On a web site (don't remember which one) I found this Spike
quote from I Only Have Eyes For You:
" Our man Angel here likes to talk, but he's not much for
action. All hat and no cat. "
However, in AleXander's transcript Spike says:
" Our man Angel here likes to talk but he's not much for
action. All hat and no cattle. "
Which is correct, cat or cattle?
And what does this line mean anyway?

It's cattle and I would assume that it's a cowboy metaphor. You know,
someone's dressed all cowboy and has never gone near a cow in his life <g> A
weekend cowboy of the Garth Brooks wannabe type, a fake.
An odd remark for a supposedly British vamp though - maybe Spike has a thing
for cowboy films as well as Man U?
Cally
That's what I would have guessed-- though I couldn't think of a good way
to explain it. <g>
Of course, I could probably bluff my way through an explanation of the cat
version. Though I don't know if Spike would be one to read Dr. Seuss.

Basically he all mouth no trousers, talks the talk, doesn't walk the
walk, doesn't follow through with his threats....you get the idea :-)

Who still can't get his default (or any other) sig to work :-/

It's cat, and probably a reference to "The Cat in the Hat" by Dr. Suess.
Although why Angel represents a hat-less cat is a poser ... maybe he -does-
eat green eggs and ham ...

Wipe them out. All of them
Uh, no it isn't. I have the video and it's cattle. I also have the shooting
script (note; *not* the transcript) and, yep, it's cattle again.

So, um, if you don't mind me asking, what does -that- mean? At least my way
you come up with a vaguely plausible explanation ^_^
*blink*
Have you not read the rest of the thread, then, or what?
To quote, permissionless, from Cally:
"It's cattle and I would assume that it's a cowboy metaphor. You know,
someone's dressed all cowboy and has never gone near a cow in his life <g>
A weekend cowboy of the Garth Brooks wannabe type, a fake."
I'd say that's an explanation that's more than vaguely posable. He[1] is
a poser [according to this quote], someone who's big on looking (talking)
without being (doing). The parallel that's being drawn, here, is to
someone who dresses like a cowboy, or at least like they think a cowboy
should be-- boots, jeans, really big cowboy hat-- and pretends to be a big
buff[2] ol' cowboy, without knowing which end of the cattle is the rear.
In many ways, that makes more sense than a cat in the hat explanation,
since I can't think offhand of any reason why a hat without a cat in it
would be an insult in that way. And I really don't see Spike reading
Seuss. But I could be wrong. *grin*
Mir/Isa
[1] If you read the original question, you know which he I'm talking
about. I'm leaving the identity off so I don't have to re-spoiler it.
[2] That's kind of pathetic. I can no longer type "buff"; my fingers
automatically add a 'y' to the end of it. It's not even a matter of
conscious thought any more. Like when I was on IRC on a network that
loved splitting, and had to type "/server" so often that I could no longer
type just "serve".
It is cat. I've just played the sound. I swear it saids Cat. If he said
cattle then I would hear a 'le' on the end. If you don't beleive me ask for
the sound. Wav format. I think he tuts at the end. All hat and cat and he
emphisises the 't'. Then again I could be wrong. Which I most probably am.

Swear all you like-- it's still 'cattle'. :)
For one thing-- "cat" is the beginning syllable of "cattle"; it's not like
I'm claiming he said "squeegle" instead. For another, the "cat" syllable
of "cattle" is the emphasized one. In some accents, the "le" sound is
either hard to hear, or close enough to a glottal stop that it's not
really a separate sound. And if he said "Cat'l", with the l unstressed,
it may come out sounding like cat instead.
I *have* listened to the sound again, and it *is* cattle.

Maybe I shouldn't have asked, and checked for myself. I
finally did, there's a very clear sound clip at The Realms
of Darkness, an excellent Spike and Drusilla site:
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Shuttle/4032/
Spike says "cattle".

Okay, so it's cattle. Definitively. Without a shaodw of a doubt. But can
I at least pretend he says cat and hang on to my fading Dr. Suess metafor?
Please .....? ^_-
