Anyways, since I referenced to movies (john woo, the matrix, some
trailers etc.) and since I'm a *huge* moviefan myself (although this
week I probably won't be going to the movies.....a first since months
*g*), I was wondering if liking the same show(s) makes our other tastes
in big screen greatness alike as well......so what I'm trying to say is
what are your favorite movies...let's say a top 10 or something....I'll
start below and let's see if anyone cares to post their opinions as well
(mattia I'm counting on you here...since you're allways bored :-)).
To start off I like SO many movies it's hard to think of my alltime top
ten, I'll just do some good ones that pop to mind. I have a fairly
mainstream taste, so sorry to all you art film lovers out there. I
despise all dutch movies I've seen so don't expect to see that in there
either. Furthermore I dont really like heavy on the gore horror flicks
so don't expect those in there.....
10) Being John Malkovitz:
Just so simply bizarre. Wonderfull.
9) Shakespeare in Love:
Yes, I know a choice you'd not really expect here from me, but a great
movie. Great acting by gwyneth paltrow. Great romance. Great story.
8) Space Balls:
I *love* spoofs. And this one is the best ever, period.
(quoting from memory here so excuse the mistakes):
"Lonestar, I am your fathers cousins nephews former roomate"
"So what does that make us?"
"Absolutly nothing, which is what you are about to become!"
7) Star Wars 4 to 6:
What can I say? Great moments in sf/fantasy movie making('cause star
wars really is fantasy imho, no matter what anyone else says ;-)). Great
stories. Classic moments. I can't see how these can be left out of
anyone's top ten list......
6) The rock/armageddon etc. :
I'm talking about those big budget Jerry bruckheimer produced action
movies here. I know they're not top of the bill in acting and story, but
hey I just love em to death. And the music is allways great (grand
scrores) which helpes set the mood....
5) The usual suspects:
Great film in itself, featuring one of my all time favorite actors
(kevin spacey) and the best twist ending ever (I did not see that coming
untill a minute up front). Greatness...
4) The Matrix:
Great story, mind blowing experience. A movie I like to watch over and
over and over just because it's so damn beautifull.....
3) Romeo and Juliet:
Even though everyone knows the story by heart, it just works in this new
setting. A movie that kept me thinking about it after I saw it for quite
some time. Great acting by Leo (who despite of his pretty boy, girl idol
image is a very good actor) and Claire (who I allready really liked in
"My so called Life")
2) JFK:
What can I say? One of the most involving 3 hours of film for everyone
interested in america and/or the death of JFK. Greatly directed and
greatly acted. One of the few long films that's truly involving.....
1) Contact:
Fabulous movie with Jodie foster. Not saying it's the best movie ever
made, just saying its my favorite. Great story and a character I could
completly identify with. The novel was written by a man (Carl Sagan)
with whom I share most views of the world and universe. The movie made
that idea more real, more realistic. Actually a movie that helped in my
decision to do astrophysics......greatness all around.....
So that's it for now. I'm sure I'll regret some choices later, think of
better choices later or even agree with other lists more...
Now it's your turn ;-)
See Ya,
George

I doubt whether this is the kind of group that would flourish
more from off-topic postings.
But movies, OK, in no particular order, and incomplete:
Akira
Alien 3 (1992)
Bladerunner
Candyman (1992)
Cat Peolple (1982, remake with Nastassia Kinski)
The Children's Hour (1961)
The Company of Wolves (1984)
The Crying Game (1992)
Hellraiser (1987)
Hellbound (1988)
Into the Night (1985)
Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence (1982)
My Own Private Idaho (1991)
Natural Born Killers
The Nightmare before Christmas
A Nightmare on Elmstreet
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Silent Tongue
Splendor in the Grass (1961)
Stargate
Star Man
Wes Craven's New Nightmare
I have a preference for Horror movies, the ones mentioned above
are just a selections (and the films I remember the title of).
And all movies from Sam Shephard, Hal Hartley, Tim Burton.

Hmmm, Gwynneth Paltrow. Sorry Aly, this is where I look at other women.
Seriously though, it was a good pic. Not exactly deserving all those Oscars,
but good nontheless

Great entertainment, esp the Rock. Armageddon had some wonderfull FX, and
Bruce Willis was great as usual, but the that whole bit in space was utter
rubbish from an astronomers point of view (four years of college leaving
it's mark here).

