So <clears throath> that was the freshman. Anticipation had been high,
because everyone had been without Buffy for waaay too long (but that's a
common thing with season openers), but this time we had to get used to a
whole new setting as well: College. So did this ep live up to these high
expectations? Well it did and it didn't.
As far as season openers go, this was fairly cliché. Some people met
again for the first time since the summer vacation (only this time Buffy
hadn't left, but it had been Xander. Who's voice, by the by, sounded a
lot deeper upon meeting Buffy than it normally did) and Buffy had to
deal with her surroundings. It wasn't very bad though, the ep never
reached the standards of, say, "when she was bad" (the s2 opener), but
it was no "go fish" either (yes, not a season opener, but that *was* a
bad ep). The joy of finally seeing a new episode of Buffy firmly
outranked the cliché-ness at first watching so I definatly enjoyed
myself. Not sure if it will be one to watch over and over again though.
Now for the characters and their looks: First of, I heard a lot of
people say they despised willow's new hairdo, but I liked it. Made her
look more mature, which I think really reflects the more mature willow
we were seeing in this episode. And of course, she was incredibly sweet
as usual ;-) Buffy looked like Buffy and Oz looked like Oz. No big
changes for the good or bad there. Xander *sounded* more mature when he
first met Buffy in the Bronze. His voice was lower. He seemed to have
lost that later on in the ep, so what the hell was going on there??
Now for the story. There wasn't a whole lot of it. Most of the ep was
used to introduce the new surroundings and set the situation during the
new season. That gave way to some great moments: Oz saying the new
surroundings were confusing to him as well, Buffy at giles' appartment
(that had me rotflmao), Xander screwing up a movie quote, Xander and a
stripjoint (very bad, but extremly funny, visual place), Buffy getting
kicked out of popular culture (a scene that really captured the
atmosphere of the ep) etc. The main story obviously wasn't as important
as the surroundings (which I liked. I miss that in Angel), but sunday
was a cool vamp. Not as cool as spike and dru, granted, but fairly cool
nontheless. She was delt with fairly soon when Buffy came to her senses
(she really shouldn't have messed with the class protector award). Too
bad she can't return. But of course the main thing, which I assume will
be this seasons main storyline was the army like vampire attacking group
at the end. Loved the ending of the ep as well, with giles coming to
Buffy's rescue (*not*), that was funny in a hartwarming kind of way. The
end of the episode seemed to point out that the Scooby gang was complete
again and ready for whatever it is this season's gonna throw their way.
All in all a fun introductory episode, nothing more nothing less, but
carying that characteristic Buffy style, feel and constant quality
whe've come to expect from Buffy and what I've been wanting to see in
Angel all this time. Finally Buffy returned. And it was good. I can't
wait till next week....

Have to agree here. Finally seeing a new episode of Buffy (the repeats
on Net5 don't really count, had seem them all before...not that I mind,
mind you :-) As season openers go, I thought it was quite good. Placed
3rd in my list though (The S1 and S2 openers are better...then again,
the S1 'opener' doesn't really count, as its a pilot episode/mini movie
type thing :-) For me, just a big thrill seeing the gang again, and not
knowing what's going to happen..

I agree on the Willow's haircut thing..also, in one scene (early one,
walking with Buffy) she looked a lot taller than usual..or maybe Buffy
looked shorter...whatever...

The show had lots of great funny lines, and it was nice to see how
people had(n't) really changed. The Giles/Buffy bit was really great:
Giles: So I shouldn't have a private life?
Buffy: No! Because you're very, very old and its gross.
(well something like that anyway)
Xander was great, the whole scene. Once of his best moments, IMHO. A new
thing for him was knowing a big Word(!!!) (Reconnaissance? Like painting
and stuff? No that was the renaissance..:-) And of course his misquoting
SW E1 TPM: "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to
anger..no wait..." was really, really funny (well to a SW fan such as
myself anyway..) Even the Hugging scene with Kathy was good...on that
topic, so was the whole roommate fiasco thing (Celine Dion?!?!?!?!?! And

brilliant stuff. Even the opening scene with B and W (Not the baddies
from the Insider, the other B and W ;-) was funny, with the 'losing my
edge' thing, and the Vamp going off with a disgusted look on his face
after seeing the arsenal.

