I was at the ABC this afternoon (hoping to buy George RR Martin's 3rd
book no such luck though..) and I noticed a big fat, watcher's guide
like (same typ of over, typset, page layout s far as I could tell) with
descriptions o all the Monsters in Buffy's first 4 seasons (so don' go
picking up the book unless you want to be spoiled!) Looked quite nice,
thick book, lotsa details and some background on each monster...

On another note, I saw a magazin (Shiver, I believe it was) with AH on
the cover. Sorta pointless interview about Willow as a character, etc.
not too eciting, but nice pictures (and a 2 page mini-pster)

Aaaaaand George returns from a very busy thursday to find a heap of new
messages. Guess we're in the First stages of the Flood of Valente [tm] now.
I'll try to see If I can reply to any of those messages ;-)

Yep. The Monster Book. I own that puppy ;-)

But seriously, it's a great book. Not a lot of new things in there,
although it *is* nice to see how Joss views the mythology of the show. The
background information can come in handy while discussing old eps, but
that's where the usefulness of this book ends. If you, like me, want every
single Buffy companion volumne get it now. If you loved the watchers guide
(and who didn't?) you'll like this one. All in all perhaps a bit too
expensive, but it'll keep you busy while waiting for the watchers guide
pt2......

Ooh. Haven't seen that one around. Don't think my newsagent has Shiver (I
get dreamwatch and SFX, but thats mostly it for SF mags).....

See Ya,
George

The only nice bit of news there was that they've started filming S5 by
now (which is kinda, well, self evident, but ok ;-)

I picked up the August issue of SFX while I was over in the UK
(Alyson on cover, couldn't resist, though I really think she
should let her hair grow back a bit, but anyway, I digress) which
apart from an interview with Miss Hannigan also contained one
with the now ex stunt people Jeff Pruitt and Sophia Crawford
(Buffy stunt double). Now we knew they were leaving, and we've
heard about composer Christophe Beck leaving, but in this
interview Jeff and Sohpia said that in fact "eighty per cent of
the crew aren't going back" for season 5. Sounds pretty drastic.
I guess S5 could indeed prove to be radically different, then.
Let's hope it's for the better.

Hmmm.....kinda spooky thought, really...but hey, JW is there, all the
regulars are there, so it whould still be good. And it'll still be
Buffy, anyhow. Pruitt raised some big huff about him being fired (or
something) didn't he? Some slightly bizzare parable he wrote or somesuch
(came off rather pompous and more than a little silly, IMHO.) Didn't
Chris Beck only score S3 and half of S2 (from Passion) or am I wrong?
Admittedly, S1 music is pretty terrible compared to CB stuff, but still.
The musical landscape for the show has been pretty much set now, and I
can only hope that they find someone who can step into CB footsteps (who
did they get now, anyway? Any word on that?)

Anyway, I've got good hopes for S5 (and the rest of S4 for that
matter..) We'll have to wait and see, I guess.

Depends. If the DVD's are released soon, DVD's quite obviously take
precedence. My next big ticket item will probably be a DVD player though
(the guitar Amp will just have to wait till christmas, or till I get a
job or something..) Having the eps in high quality is more important
than having a book about the monsters in the eps, IMNSHO.

The one in Amsterdam (I live here, so the choice is obvious ;-) Didn't
check the price on it, though George could probably give you that.
Remeber the 10% discount students get though..big bonus there. The ABC
in Amsterdam has lots of Buffy books, from novels to a number of
seperate guides, even comics and such. And some Angel stuff as well.
They're even seeling official gloosy 8"x10" photographs, and a whole
selection of official iron-on thingys...

That's basically correct, though you're forgetting the small
matter of season 4. So he did seasons 3 and 4 in their entirety,
and just over half of S2. "From Passion" is incorrect, the nine
S2 eps he *didn't* score are:

5V03 School Hard 5V12 Bad Eggs
5V05 Reptile Boy 5V15 Phases
5V07 Lie to Me 5V18 Killed by Death
5V09 What's My Line? Part I 5V20 Go Fish
5V10 What's My Line? Part II

These were done by the duo Shawn Clement and Sean Murray, while
season 1 was done S1 Walter Murphy.

> Admittedly, S1 music is pretty terrible compared to CB stuff,
> but still.

Yep, it doesn't quite have the same spark to it. Don't know about
terrible, but it certainly sounds mediocre in comparison. No
offence to Mr. Murphy, of course.

Nope, at least I haven't seen anything on that yet. I'd be
interested to know. TWW (I think) reported that on the Angel side
of things, Robert J. Kral is staying on for S2, but had not been
approached to take on "the parent show" aswell, nor would he be
particularly interested in doing so. (Pity, 'cause he would have
been good enough for me, very similar style to Beck, who worked
together with him and basically mentored him into the job during
A-S1, I believe.) Now why can't I find this on TWW anymore? Did I
dream it up? I can't have been that long ago.

Yep, I'm sure all will turn out well. Ask me how I know. [rest of
group in chorus: "How do you..."] I just know.

P.S.: Gees, guys, I can't even leave the group alone for 8 hours
these days without having a shitload of (well, 40) unread
messages. Anyway, the reason I was late is due to some
unscheduled slayage, as in an unscheduled Buffyfest of sorts,
that is. A friend arrived over and we ended up watching
"Invisible Girl" and "Welcome to the Hellmouth" / "The Harvest",
which was over just in time to finish off with "Doppelgãngland"
live on BBC TWO. Oh yeah, had I mentioned that? That a while ago
I discovered BBC recordings of the entire first season in my
collection, which I didn't even know I had and the post-"The
Witch" part of which I'd never even watched? Guess I just forgot
to stop taping the show when I decided to stop watching it after
those first few eps, back in Jan '99. Can't say I'm mad at myself
now, though. Anyhow, I think I've basically converted this friend
from a casual viewer to a pretty darn enthusiastic Watcher. Not
bad for a night's work. My first IRL Siring. Yay me. Can't
believe how easy is was, actually, nothing like those
non-responsive friends of Mattia's. Well, this PS is overrunning,
so I'm gonna hit the sack now. Damn, I think I had to go
somewhere tomorrow...