Are you trolling me?? :->
But seriously, I never would have considered this film as being in my top
10. I read the book ('t was good) and I enjoyed the film, but I wasn't very
impressed.
>
>So that's it for now. I'm sure I'll regret some choices later, think of

>Now it's your turn ;-)
Ok, let me try to think of some movies you didn't have in your list:
American History X
A very realistic view on the nowadays racists. Thought I was more than a bit
tired of that theme untill I saw this one.
Breaking the Waves
Perhaps not so well known, but this film has the best acting I ever saw.
Truly magnificent
Sixth Sense
Opinions differ on this one, but I was completely blindsided by this one and
I like it when that happens. Very good acting by Bruce and that kid.
Shawshank Redemption
Best prison-film ever made. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins on their best
Pulp Fiction
Say no more
Blade Runner
Classic SF. Very well shot. Man, that city is depressing! And yes, Hauer
really _can_ act. You wouldn't notice it watching Buffy the movie, but he
can!
American Beauty
I'm a great fan of Kevin Spacey, but the whole film is a joy to watch. I'm
glad it won all those oscars.
Togedher with The Matrix, The Usual Suspects, Se7en and Romeo + Juliet this
makes my top eh..11 for this moment: tomorrow I would probably substitute
half of these in favor of other ones.
So, who's next?
Sierk
- Dawn of the dead (Zombies, I love 'em)
- Die hard 1,2,3 (No story, just fun to watch)
- The naked gun, all three of them (Leslie Nielsen and that absurt humor.
Not always in the mood for it but once in a while)
- Dragnet and Spies like us and Ghostbusters (figure out the connection
yourself)
- Blues Brothers, both (Because of the music)
- Saving private Ryan (Pretty realistic, as far as possible)
- Braveheart (Great massive fightscenes, almost just as good as the one
in Graduation 2............Yeah, right)
- Alien (tension)
- Aliens (action)
- Alien Ressurection (Wynona Rhyder)
- Haunted (Nice castle, great feel, good effects)
- The craft (Witches)
- Interview with a vampire (Vampires rule)
- Dracula (The one with Wynona Rhyder)
- Notting hill (I was more or less forced to watch it and for some reason
I enjoyed it. This choice stands for all those "feel good" movies you have
to watch once in a while. Just sit down and smile).
There are hundreds more I can't think of now but I am sure I will remember
many of them later on.
There are many movies with great storylines I have enjoyed, but the ones I
watch for a second time (or more) are the ones with no story but great
effects or action.
I do like blood and gore in horror movies. Unfortunately there is an awful
lot of crap out there.
I love zombies, witches and vampires. Unfortunately again, most movies
about these subjects suck. (Like BtVS the movie).
Anyway, this is it for now. Who's next ?
Bye, Rob

So far, we have pretty similar tastes (and similar problems relating to
thinking of all the bet movies, forgtting some, bla bla bla....)

Must go see it very very soon (at the Pathe ArenA methinks, haven't been

recommend it heartily.

You're right, very unexpected. It is a great movie though, acting,
costume, atmosphere, and the romance side of it..very well written and
executed piece of work.
> 8) Space Balls:

ditto about quoting from memory..
"I see your Schwartz is just as Big as mine!!!"
"Merchandising! Where the money rom this movie is really made!"
"The schwartz? Naah, I found that in a crackerjack box!"
In the bar, with the 'Alien' spoof: "Not again!"
etc. etc. GREAT movie, one of the best spoofs of all time, IMHO....gotta
go find that videotape again..
> 7) Star Wars 4 to 6:
> What can I say? Great moments in sf/fantasy movie making('cause star

I guess...although you could say a whole lot of SciFi as fantasy
elements in it.
> stories. Classic moments. I can't see how these can be left out of
> anyone's top ten list......
Agree completely. THe acting, etc. isn't superb or eve particularly
good, but the storyline, the saga, all the cheesy dialogue ("I have a
bad feeling about this" said 10 times throughout the 3 movies...) more
than make up for it. Lets not forget the special effects, the universe
vreated, the creatures, and the very memorable villans and good guys.
Scarily, movies are still being made with worse spcial effects than were
present in the original films. And please lets not forget the Music!
In case you haven't figured it out, I'm a SW fan (don't collect stuff
though, stick with the movies, Zahn's trilogy ;-) Hec, watched all 3
special editions back to back in a Star Wars night at a movie thater in
Paris (THX certified, of course!)
> 6) The rock/armageddon etc. :
> I'm talking about those big budget Jerry bruckheimer produced action

