. Thought it was mediocre at
best, and I have this sinking feeling that Jhiera is here to stay and
will return from time to time. Great...
Next week's Preview doesn't offer much in a way of a better ep either, I
fear (don't feel like adding more spoiler space or discussing it...if
you've seen it, you'll know the lack of originality in the concept..Hope
it turns out better than this weeks ep though. It can be treated well or
not at all.)
Score: 5/10 (possibly a little more or less though) after first viewing.
Maybe its been placed in a bad light after several stronger eps
(Expecting was better, IMHO)
well, I guess being brief isn't one of my skills...oh well;-)

Buffy wasn't a good liar in Enemies. Just SMG acting normal
Buffy in a plot that was fouled by the writers.

Wasn't he covered in a blanket, like in Somnambulist when Wesley
drove him into the police station car park? (And how come anyone
can just drive into a police station car park?)

Anyone care to dig up that particular poem?

True, I guess...Personally kinda liked it, but wasn't very in
character...Okay, so none of them are particularly good liars (excluding
Angelus, maybe. And Giles. Well, at keeping secrets in any case... ;-)

Probably the blanket deal. Thing is, the whole Angel in brightly lit
rooms bothers me from time to time. This was one such time. As for
police garages, I did find that incredibly odd. Talk about lack of
security. Some sort of check is to be expected. Of course, our killer
vamp friend got in even further unhindered ;-) Possibility is that other
institutions are housed in the same building (social services and such)
and share the same underground parking, in which case general access
should be a little easier to come by..

I'll go check, see If I can find it online. Don't own any Baudelaire

I thought it was middle of the pack, no drama or anything. Not crappy
though.

I think it was part of the Angel being depressed routine. "Still dead?
........ Know the feeling"
I think he wishes he was alive again.
د thought all the windows were very dark. Maybe he was covered up some more
in the car... (big sunglasses or something =])

it later...

La Vampire (first publist in 1855 in La Revue des Deux Mondes)
Toi qui, comme un coup de couteau,
Dans mon coeur plaintif es entrée;
Toi qui, forte comme un troupeau
De démons, vins, forte et parée,
De mon esprit humilié
Faire ton lit et ton domaine;
- Infâme à qui je suis lié
Comme un forçat à la chaîne,
Comme au jeu le joueur têtu,
Comme à la bouteille l'ivrogne,
Comme aux vermines la charogne,
- Maudite, maudite sois-tu!
J'ai prié le glaive rapide
De conquérir ma liberté
Et j'ai dit au poison perfide
De secourir ma lâcheté.
Hélas! le poison et le glaive
M'ont pris en dédain et m'ont dit:
«Tu n'es pas digne qu'on t'enlève
A ton esclavage maudit,
Imbécile! - de son empire
Si nos efforts te délivraient,
Tes baisers ressusciteraient
Le cadavre de ton vampire!»
This is what altavista's translation makes of it:
It looks a bit odd, plus it didn't translate some of the words.
Anyone want to make a better translation ?
You who, like a blow of knife,
my plaintive heart entered;
You who, strong like a herd
Of daemons, wines, strong and avoided,
Of my spirit humiliated
To make your bed and your field;
-Infamous on which I am related
Like a convict to the chain,
How with the play the obstinate player,
As with the bottle the drunkard,
As vermins the carrion,
-Maudite, maudite are you!
I requested the glaive rapid
To conquer my freedom
And I said to the perfidious poison
To help my cowardice.
Alas! the poison and the glaive one
Took of scorn to me and said to me:
" You are not worthy that you are removed
from your slavery maudit,
Imbecile! - of its empire
If our efforts delivered you,
Your kisses ressusciteraient the corpse of your vampire! "

What's this, an automated on-line translator? You can do funny
things with those. Start with an English text, have it
translated into Russian, then into Japanese or something, and
back into English. An intelligent text will be reduced to
dribbling Xanderism. (If you don't have anything better to do.)

Well, I got bored, ran this thru a translater
(English->French->German->Enlgish) and this is what comes out...sort of
intelligeble (partws of it..)
What is it that it is, an on-line automated compiler/translator? They
can make strange things with those. If you begin with an English text,
translates into Russian then into Japanese or something and again in
English. An intelligent text reduced to gutters Xanderism. (if you