Yep. I bought mine at the abc in amsterdam (I was in the one in Den Haag as
well recently, and they *used* to have Buffy books IIRC, but now they're
indeed completly absent....ah well my OV will soon cover the costs of the
longer trip to A'dam again). The Monster Book's fl50,- there (it's fl45,-
with student discount), but you might want to check out proxis.nl where it's
much cheaper, you don't need a credit card (accept giro) and there's no
shipping costs......plus you get a fl10,- dicount first time you order,
which makes the monter book faily cheap there (I now regret buying it in the
abc)........

Yep, they're fairly complete :-)

Yeah, those were a nice addition. They need a bit more merchandise
though.......

Of course, if you're not a student, becomming a member of DBAF will also
ensure you the discount........

YIKES!!!! Thats really expensive! Maybe I'll wait and see If I can get
it cheaper somewhere..

Heck, try Amzon.co.uk for example (if you have a credit card. Only 10
pounds (about, what 30, 35 guilders or so?) So you have to pay some s&h
costs, but still...That's one big scary pricetag, I must say. It is a
big book, but 105??? You can get the complete LotR unabridged 9 CD
audioplay for that price.....

ABC is usually pretty good on pricing (on normal books, at least.)
though. Competitive pricing in most cases..Never heard of Proxis before,
going to take a look now..

Hmm...I'd say they have a pretty fair amount for a bookstore (its not a
games store, remember that, at least) Don't really see them selling
T-shirts anytime soon (although Posters would fit well with the rest of
the stuff they're selling, methinks..)

I think he wrote FL 50,- not 150.
a 1 and an l are easily mixed up.

Yep. No T-shirts, but some small glasses, posters, mugs etc. would be nice. Stuff
that fits in a "virtrine kast" (excuse my dutch)

Phew...had me a little scared for a moment. And confused as
well....That's sort of reasonable, at least. 150 would have been plain
ridiculous, IMHO.

Well, yes, posters would be good, and I thought they had a mug (could've
been seeing things though..) last time I checked. Hmm...lets put that in
their little suggestion box thingy, shall we?

PS: Question for Jonathan (don't feel like starting another thread for
this):

By how much do you have to slow down sound clips from a PAL recording of
buffy to get them in true pitch (compensate for the speeding up that
occurs..) Percentage is? And you use CE 2000 right? How exactly (have
the prog, never look at it. Use Cakewalk and Cubasis atm...)

Of course, S4 as well...stupid of me to forget that one..<kicks himself

I dunno..I just found it really cheese-like in comparison. Not the
theatrical orchestral type score that CB manages to create for the drama
moments. Somehow very...lacking. No offence to Murph, of course, but it
doesn't really mesh as well as the CB stuff. Had to describe, really (I
had that very distinct feeling after watching NKABOTFD right after
having watched a couple of CB scored eps.)

Hmmm...a fertile fantasy, perhaps? Seriously thogh, I thought I read
that too. In some interview with CB, I hought the same one where his
reasons for leaving were outlined. Can't remember the details though.
One thing I do hope is that the next composer will (be allowed?) to use
the themes CB has created in the nw stuff (where applicable. Who owns
the rights to his music? Him or the show?)

Ooh, they have that? Never noticed it before.....
But yes, lets :-)

Well I can't atm (sorry!). My fellow "bestuursleden" still have to
officially aprove the letter to the upcomming members (with all the
info in it) that I wrote. I assume they will, but 'till that happens I
really can't say anything. Trust me when I say I'll post everything
here sometime next week (when we're going to send out the letters.
Still not too late for you to join on www.btvsfanclub.com and get one
of those letters, mattia...)

OK, definitely agree that it's basically inferior, but I kinda
like it in a cheesy nostalgic sorta way nonetheless. I mean, I
wouldn't what them to go back and like get Chris Beck to re-score
S1 to create "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Special Edition" for the
DVD release or whatever. At least, I don't *think* I would.
Didn't they do something like this with the Babylon 5 pilot
episode "The Gathering"? Different composer from the rest of the
series, which was done by Christopher Franke and later they went
back and completely re-edited and re-scored the pilot episode.
I've never seen that, though.

[Chris Beck replacement]

That's a good point. Always nice when existing themes can used,
where appropriate. Like the way the original Star Trek TV theme
by Alexander Courage pops up from time to time in the later stuff
like TNG and the movies.

We've heard the Buffy/Angel Love Theme get used in IWRY. Don't
know if that says anything as to whether it could still be used
in S5 and beyond, 'cause Beck was of course still around then
working together with Kral and all.

Well, I think we discussed this on IRC last night, but I'll reply
anyway...

Well, the PAL recording is running at 25fps instead of the
original 24, so to cancel out that speed-up you want to play it
at 24/25ths = 96% of its current speed (and have the pitch come
down by the natural amount incurred by this slow-down).

> And you use CE 2000 right? How exactly (have the prog, never

To be honest it's a long time since I actually did this, but I
did use CoolEdit I think (not 2000). It had options to change the
speed and only counteract the natural pitch shift associated with
that speed change if you wanted to. I believe what you were
saying on IRC is that in the program you were using you could
only get it to change the speed (preserving the pitch) or change
the pitch (preserving the speed). Very noble of it, but
ironically, you actually want to change both in this case, to
counteract the natural pitch shift in the speeded-up PAL
recording.