Agree. Good fun to watch, don't look for much deeper meaning here,
sitback, relax, enjoy.
> 5) The usual suspects:
> Great film in itself, featuring one of my all time favorite actors
> (kevin spacey) and the best twist ending ever (I did not see that coming
> untill a minute up front). Greatness...
Yes indeed! Although I would put it closer to the top of my list..at
least at 3 (was at 1 for a while, my 'list' changes a lot.) Definately
one of my all time favorites, plot twists, confusion, great ensemble
cast, screenplay, etc. Kevin Spacey is also one of my favorte actors, an
American Beauty is another amazing movie (its momentarily my number 1
movie..)
> 4) The Matrix:
> Great story, mind blowing experience. A movie I like to watch over and
> over and over just because it's so damn beautifull.....
Mixed feelings about this one. It WAS a great movie, amazing special FX
(though I'm still unsure it should have gotten the Oscar for them...bit
of a toss up; Matrix stuff was more original, etc. but TPM was more
grand in scale, etc..) and a good story, but IMHO it could have been
done a little better (the fact that it all had to degenerate into one
big shootout, albeit a very entertainin and well done shootout, bothered
me. Didn't live up to the expectations I had of it...still watched it
twice at the cinema though ;-)
> 3) Romeo and Juliet:
> Even though everyone knows the story by heart, it just works in this new

Didn't like the movie all that much. It was OK, nothing special, seen
better. If you want a nice big discussion/argument about this, and Leo,
search deja for an exchange between me and doc in nksf+f on the
subject..(bottom line: hype bugged me about this movie, didn't help my
evaluation of it.) I like Claire Daines a good deal (hasn't been doing
much lately, goes to college at Yale. Friend that goes there has seen
her around..)
> 2) JFK:

I haven't seen it (tried watching t once years ago..was babysitting,
they had the vid, tried watching it starting at 3 AM, so I fell
asleep..) Oliver Stone is a good director though, and I really should go
rent it, methinks.. Can't comment

OK, this is where I disagree completely. 'Contact' is one of the worst
SciFi movies I've seen in a movie theater. I was epecting a really good
movie, instead I was treated to 2 hours of Jodie Foster (miss monotone,
don't really like er as an actress...seems she's good in 'Silence of the
Lambs' which I STILL haven't seen.) Overall a dissapointment, esp the
totally inconclusive ending; it was all about internal politics and
listening to noise, not much else. Didn't read the novel, but several
friends that did likd it (didn't love it, thought it was OK) but did not
like the movie at all. Sagan has done some gerat stuff (the little I've
seen, mostly TV things..) but Contact did not turn out to be a
particularly great movie in the end.
> So that's it for now. I'm sure I'll regret some choices later, think of

