Just saw, for the third time, the first episode of S2. What an
excellent episode. It sets the mood for S2: strong drama, with
honest character portrayal. What a contrast compared to S3,
when Buffy became a show about TV heroes.

I totally agree with you, S2 was far better than S3.
I'd been waiting for "Anne" for so long, I was very disappointed when I
finally saw it.
Where did the great atmosphere of S2 go? I hope it will be back soon...

Yes it is a very good ep. It shows Buffy to be just a human being and not
(just) a superhero. She has fears and frustrations and like us mere
mortals she takes it out on those closest to her.
Also good acting by the other characters. Giles (always, every scene he is
in), Cordelia (in the alley, giving a speech to B.)
and even Xander. I like Xander the most when he is not joking but when he
really has something to say. For instance in this ep in the library when
he is hurt and Buffy walks in. ("If they hurt Willow, I'll kill you").
And also in "Dead man's party", the talk in the livingroom just before you
know what comes in.

There are some good fight scenes as well, which is a must in every good BtVS
ep (I think).

And finally humor. "Vampire, is that an offensive term ? Should I say
undead American ?" Very funny stuff.

So is S2 better than S3 ? I don't think so, let's say it is different.
The main difference to me is that S3 main season storyline is much more
prominent. In S3 you can't watch an ep and than skip a few. You won't
understand half of what is going on. In S2 you can skip one or two or even
watch some in the wrong order. (You might not understand some things but
it is not that big a deal as in S3). I liked both S2 and S3. Although
now that I am really comparing I might be persuaded to let S2 win on points,
but it's definitely not a knock-out. It's a judgement call.

Definately a very good opener, though I haven't really had time to
watch it this time around. The best moments that I did see, however,
are the prologue, the Buffy training sequence, her confrontation with
Angel and the epilogue. The entire episode also made a lot more sense
with all the scenes present (SBS6 cut entire scenes, like the
conversation between Hank and Joyce and Buffy's training sequence).

As far as the atmosphere of S2 goes, this episode sets the tone. And
though I haven't seen anything from S4, my American contact says that,
so far, it's much better than S3 and that approximately the first ten
episodes of Angel are very much worth watching.
