oh well I might as well start, thought it was pretty good but in no way good
enough to be the first episode in 5 weeks. I thought Mercades really showed
her tallent and played a wide range of emotions and things really well. I
find it unlikely she'd have got all three in the cupboard before one of the
mystical things in the place detected her.
Some of the story was fairly obvious. the spiking of the flash and the guy
in her bed being dead but it was quite obvious that it would all have come
out in the end....and spike coming back was quite obviouis too.
But saying all that it still worked.
I enjoyed it. Would have been much better in the middle of a bunch of
episodes rather than the first episode after 5 weeks and a major cliffhanger
In discussion on the American group, a lot of people have mentioned a
scene with an instructional video, and a reference to Weyland-Yutani
(the company from the Alien films). But I'm confused -- my download
didn't have this scene.
My download is the 330Mb Xvid encode from a HDTV broadcast (far far
far better than VCD mpgs). My download is 41:08 in length. It doesn't
*seem* to miss anything around ad breaks, and the episode starts with
Harmony's alarm clock going off.
So is there something missing from my download?
Gavin Clayton
yeah
mine runs 43:18 and is the BT VCD version.
have you seen Being John Malcovich? well you know the video he watched to
explain the history of the half floor thingy....well it's basically that
kind of thing and is basically just in there instead of the "previously on
Angel" segment....just before harm's alarm goes off...
Shot like a commercial with a cheesy american voice over it is quite
comical.
I could rip it from this file and put it on the newsgroup or some webspace

Bleah, is my reaction. Total bleah. And a bit of Meh.
Except for the hilarious opening "recruitment" video, the Fred /
Harmony Girl's Night Out, and the Spike bit at the end, this was a
complete waste of my time! Very, very predictable, barely amusing,
and just not very interesting.
It doesn't help that I have no real liking for, or empathy with,
Harmony. Even if she weren't evil, I still wouldn't like her. :-)
My vote is 3.4, for future reference :-)

I like harmony...but then she is very 'buffy' which I am always more of a
fan of than Angel
>mine runs 43:18 and is the BT VCD version.
Okay. Thanks.
You see, I've become very elitist about which downloads I get. I used
to be happy with the 430Mb mpgs. But now I find that the 430Mb mpgs
are bog-standard, and I love an encoder who makes high-quality Xvids
capped from HDTV broadcast. Since it's Xvid, these versions come in at
330Mb, but they are far higher quality than the mpgs! The only damn
trouble is they always cut off the end credits and next week's
trailer... and now it seems they cut the beginning of the episode too
:-(

That would be great. It would save me having to download the entire
430Mb version just to see the beginning. I'm not sure how you could
get it to me though.
Gavin Clayton
I'll see your bleah and Meh and raise you a Bluh.

Ok that was very funny.

I was sooooo disappointed. After all this time waiting, waiting, more
waiting and even more waiting, still not wanting to get over that
surprise. Dying to find out how things with Eve and Lindsey (mmmmmm
Lindsey!) will pan out. And then this. Nothing!

Ah well I *do* like Harm, but too much Harm is not good for us. Oh yeah
and then came this wonderful announcement of Spike's leaving. Of course I
knew it wouldn't last long but I couldn't help cheering. I'm getting a bit
tired of Spike... especially when he's taking away screentime from Wesley.
> My vote is 3.4, for future reference :-)
Guess mine will be three-ish too yeah.

I haven't been the same since that house fell on my sister.
yeah I try to always get the hdtv broadcasts but I really wanted to see this
yesterday afternoon and so ended up downloading the vcd version coz the hdtv
one hadn't been posted to a newsgroup yet

sorry mate, ran out of hard drive space last night (again) and had to delete
it.. I've got about 20 gigs of x-files svcd and divx5 episodes from seaosn
3 and 4 that I havn't had time to watch yet....
deleted season 8 the other night coz i only had about half of it and no time
to watch it...

Yep. Okay, it was obviously more of a standalone comedy episode, but
very frustrating when the arc was heating up. My scores for this
season show it getting gradually better and better, peaking with last
episode. Then came this.... well, let's call it a blip!