OK, for other good stuff not mentioned yet, no real particular order
Se7en: Great thriller (again Spacey, who wasn't listed on the posters
because he thought that would give away who the killer was too
quickly..), dark, depressing, wondrfully filmed (colors, sounds, the
mood..)
Wild Things: Good fun, lots of nice looking girls getting practcally
naked ;-) nd an even more twisted an convoluted plot than the Usual
Suspects. Really worth a look, though it gets mixed reveiws.
A Time to Kill: Best Grisham book adaptation, great cast (S L Jackson,
Sandra Bullok, the Sutherlands (pop and son), M Maconnaghy(sp?)..) Well
worth a look, big time dramam, etc.
American History X: Very disturbing, very well filmed, written and
directed movie. Chilling insight into the White Supreamcist movement,
but in the end a stoy about people and change. Brilliant Edward Norton.
Primal Fear: Another good 'legal' movie, with richard gere and a very,
very impressive Edward Norton (who you can hardly recognize as being the
same man..
Shawshank Redemption: Really good prison movie, great acting by Tim
Robbins and Morgan Freeman
Cruel Intentions: Liked it a lot, better than the average teen flick,
hilariously funny in the beginning, sad at the end. Well executed movie,
not great, but well worth watching.
10 things I hate about you and Clueless: Two 'better than average' teen
comedies, IMHO. Doesn't meana whole lot thouh...;-)
Alien Movies: The first one is a real masterpiece, the next two are
good, the last one (ressurection) falls well short of expectations. Joss
Whedon wrote that one, and was very dissapointed at how the director
decided to interpret that, with all the cuts made, etc.
Blade Runner: Absolute classic, must see. Another great Ridley Scott
movie.
Stargate: Another good fun pocorn-type movie. Well executed, good
casting.
Star Trek: First contact: What can I say, I love the Borg :-)
(yesterdays ep was great...) Really dont like TOS movies though, and
generations and insurrection weren't very convincing, IMHO...
Hamlet: 4 hour Kenneth Branagh version. Yes, really. If you like
shakespeare (ie, if you want to appreciate the beauty of the english
language) watch this movie. Star studded cast, and branagh does a
brilliant portrayal of the Danish prince.
6th Sense: Great fun to watch, nice atmosphee, plot twist, recommended
watching.
Braveheart: Beautifully done historic epos. Rob roy is also decent, but
braveheart is better.
Interview with a Vampire: Pretty good vampire movie worth a look even if
you don't really like the genre.
Mary Shellys Frankenstein: FF Coppola version, with Branagh and DeNiro
as the monetr, brilliantly done
Bram Stokers Dracula: Again, the Coppola version, quite well executed,
though not as good as Frankenstein, IMHO
Apocalypse Now: Again Coppola, with probably his best movie. Amazing
acting, gruelling retelling of Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' in Vietnam.
A truly great film, one of the classics. The whole landing sequence,
surfing during the bombardment; "I love te smell of Napalm in the
morning". 'nuff said
A lot of the stuff was real too (the whole drunk bedroom scene, Martin
Sheen cutting his hand, etc. happened; he was totally plasterd, he even
had a breakdown on the set, heart attack, and had to stop.) If you watch
the movie, you really should try to find a copy of the documentary his
wife made on the Making of (I think its called 'Hearts of Darkness: a
Filmmakers aocalypse" or something like that...the two should really be
viewed together.)
2001: a Space Oddessy: Another classic, signed by Kubrick. what more can
I saw? (well, apart from lots ;-)
Monty Python: Life of Brian and Quest for the Holy Grail: Given the
header you chose, I'm surprised that these two movies aren't in your
list ;-) Life of Brian is a brilliant satire, best of their movies, and
Holy Grail not too far behind. Classic comedy.
While I'm doing comedy:
Ausin Powers films: Great fun, love spoofs, some of the best ones in
recent (and not so recent) years
Wayne's World: Dunno. Nostalgic, maybe? Just funny, first much more than
the second
Dr. Strangelove: a brilliant critique on the Cold War, with an amazing
Peter Sellers
the Pink Panther: Inspector Clouseau, need I say more?
Well, I'm sort of running out of steam, I'm sure I'll think of more
stuff to fill in the blanks. As of right now, my top 3 movies (without
an order) would have to be:
The Usual Suspects, American Beauty, Apocalypse Now for good movies,
Star Wars films on the top of my SciFi list (the two aren't mutually
exclusive, but a really great SciFi/Fantasy flick is not always a good
Movie, by my standards at least..)
There, hope yu enjoyed that, bring on the critique, and add to my list!
Mattia
Flourish, no, but it could pice things up in those times when nothing
worth discussing is on TV ;-)
So I see...very different taste from myself: don't really like the whole
horror genre very much, although I haven't really bothered looking at
very many movies...the ones I've seen put me off. Do enjoy Burton Movies
quite a bit though, which I forgot to metnon in my last post....
Mattia
I agree that 'Jedi' is the worst of the three, but my personal favorite
would have to be SW5 (Empire strikes back...although sometimes it
changes back to SW4...;-) IMHO, you can't really the view them apart;
you really have to watch them all (not necesarily in one sitting) if you
want to saw you've watched 'Star Wars'
My opinion of course..

'best of lists' incredibly difficult..
Mattia
Oh yes. If you like Blues, you'll like these movies....You're a Dan
Akroyd fan, aren't you? ;-) The comic stuff above is on my 'fun to watch
ocasionally' list.