I had mixed feelings about her. Was kind of dreading the possibility
that she might stick around for more than one ep. Great lines though,
esp:
Vamp: "Does this sweater make me look fat?"
Sunday: "No, the fact that you're fat makes you look fat. THe sweater
just makes you look purple."
hee hee...
Seemed a little too strong. I mean, Buffy hasn't gotten that seriously
hurt in a long while (since Helpless, I think...)

Thats one thing that bugged me: the whole Buffy's arm thing. We heard
some nice cracking, but then we learn its not broken after all (?) a
little more clarity would help. We know she heals fast, but still....a
little too ambiguous for me. It did set the mood though, with her
running away scared, going off to Home, the Bronze, with her feelings of
inadequacy..Also noticed the nice little detail of Buffy answereing the
phone at home, with no response on the other end. We, of course, know it
was our good buddy Angel being slightly pathetic ;-)

I agree. A pretty good, solid Buffy episode...AND already biggish hint
for a Story Arc!!!(the 3 guys decked out in Military gear Tazeing the
runaway Vamp..) Wanna see where that goes (although Sadly I sort of know
already, because of some non-spoilerspace inclusions over in UTMB :-( I
want details now, though.) Also want Spike to show (which is what, in 2
weeks, judging from the crossover with Angel?)

It was better than the S3 finale, which doesn't say much, since
that was a big farce.
> As far as season openers go, this was fairly cliché.
I know it's tradition. Each season has its opening episode with
Buffy whining about the big bad world. But this time, they
overdid it. Really annoying.
And why this elaborate intro into this new environment? We are
not TV-illiterate. You don't have to take us by the hand. Skip
this stuff.
(No, that's not true. I'm completely baffled over this college
thing. I thought Buffy, Willow and Oz were supposed to go to
university. This looked more like summer camp. Just take your
pick of history, literature, pop-culture, psychology, geology.
Like picking a "pretpakket" people used to do at Dutch high
schools. What kind of academic education is this?)

About time. Willow was cute in S1 and S2. The shy little girly
thing became an act in S3, really annoying. I like the more
mature look.
> Now for the story. There wasn't a whole lot of it.
Yes, why even bother with the story? Wasn't this about Buffy
whining about how lost she was? Ten minutes of `real' story was
a bit distracting.

I really liked her! Reminded me a bit of Darla, and I was really
hoping we would be seeing a lot of her. Didn't care much for her
companions though. What were those, college dropouts? But it was
really disappointing to see someone with spunk being disposed of
this easily by that Sunnydale cry-Buffy.
> The end of the episode seemed to point out that the Scooby

Yes, annoying, wasn't it? (How many times did I use that word so
far?) I was really hoping the series would grow up with this
transition out of high school.

To be fair, the first ep of Angel was lots of action but no
contents, the second ep was drowned in contents, but then it
picked up. Angel looks really promising. I'm a bit sceptic about
Buffy. Just wait, and see.

Yup, there is one. Actually I promise I'll post it weekly over and over again,
but then I never do. Guess I'm just waaay too lazy. It'll probably be up on
http://www.start.at/theslayer soonish. (Where You can read my very own Buffy
column as well by the by, if you don't mind me shamelessly pluging myself
;-)). If you'd like I could dig up the latest version and post it here....
Indeed. I saw the whole of season 3 on downloads at the uni last year before
they aired. It had been a *really* long time since I saw a buffy ep I hadn't
seen before. Although I did read the first 15 minutes or so in transcipt form.
Next week I'll be completly unspoiled. Definatly looking forward to that ;-)

At first, I'm ashamed to say, I caught myself thinking "Hmm this new hangout
looks a lot like the bronze" , which soon went to "Hmm.....wait a
minute....maybe this is the bronze" to "Yes definatly the bronze". Couldn't
understand why I didn't notice it in the first place. Probably because I was
expecting another new set (those set designers probably really enjoyed
themselves..). Anyways after I saw it was the bronze I immedialtly expected
Xander to show, which he did :-)

Ooh a buffy-thon. Now there's an idea for a fun evening. Get some fans, pop in
some Buffy and watch a whole season :-)

I noticed that as well. But later I didn't really notice it anymore....ah well
perhaps it was an optical illusion or something...