I'm not sure this is a completely fair and objective assessment. :-)
Spike's had a couple of big episodes (one of which was also a big
Angel episode) but only a token role in most of the others this year.
Wes has had his share of the limelight, so it all balances out.
Harmony, however, spent this entire episode taking away screen time
from any number of worthwhile characters! <g>

Yep. That pretty much sums it up. Not worth it. At all. Ranging, at
best, from mildly amusing to me wanting to kill Harm for being
frustratingly stupidly annoyingly DULL.
Mattia
Exectly. My attention was wandering halfway through. I haven't felt
this little interest in a TV episode since the last Enterprise I
watched. :-)

Yep - I was a bit bored too. Not a bad episode, but obviously the complete
and utter lack of arc development after such a long wait was a huge
disapointment.
It occurred to me that this episode shows how far the Buffyverse has come.
People complained that Buffy never kills vampires anymore, but here not only
are vampires not seen as a big threat, a vampire murdering someone is played
for laughs. Not that I have a problem with that, I just think it's
interesting. Spike had a chip, Angel has a soul, what makes Harmony turn
from just being an evil blood sucking fiend?
Dave
Yes, I thought that. It was fairly obvious that she didn't actually
murder the guy (and in fact I found the plotline predictable long
before that point!) but it was played as if she had at first.
Then again, Harmony's always been played for laughs, even when trying
to murder the Scoobies on Buffy.

I think, the overwhelming desire to "fit in". Selfishness, basically.

I thought it was fairly good, actually. Storyteller without the theme
maybe, but it was still fun and mostly likable. It gave us a different
angle on events, which I'm always in favour of.

I think I heard somewhere that part of the reason they did this was to
confuse the spoiler community so they wouldn't realise Lindsey was
coming back this soon - whether that's true or not, I'm not sure.

It's not like Wesley had much screen time in the second half of S4
either really though, is it?

Probably low four something. An inoffensive simple filler episode,
fitting well into the theme of the season - which actually come to think
of it normally does seem to be the type people object to (stuff like
Provider (although that actually was terrible...), Life Serial or Him).
Didn't annoy me anywhere as much as some of the end of S4 did, anyway.

>I thought it was fairly good, actually. Storyteller without the theme

Storyteller wins out for me in that it was actually funny. <g> Also,
instead of all this triviality which is about Harmony and nothing
else, Storyteller illuminated some hidden truths about the other
characters. And above all, the theme is what *makes* Storyteller.
The way the theme of storytelling is turned around at the end to
create some dark drama and a real sense of change and revelation.
Here, we get no sense of learning or forward momentum, or even much in
the way of new information.

True.

Hmmmm, not quite sure how that works?
Either way, I don't automatically resent standalones, as long as
they're good, and I don't normally mind a story arc unfolding at its
own pace. It's more the crapness than the standaloneness that I
didn't like. :-)
Nonetheless, this season has really needed the weight of some arc and
momentum to counteract all the fluff. Just as we were getting it, it
was snatched away again - slightly too soon for my taste. Doing a
light comedy episode right this second just adds to the slightly
"bitty" feeling. I think they should have waited another episode or
two to allow the arc to really take hold.

Same goes for those two.

All true, and I'm not denying Storyteller isn't by far the better episode,
I just didn't really hate this one.

Basically, it was going to leak out that CK was coming back to the show
sooner or later, but they could tag a small scene of his return onto the
end of Destiny easily (I don't think it was included in the Shooting
Script) without it being anywhere near as leak-able. Thus, throw the
spoiler people a bit, anyway.

Fair enough.

But this was always going to be more of a stand alone season. I don't think
this hurts the momentum anywhere near as much as say Players did last year.

Easiest way if you just want to watch it standalone would be to get the
first file of the five for 5x09 from TheEpisodeWithBuffyDownloads.
If you're not getting the whole thing anyway then you'll get to see it,
quality a little poor but still.