Strange choice..didn't see it, don' really like Hugh Grant much..

wow...are you actually SERIOUS??? Watrworld at number 1? I mean, its not
as terrible as a lot of people made it ot to be, but still...Next you'll

Ok, I'll give you the ewoks, I'll even give you the whole muppet jabba the hutt
scene in 6, but I actually like 5 best ("Luke, I am your father") and there's
some damn cool parts in 6 as well (the space battle, luke fighting vader and
palpatine)

And you spotted the first one I didn't think of yesterday :-). Not sure it
deserves to be in my top ten though. It *was* a great film however. Other good
thrillers that just poped to mind: Heat, The Devil's advocate and Fallen.

I went two times. Couldn't get anyone to go any more than that. Finally got in
on cd and later on video. Must've watched it at least 15-16 times now....

I'm really not :-). I can't really explain what it is that contact has. It
probably wouldn't be in my top ten "best films ever made", but it is the film I
enjoyed watching most. It's probably just the optimism in the view of our galaxy
and the question whether or not we're alone. I've allways been a "fan" of the
SETI project as well so that helped. Also it was one of the first films I could
really believe from a scientists point of view (although the book did a better
job at that). All in all it always gives me the shivers....just really like it.

Hmm, interesting. One of the reasons I haven't seen this movie yet is because I
was thinking "not another racist movie". It's been done. But if you say it's
that good, I might check it out in the furture.....

Very true. I didn't see that ending coming either, it was a very good movie.
Loved the acting as well....somehow I just don't see it in my top ten. It would
be in my top 25 though.....
> Pulp Fiction
> Say no more
Indeed. Only weird thing is, I've never seen it completly. It's one of those
movies I tend to watch in the middle of the night when someone's having a party,
and I allways miss the whole thing. And somehow I've never rented it.....not
sure why. I know I'd love it....ah well.....
> Blade Runner
> Classic SF. Very well shot. Man, that city is depressing! And yes, Hauer

I found Blade Runner disapointing. Someone recently said that was probably
because I didn't watch the directors cut. So I'm going to watch that
soonish.....
> American Beauty
> I'm a great fan of Kevin Spacey, but the whole film is a joy to watch. I'm

Yes, very good movie. Saw it in the cinema twice so far. Lot of people seem to
miss the humour in it as well (gieven the fact that my friends and I were the
only ones laughing most of the time), but besides the funny it's also very good.
I love the "plastic bag" moment. In fact I love the whole movie. The only thing
slightly disapointing is spacey's end narrative. They should have left that
out.... Probably should've been in my top 10.....
See Ya,
George
Definately. And thenthe whole ending with the quote and the cut to black
screen:
"The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled, was convincing the world he
didn't exist. And like that, he was gone."
Actually, there is one great little reference to "The Usual Suspects" in
the Eddie Murphy vehicle "Doctor Dolittle"; when he's walking into the
dog pound, hearing all of the dogs talking one of them wth (I think)
Kevin Spacey's voice says "I am Keyser Soze" Cracked me up big time..

Gees... so many interesting posts, so little time...
I just want to throw in one quick comment here. Contact is a
fantastic movie. Completely agree with George. Well, don't know
about number 1 of all time, but hey, that's a tough question and
this answer is good enough for me. Contact was one of the first
really kick-ass special editon DVDs by the wonderful people at
Warner Brothers back in 1997 and it was one of my very first DVD
purchases. Loads of extra's including no less than three (!)
interesting commentary tracks. One by Jodie, one by director Robert
Zemeckis, one by some sfx guys.
For my other favorite movies, I'd also like to mention the Back to
the Future trilogy. Never get tired of seeing them. Incidentally,
same director, Robert Zemeckis. I seem to like this guy ;-)
Gotta go,

that's probably not mathematically correct, but still, pretty

apparently its not (yet? anymore?) avliable in the UK, at least not from

I haven't rented in the longest time (I've rented to watch at other

It's a film by Lars von Trier, who also made "The Kingdom": that weird
tv-series about a hospital in Denmark that was on dutch television about a
year ago.
The female protagonist is played by Emily Watson, who playes a somewhat
simple girl who imagines she has a close link with God. She got an
oscar-nomination for her role, but didn't get it, because the film isn't a
mainstream Hollywood film.
The film itself is a bit dark, but odds are that if you liked The Kingdom,
you'll also like this one, even though they're not much alike.

