First of all i loved the opening sequence. I didn't know Darla so i took
me completely by surprise !
The introduction of all the characters seemed a little bit forced
sometimes, but that was to be expected. Xander and Cordelia come across
pretty easily in one or two scenes, but Willow's charioteer is a bit
more complex. Willow confessing her shyness around boys to someone she
just met was a bit to much to soon, but overall i think Willow was
captured pretty good in just one episode. Alyson's great acting helped a
lot ( i confess i might be a bit biased here, but what can i say, i just
*love* Alyson ).
All the Buffy/Giles interaction was clearly meant to introduce the
overall theme off the serie and to explain thing for those how didn't
seee the movie. Why would Giles need to explain to Buffy the concept of
the Slayer ? Or why would Buffy need to tell Giles how vamps are made ?
Angels introduction was fantastic !! I was sitting on the edge of my
seat during the whole scene ( figurative speaking, cos i wasn't sitting
).
There was just one thing i wondered about which has nothing to do with
the rest of the ep. How did Angel get the cross for Buffy ? I can't
really see him go into a shop and point it out. Did he order it from a
catalogue or sellTV or something ? That leads to the question, does it
hurt a vampire to see a cross on TV or in a magazine, or only an actual
cross ? and how about a tattoo of a cross ?
Back to the ep: Buffy must be seriously out of practice or else she
would have kicked Luke's ass easily. Why doesn't see get up immediatly
after luke throws here into the grave-thing ?She just lies there when
you know Luke's gonna jump right in after her.
The low budget was pretty obvious sometimes in the make up, the puncture
wounds on the dead boy's neck were so fake / special effects, like the
rising of the Master / some fight scenes.
On a whole i think it was a very good first episode, especially Darla
and Angel ( and Willow )
Now on a somewhat different note :
this may make no sense at all, but does anyone else feel that Joss is
making some kind of connection between the Master and nazi Germany ?
According to the Watcher's guide the Master has some long german name,
and he's wearing that leathery nazi type uniform.
Just a thought.

*grin* Darla's cool.

Well, yes, they're *so* obviously "Hi, I'm Mr. Exposition Guy!"
moments, but within the Buffyverse (as opposed to the Buffy show)
there's no need for exposition, so I explain them away thusly:
1) Either Giles isn't sure / doesn't know whether Buffy has had a Watcher
(or, if not a watcher, someone who can do the whole "One girl in all
the world" spiel) before-- so that if she hasn't, she might not *know*
that she's the only one who has those powers-- or he's just doing that
to try to remind Buffy that she *is* the only one, that's she's
responsible for saving the world, etc.
2) Possibly Giles hadn't seen the body, thus was not able to see any
signs (or lack thereof) of vampire sirage. Equally possibly (or both
could be true), he was doing it to test Buffy's knowledge and to point
out "*You* know these things, you can stop the vampires, no one else
can"
: catalogue or sellTV or something ? That leads to the question, does it
: hurt a vampire to see a cross on TV or in a magazine, or only an actual
: cross ? and how about a tattoo of a cross ?
I don't think *seeing* a cross does much for a vamp-- it's proximity,
and touching, not seeing. They flinch back out of habit and in the
same way that if someone shoves fire in my face, I'm going to flinch
back, even though it's touching and not seeing the fire that would
hurt me. Now, whether touching a picture of a cross does anything, is
another question...

*snicker* You should see the *unaired* pilot. Talk about low
budget... :)

: According to the Watcher's guide the Master has some long german name,
[Josef Heinrich Nest, I think, but that's totally off the top of my
head. Or maybe it's HJN, not JHN. Dunno. Something like that.]
: and he's wearing that leathery nazi type uniform.
I hadn't thought of any Nazi/Master parallels. Leather does not a
Nazi make, nor are all Germans Nazi. Nor, for that matter, are all
evil controlling German guys Nazis. *grin* I think, without the
subvampires clicking their heels and saluting and going "Heil Master!"
or whatever, it's not *that* big a parallel to the Nazis. Unless you
want to count the whole "We are so much better than those weakling
humans" attitude that most vamps have as being parallel to the Aryan
race stuff.

Why this spoiler space?
You hadn't seen her in Becoming 1?

The low budget has its plus sides. The graveyard scene was
actually done on a real graveyard, I think. And it looks much
better than the fake ones in later seasons.

I don't see the link.

-- Darla, Welcome to the Hellmouth
To be honest I expected this ep to be a dissapointment because normaly when
you have seen later episodes of a series the earlier ones look dated. Also
it's hard to ignore what you know will happen later on. But fortunately I
was wrong. I really enjoyed myself.
>First of all i loved the opening sequence. I didn't know Darla so i took

Me too. Like I was suppost to, I expected the boy to be the vampire. (And
that after so many years of tv and film experiance. Shame on me
)

Well, let's just say that Willow was a bit impressed or even intimidated
that a girl like Buffy would talk to her. Without thinking about it too
long she opened up to her. I can see that happen.

Agree.

Were you standing on your hands or something ? :->
There was some minor thing that didn't make sense. Angel said something
like : "I thought you would be bigger. With more muscles". (Or
something along those lines). But everybody who has seen "Becoming" knows
that Angel already had seen Buffy even before she met her first watcher.
So he knows very well what she looks like. ( O God, is that a spoiler ?
I don't think so but if someone consideres it to be one, I apologize).

I thought it was quite realistic. She had some experiance with vampire
slaying but she is young and still learning. She will get stronger in
time. If Luke doesn't kill her. She was in deep shit when the ep ended.
I wonder how this will turn out. Maybe he will kill her and
...............okay, okay I know, a very lame attempt to be funny.
A scene I thought was very funny was when principal Fluty tore up Buffy's
file only to tape it back together immediately after. It gave us some
idea about the seriousness of the trouble she got herself into on her last
school. Were my eyes deceiving me or did he put the pieces together
incorrectly ?
I also liked the slapstick-like scene when Xander crashed into the metal
thing (Dutch : leuning) on his scateboard. Simple but funny.
I can say that I am looking forward to "The Harvest". Wouldn't it be great
if they would air two-parters on the same day. I hate waiting a whole
week.
