Alright. Who managed to keep his eyes dry?
<no one raises hands>
That's what I thought.
<Willow in that dress...>
Lots of things happened in this episode. Which is surprising because, judged
by its title, the episode should revolve around the coming prom. But there's
(the usual) relational angst, a big revelation, an very noble act and a big
surprise. Let's start with the first.
<Buffy in a wedding dress>
Sweet dreams are made of... flames. The wedding scene with Buffy and Angel.
And no one else! Why, because no one really supports their relationship. Or
because they still think they have to be quiet about it? And then they walk
into the light. Angel doesn't burst into flames, which doesn't surprise me.
But Buffy does, which does surprise me. It's when they go into the light
that Angel loses Buffy. He just can't be with her that way, because of the
effect that Buffy so flamingly demonstrates.
What we could have seen coming, especially after the Mayor's pep talk,
happens tonight. Angel breaks up with Buffy, and is leaving Sunnydale right
after the Mayor is killed in the way ascending demons are killed. Or not of
course, but then he's leaving for hell again (or heaven, who knows?).
Breaking up gives you a bad feeling in the gut, so what better place to do
it than in the sewers? Buffy first thinks Angel had his brain washed by the
Mayor. And she doesn't even know about the little conversation he had with
her mother. But I think Angel is old and wise enough to come to this
decision all by himself. Although wise...? I think he made the wrong
decision, at least based on the wrong reasons. He (and they) keeps saying
Buffy needs a chance of a normal future, to lead a normal life. <Cordy>
Hellooo!! </Cordy> Aren't we forgetting a certain aspect of her life that
makes her life expectations a little less promising than usual? So give this
girl a break than. Let her at least decide by herself what makes her happy.
And she has decided Angel makes her happy. So they can't have kids, big
deal! Who's going to take care of them when she dies before reaching the age
of thirty? Why try so hard to give Buffy a normal life, a normal
relationship? She isn't normal, and her life isn't normal. So by what
standards do we define normal? And I'm not even going in to the practical
aspects of combining your Slayer duties with a normal relationship. Wrong,
wrong, wrong if you ask me, and totally unrealistic. I would at least have
expected more from a 200+ year old vampire. (there.. that controversial
enough for ya ;o)
The result of the break up? Buffy crying in Willow's lap, feeling like she
can't breathe... <get me some tissues>
<Willow in that dress!>
So why does Cordy have a job in that dress shop? Because her Father forgot
to pay his taxes right. So now he, and more important Cordy, is broke.
That's her little secret, and Xander finds out. Time for Xander to gets his
revenge on Cordy for dissing him all that time. But our Xander isn't made of
that. He's a real gentleman. When the opportunity arrives that he can
embarrass Cordy in front of the Scoobies, he does the opposite and covers
for her! In your face, Cordelia. Not quite what you expected huh? Good for
Xander. It shows that he really has grown, ever since The Zeppo. Now who do
you think paid for the rest of that dress? I'm guessing Xander, again.
So Xander's not into the revenge routine. Why's that? Could it have anything
to do with the fact that his date to the prom is a former revenge demon? And
that ain't a bad date. Think of all the exciting stories she can tell. No
chance of getting bored!
<Willow in that *dress*>
Hellhounds are threatening the fun factor of the coming prom. So that means
returning the dresses and tuxedos and hoping for a refund, right? Wrong!!
Buffy is going to make sure everyone gets a great prom. A night to remember.
And she seems pretty damned determined about it. If she can't have the prom
of her dreams herself, one highlight in her evil&death-ridden high school
years, than so help her god she will make sure her friends can. That, and
kicking ass makes great comfort food. The break up with Angel was reality
hitting her hard in the face. She's the Chosen One. And you can weep and
whine about that, but that won't make Sunnydale any safer. She has no
control over her own happyness. But she can make sure no hellhound raising
freak spoils the fun for the rest.
And she's done just in time to slip into a nice dress and go to the prom
herself. At least she can try to have a good time with her friends. Like
Willow. Who, by the way, looks nothing short of fabulous in that dress!!
But the class of '99 has a little surprise for the Slayer. All the unnatural
events and creatures, and Buffy fighting those, haven't gone unnoticed by
the students of Sunnydale High. And her efforts are well appreciated,
because the Class of '99 has the lowest mortality rate of any graduating
class in Sunnydale history! And as a token of their appreciation, the award
Buffy the Class Protector. And Buffy gets a standing ovation. <get me some
more tissues>
A bit strange, when you think of it. Not strange that the students are aware
of the supernatural things that are going on in Sunnydale. Those mysterious
deaths should get one wondering. But why do they choose to stay in Sunnydale
anyway? Is it the weather? I mean, how hard is it to convince their parents
to move to a less demon populated town. Or is it the adults who live in a
permanent state of denial? And I guess real estate prices are rather
favourable in Sunnydale.
Anyway, trying to hide her secret identity has all been in vain for Buffy.
And the students seem to accept all of it as a fact of life.
Next two episodes we focus on graduation. And on the ascension of course.
Wrapping up that arc in the last two episodes. Just like Angel, I need
closure. And I'm completely satisfied with the way the High School book is
being closed. Now the prom is behind us, it's time to find a way to stop the
Mayor. Let's see how they close *that* book. Time for me now to continue
dreaming about *Willow in that dress!!!*