Same here. I've found it's best to just write down the first movies that pop
up and forget about the rest, or else you have to make some very difficult
choises.

I fell asleep the first time I saw Heat, probably because I was half-drunk
and it was about 2 in the morning when the movie _started_, but still, I
never did get to like it. Devils Advocate was good, but not as good as TUS
or 7, IMHO. I didn't like Fallen so much: during the whole movie I
remembered the voice-over from the beginning and I saw the ending coming
from miles ahead. Bit of a letdown, cause the idea was very nice

A whole group of us went to the cinema together for about five times. We're
all a bit mad about it. My roommate has the DVD now, so I've seen it about
15 times too now I guess
Probably because I read the book first. The movie can't really compete with
that.

You had that too? There was a couple next to me who _really_ didn''t get the

about the film to each other. I had to kill them (verbally that is:).

NO!!! NOT the Mel Gibson one (which I haven't seen, but others have, and
have ssen the one I'm talking about, and agree that the Gibson Version
isn't that good, not true to the text and story..)
I'm talking about the Fully Text, 4 hour long movie directed by Kenneth
Branagh (who also plays the lead role) and with a cast filled with stars
like Jack Lemmon, Robin Williams, Kate Winslet (ophelia) Derek Jacobi
(Known british shaekpearean actor, plays Claudius) Julie Christie, etc.)
If you like shakespeare, give it a watch, otherwise, give it a miss..

Yup, and justly so. It's _very_ realistic. Not for someone with a weak
stomach.
A very good movie. May be worth a spot in my top 11.

One of the two Hugh Grant films worth watching, IMHO, the other one being
FWaaF.

Cherry 2000?!!? Haha
Well C2000 was a very laughable movie. Laughed harder there than any Nielsen
movie I ever saw.

The only problem with that being.....I can't seem to find it anywhere. I really
want to buy the movie, but it's out of stock almost everywhere, my local video
rental places have mispalced their copies and never replaced them (and that's
happened at not one, not two, but three (!) places). Anyone with any tips on
where to get my hands on a copy would be greatly rewarded (well ok, not rewarded
in the literal sense...or in any other sense....)><

Had that with a few movies as well. First (ond only) time I saw bravehart was at
a friends party where we started watching at about 3:30. Missed some parts due
to extreme "meligheid" (excuse my dutch...but whats the translation for
"melig"??), but I actually still enjoyed it. Heat *is* however a long movie
which I think you like or you don't like.....you didn't, I did :-)

Indeed. The end ruined it (the whole thing being reset like that), but I never
watch that part anymore. Like my own private directors cut ;-)

I did *not* see the ending coming. I know the movie opens with "let me tell you
about the time I nearly died" , but the voice is that of Denzel Washington, and
the whole movie had me thinking the main character was the narrator. The fact
that the narrator turned out to be the fallen angel was a huge surprise to me.
Guess I perhaps should have seen it coming, but none of the people I watched the
movie with did ether......the movie is a lot better with the surprise of the end
though, so I'm kind of glad I didn't see it coming......

That's very true. I'd never really read anything by Carl Sagan before contact.
The movie made me read the book (which I incidently never finished because of
library troubles. I just bought the novel though, so I'll probably be reading it
soonish).

I *know*. Sad thing is I recently (as in just now actually) discovered I had it
taped from television all this time......definatly gonna watch it now sometime
soon........

Irritating isn't that. Ah well we all have our pet peeves, especially at the
movies. The most anoying thing is sitting beside people who don't get or don't
like a movie you're enjoying. Ah well it happens :-)

And here my sad sad weak stomach comes into play :-( Don't know why, but
extensive blood or gore or in this case realism really bothers me. Don't know
why. Allways had that. I'm missing out on some great films. Now only if there

I missed that reference (probably because I didn't see Dr. Dolittle). But I
think there are more movies/shows with tusp references. I think Keyser Soze
might be one of the best known movie and tv "badies" of all time. Next to darth

Yep. Well, Creative Dxr3 actually, but it's exaclty the same card. I

Election I haven't heard too much about, apart from spotting the title on a
release schedule. What's it about??

