No spoilers either, but I for one thought the two part pilot was superb, and
it's a real shame that they didn't use that as the first episode.

Going away in about ten minutes, so this will have to be of the quick
no spoiler comments kind.
1.10 - Fairly good, although not the best Joss episode ever.
Enjoyable, but tinged with melancholy, as it was the first ep I saw
after I knew it was cancelled. The SFX were fun
1.11 & 1.12 - I haven't got around to watching the aired version yet,
apart from the very first scene (which is new). I personally think
it's great and am gratified to see everyone else agree on the net - I
had feared some people might find it too slow. You're right, it would
have made a far better episode. I kinda hope that if Sky ever get
round to showing it over here that they start the series the right
way, although I'm doubtful it would happen.

Mild spoilers for the pilot episode, "Serenity", now lie below.

I saw the poor quality copy of the pilot that was floating around the
net before I saw any of the other episodes, and I really liked it.
On rewatching it seems a lot less slow, especially the second half
where the pace really picks up. Even having seen the later episodes
it never feels exposition heavy - and the one truly exposition-dump
scene about the battle of Serenity has been replaced by the extra
scene at the start which gives you the first-hand version of events!
Very enjoyable. All the cast nail their characters right from the
start, the western elements of the setting don't overwhelm the SF
ones, and the focus is firmly on the people and how they're affected
by the events.
I especially like the downbeat theme of people trying to get by as
best they can. It comes through in the series, but you really feel it
here, perhaps because the humour and action are more low key.
In fact, the slightly low key tone is probably the only significant
difference between the pilot and series, making all the bad buzz that
surrounded the shooting of a second pilot very misleading. The fact
that the original pilot has now been aired exactly as intended (apart
from one extra scene and some minor cuts to make room for it) shows
that everyone involved knew exactly what they were doing right from
the start.