Yes. It did blow me away to see giles with a woman friend.....so I can totaly
get where Buffy was coming from ;-) Wasn't a bad looking lady either if you
ask me....
> Xander was great, the whole scene. Once of his best moments, IMHO. A new

Yeah, that one caught me of guard. I would've expected the line to be the
other way around. Not sure if it was a moment of out-of-character-ness or
simply a hint in the direction that Xander isn't as dumb as he's sometimes
portrayed....

Yeah, you would expect Xander to quote that one without thinking. Did anyone
get the scentence he threw at us after that? Must've been another movie quote,
but I couldn't place it...
> Even the Hugging scene with Kathy was good...on that

Yeah. I suppose we'll get more about her next ep (judging by the title "living
conditions"). This girl seemed to come straight from Felicity (also a great
show by the way...anyone watch that?).

Yeah, one of the best lines in the ep actually :-) But I really liked
her....despised her sidekicks though (especially that surfer vamp. He made me
cringe more than once..)

Indeed. That was weird.....not sure why that was. I'm guessing Buffy's
pschychological confusion made her weaker, physcically. Not the best
explantion, but all I could think of....

Yeah. I was a bit surprised when it wasn't broken either. Maybe it was just
"uit de kom" (what's that in english?) but I don't think that would make the
same snap. Would it?

Yeah, reminded me a bit of Xander in the Zeppo. That's why it was nice that he
was the one giving her advise about that....

suckes that angel and Buffy aren't in synch....ah well....

Yeah, he's definatly gonna show in ep 3, "The harsh light of day", which I
think is gonna be pretty cool (with one funny line by xander that really had
me laughing when I read the transcript before angel ep 3)

Erm. Of course they're gonna have to introduce the new environments to us.
And I enjoyed seeing the surroundings the new eps will be played out in.
Don't think they should've done that any differently...although as a whole
it doesn't make for a brilliant ep....

Yes. The american education system allways seems to be fairly weird to me.
I don't believe there's any other country that has a similar system. I
think they have it a bit easier there. Also the level of education isn't
consistant with ours. Because of the schools that are all on the same
level, people who go into college are behind their european counterparts.
I once saw a chemistry raport by a second year med major (from america of
course) that I wouldn't have dared to turn in in high school. And she got
a B for it (which I think is roughly equal to about a 7-8, right?). That
gave me the impression (perhaps wrongfully so) that they are seriously
behind when entering college. Yet, somehow they make up for it in between
the first and last year because graduated american profesionals are every
bit as good as their european counterparts....ah well I guess I'll never
fully understand the american way ;-)

Hmm. I like all her looks, hell I like all of her ;-) But seriously, I did
think it was time she grew up a bit. Doesn't mean I didn't like her in
s3.....

Yeah, they were annoying. Almost reminded me of the annoyingly
uninteresting vamps in the original Buffy movie....

Erm no, I uactually liked that. It was again, very cliché but it didn't
bother me. I liked it. It made me have that feeling of seeing old friends
again. Ah well, I guess it's lost on you, since you allways seem to
dislike most of the scooby gang ;-)> All in all a fun introductory

Allready liked this one ep of Buffy more than the angel eps I've seen so
far. Just a matter of personal taste I guess...

Indeed. But 22 eps....22 times 45 minutes. Thats 16.5 hours of Buffy. I think I
could actually survive that ;-)

Do it good, pick a day, and set up some projector type thingy to watch
a whole season theatre style ;-)
But, there's more to it then just an evening *g*

More like an optical delusion *g* No, but seriously, its prolly
because of a wide angle camera lens. they tend to give that effect
quite easely *g*
(i think it's best seen when Buffy is with Willow in the library. At
one point she stands in front of willow when the camera moves up.. The
effect is that buffy seems to be shorter..)

*lol* As in you didnt expect to see Giles with a woman? Well, saying
that.. we all know the issue with Willow later on in the season *g*
Anyway, not much to say about this season opener. Although when i 1st
saw it (i'm one of those who download eppies- hence me beeing up to
par with the USA) i was slightly dissapointed.
You would have thought that since the show is such a success, they
would pay more attention to some flaws.. (mirror thing, anyone?)
And more use of special f/x is always appreciated. (if done right,
ofcourse)
Overall, 7 out of 10.
Cheers,

Why? Why not just jump into the middle, and work your way back
whenever necessary?

