realized just NOW MUCH she has grown in 2+ years on the show.

While I agree that Michelle has certainly grown, pictures do lie. If you go
back to season 1, it often appears as if Sarah is as tall or taller then
Alyson. Alyson was already in her 20's so I doubt she's grown any since
then. They often put Sarah in high-heeled shoes and boots on the show to
make her look taller while Alyson wore flat shoes. They don't seem to
bother doing that so much anymore.
On a similar note, people who used to talk about Amber Benson being fat
never seemed to get that the camera lies either. SMG and even Alyson are
really tiny though Alyson seems to be filling out more while Sarah wastes
away. Standing next to them, almost anyone would look huge on camera. I'll
never forget the shot at the end of Hush where Riley and Buffy are sitting
opposite one another on the twin beds. They showed a full screen shot
rather then use angles to mask the size difference. Sarah looked like a
little kid across from him. Other's noticed the scene in The Body where
Sarah is sitting next to Amber.

Michelle Trachtenberg was just 10 years old when the first season of Buffy
the Vampire Slayer was filmed so she certainly has grown up the most in the
cast.
But you're quite right that they did use camera angles and heels to make
SMG look taller on occasion and more her actual size in other cases.
By Season 6 Michelle Trachtenberg was taller than SMG, but the way the show
was shot you would think that Buffy was still a little taller than Dawn
with one or two exceptions. By Season 7 they gave in to reality and even
joked about Dawn being taller than Buffy.
At the Emmies seminar on Buffy Michelle Trachtenberg said Joss had said in
front of witnesses that she could wear black slacks and heels on the show
in Season 7 and Joss acknowledged that he did make that promise which
apparently made Michelle rather happy. Alyson Hannigan quipped "Why would
you want heels? You're already the tallest girl in the cast!"
And the proper expression for Dawn's lovelyness in "Storyteller" is "Gosh -
look at those" as quoted by Willow dressed as VampWillow.

Part of the extreme difference is that they stopped working so hard to
de-emphasize the height difference. Even in BvsD and The Real Me, MT
was probably already taller than SMG, but they spent most of that
season framing shots to diguise it. It got even worse in the first
half of season six, because by then MT was not only taller than SMG
but every other female actor on the show. Entropy, the ep the second
screen cap is from, is the first time they acknowledged that Dawn is
taller (a lot taller) than Buffy. From that point it has become a
joke topic for the show, but they still demphasize Dawn's height in
scenes with Buffy (despite MT's pleading, Dawn still doesn't get to
wear heels very often).

This has always been a bit puzzling.
Part of the mythos of Buffy is that she is the opposite of traditional
heroes/heroines. She was at her most fluffy or feminine just before/after
beating the stuffing out of some monster. Her being small should have been
an integral part of that ethos. Perhaps SMG just didn't like it?
