General Info:
Title: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Issue 11
Publisher: Dark Horse www.dhorse.com
Story: A boy named Sue
Writer: Andi Watson
Artist: Joe Bennett
Inker: Rick Ketcham
Colours: Guy Major
What has happened before: The vampire Selke who we first saw in issue two
has re-emerged and is fixated about being beautiful, but alas, being a
vampire it's not that easy. Joyce Summers gets an idea for plastic surgery.
Buffy is spotted by a modelling agency. When Buffy goes to the agency she is
met by other young models, who later turn out to be body eating demons, who
Buffy kills. Selke visits Joyce's plastic surgeon and forces the doctor to
turn her beautiful so he tricks her into thinking that mayonnaise is a
powerful new beautifying cream.
Issue 11 is part 4 of the 9 part Bad Blood series. The previous three have
been lame and this issue is no exeption. This is Bennett's last issue as
artist and he does a okay-ish job. That is until page three. Giles again
looks evil. Bennett for some strange reason makes Giles look angry and
disturbing, like he is a serial killer of some sort, waiting for the right
time to hack Buffy into pieces. This is the first issue to introduce a none
continuous cast member, Amy the Witch. Or what I think is Amy the Witch.
Bennett draws her so much like Buffy it is hard to tell who is who. If you
turn to page 12 (not counting adverts) try and figure out who is that blonde
knelling down. And blonde, yes that what I said. I'm sorry but isn't Amy's
hair in season three supposed to be dark brown/red. Amy is so hard to notice
on some places it is unbelievable. If Major had gone with her season three
hair instead of her season one/two hair it would of been more noticeable.
But why didn't he since the book is now set in season three. Also I have
never complained about the likeness but a man can change. If Bennett had
drawn Amy like or resembling Elizabeth Anne Allen then it would of been
easier to pick her out. Or maybe have SMG's little bent nose thing.
Vampires: Why does Bennett get it wrong? Since when in Buffy has the
vampires turned into man size bats? I do not recall this happening. Page 11
(no ads) a guy turns into a 6 ft bat. Who is supposed to be a vampire. Does
Joss approve of this? It makes you think if he actually does. His
interpretation of vampires is not big purple fury things with turnips for
noses and big Spock like ears. They are normal faces just with bumps, lines
and fangs. They are not green, they are not bats and they do not look like a
pissed off vegetable
Clothing: Is it me or has Xander worn the same outfit for all of the Bennett
issues? Grey (Xander, grey, I don't think so) shirt with a dark blue (dark?
I don't think so) t-shirt underneath. Xander is known for his Hawaiian
shirts, patterned, stripes, poka dots, what ever, it's just not one normal
colour, so why do we see him looking very much like a tramp? And Buffy is
supposed to be more hip is she not, especially with clothes. Again Buffy has
the same style of clothes in each issue. Buffy has a new outfit with every
episode. Why doesn't the comic?
The script: Okay. Watson does another good job, puns this month include
Buffy stab at Giles getting mad abut a book not turning up ''Hey take it
easy. There'll be other Goosebumps first editions'' which makes you groan
really loud. Watson is a good writer. Hopefully when Cliff Richards takes
over the book with issue 12, he'll get a good artist to tag along with his
impressive writing skills.
Final point. Last page. Bennett's final page. Good bye! Don't come back.
On next month's issue. Randy Green Cover. His third and looks so fricking
cool. Also the Angel team of Chris Golden, Christian Zanier and Andi Owens
are taking over the book for an issue. This will tell us if the book will be
a Spike and Dru or another Buffy ongoing.