Not a brilliant ep, my point. I think they might have put in a
bit more of an effort after the debacle of last season's finale.

That Scooby gang thing was nice at the beginning. I think it has
run its usefulness. Time for new developments. Twisted
relationships, not this kids play group thing. Especially Giles
turning up at the end the way he did was childish.

It was better than Lonely Hearts... thought that ep has the same
kind of whining in it. A hero is more interesting if she's
slightly human. Anything, biting her finger nails, bad hair, bad
temper. But this "I'm so lost, I can't handle it" is just
pathetic.

Thats the US for ya...Don't have to pick a major, need to fill certain
course requirements (unless you took some AP exams in high school to get
out of some of them..) Very basic stuff, really. Its the whole conticued
general education thing. In real life its more work than it looks like
though. Almost all my high school friends went to study over in the US,
and they did a lot more work than I did my first year...Mainly because
many more classes means more work. You can get through the system doing
precious little real work though, but it won't get you anywhere...THe US
is a great place for people who can't decide what they want to do..some
people have been known to change majors about 7 times before settling on
something.

Loving it, but I already said that, didn't I...? ;-)

Yes and no...At least all our favorite characters are still there..we
shall see how they deal.

Hmm..I still prefer Buffy to Angel, but I then I have it on good faith
from a buddy in Ireland that S4 is supposed to be good (as is Angel S1
for that matter..) Next weeks ep seems to be good, though (checked the
ratings for the first to eps on an ep guide web site...)

They said that about S3 too.

Oh, well then I guess then there's still hope (see my disappoited-by-S4-
so-far rant in nksf [I'm feeling a bit... torn between two groups here]).
I liked S3.

Just watched the video, so here's my comment.
Much is said about this episode already so i don't have to repeat that .
Just two things that i didn't read yet. One is that i found this episode
a bit too dark for me. I mean dark in colours. They did things that i
coundn't see so well. Then i had to guess a bit what happenend. Maybe i
could blame the cable company, my video or my tv-colours-settings for
that. Maybe not...
The other thing was the part where that guy that remembered Willow's
name and not Buffy's. That was Funny. Normally Willow whould be the one
that wouldn't be noticed... It's like turning the world upside down.
General opinion: average epiosde (not bad, not good)

It was Net5 that did this, because I also noticed the dark colors. I've seen the
ep before and It shouldn't be that dark.

Yes funny, but I think he'll remember her name in the future.....

Thanx for clearing that up. I thought that i was the only one with that
problem since no one else mentioned it.
Stonehouse.
I thought i saw a pussycat
Showing how our freshmen experience their first moments at college is far
from cliché. It's a completely different world for them, and this can (and
has) make a big impact.

Wow a lot! She's looking better each season. *LOVE* the new hair! And has
she grown a few inches? Why didn't Willow come to study at *my* uni???
She really felt in place at the campus, very much unlike Buffy. She's like a
fish in the water. College is a major boost for her self confidence. No more
wallflower-Willow like in highschool. Guess I'm gonna miss that part of
her...
<SNIP>
>but sunday was a cool vamp.
She certainly was. Big shame she had to die so soon!
<SNIP>
> All in all a fun introductory episode, nothing more nothing less,
I think it was a great opener. You could see Buffy having great trouble
adapting to the college life. I guess she was still stuck in her
highschool-slayer role, and didn't prepare at all for college. She just
thought that it was gonna be 'more of the same'. And then she got terribly
lost in this big new world, feeling completely alienated, reality hit her
hard. Willow OTOH was really looking forward to it all (ever since
kindergarten I guess). This is *her* territory (well, except maybe for the
fraternities). She really came to life here. She made a big jump forward,
where Buffy was strolling along at the same pace. I liked how they showed
this contrast. And they did a great job showing how Buffy failed to adapt to
this new environment, whereas Willow just blended in naturally.

S3 had great episodes. But as a whole it was a bit of a
disappointment. It didn't like this stardom feeling about it. S2
was much better, more down-to-earth.