I just read that Pathe ArenA still sucks a bit, with the whole thing not
really completed yet. Also, I'm not sure if BJM plays in most large theatres.
I went to see it in babylon (den haag) and that's a fairly small theatre. It
didn't play in Pathé scheveningen (which I usually go to).....

Of course, if you're not a star wars fan it isn't quite as funny.....but as
far as spoofs go, there's nothing quite like it. Mel brooks is a spoofing

The only Sci Fi elements were the space ships. SciFi is generally a story
based on moderen science, a story based on what could happen in the future.
Fantasy creates a realm of it's own in which the basic laws of physics are
different, in which anything is possible. All the Fantasy clichés (which I
love btw) are in Star Wars as well. A young person (a boy. In this case Luke)
is fulfilling his destination, and has special abilities. There's magick and a
group who uses that magick (the force and the jedi. Compare with The one power
and the Aes Sedai in "the wheel of time" for instance). There's a battle
between good and evil, where good finally wins. Etc. etc. etc.

the star wars theme from memory??

Well, there wasn't really another way for the story to go, given the story
line about the matrix. The shootout came naturally from the story. It was used
like sword fights and the use of magick are used in fantasy books. Greatly
done......> 2) JFK:

Agree.....loved it as well.....

Yes. Denise Richards and Neve Cambell are easy on the eye. There are in deed a
lot of plot twists, but none of them were truly surprising, some even a littly
rediculous. The presence of DR and NC in very few clothes really did save the
movie though.....

Not sure it's the best Grisham movie. I did love it though. I love most legal
movies for that matter.....

good and lots of fun.....

I *loved* clueless and I liked 10 things I hate about you. 10 things was more
avarage. Not bad though.....

simply like the show better.....

Didn't like it. Too much decoration, too little content. All
about costumes and set designs, no drama, no Horror.

This one was done better, but not perfect.
I prefer another modern adaptation of a classis Horror novel:
Mary Reilly (1996). It's the story of Jekyll and Hide as it is
witnessed by Jekyll's made servant.

Has this movie ever been shown on Dutch television? I mean, such
a classic.

Indeed! One of the funniest thriller/horror pics I ever saw and a great

Actually, no. We went through this whole categorization thing in nksf+f,
and Andrea came up with a good definition (which I can't find right
now..) Bascially, Buffy and Angel take elements from Horror, Fantasy,
Comedy, Drama, etc. and do somthing with them, use them to create their
own unique style, which doesnt really fit into any one category. If
pushed hard, I would categorize the show (mostly) as Occult Comedy (at
least today I would...:o)
What I consider Horror is the Freddy Krueger, Childs Play, type stuff (I
sort of Liked scream, but that wasn't scary in the slightest...never
watch them at theaters, means there is a very annying population of
noisy young teenagers that don't know how to shut up and watch a
movie...plus not really worth the mullah :-)

Devils Advocate and Fallen I think are ood choices for a top 10, but
Heat is really, really good, IMHO. Pacino/DeNiro combo, great camera
work, images, silences.

Probably has a lot to do with it. Know a lot of people who thought it
was dead boring though, as well as a whole lot who loved it..If you
liked heat, you'll probably like 'The Insider' a lot too. Forgot to
metnion that movie, buit its another strongly recommended movie thats
out in theaters now, I believe. Another Michael Mann film (same
director) with Pacino and Russel Crowe, and its a true story. It should
have gotten some Oscars, I think..

hehe...almost as bad as some people were with Titanic (but at least I
can sort of relate to the Matrix re-vieweing) Had this guy on a TV
interview who had been going to see Titanic every weekend since it was
released (it had been out for around 3 months at the time...)

Had very similar expirience..I was in a relatively full theater, and I
was the only one laughing most of the time...started to wonder if
something was wrong with me...:-)

Only bugs me if its my own (luckily, or these Anatomie Practica would be
hell, but they are actually kinda fun :-)
Speaking of bloody Movies, a fun Vampire movie to watch is 'From Dusk

Tarantino, Salma Hayeck (briefly) and Cheech Marin 3 times (in three
different roles..)

Wan't Fuckadoodledoo also in that movie? haven't seen it in the longest
time...Brit swearing is also a bucketload of fun, which is why I like
Spike so much. In fact, I'm working on a website (in collaboration with
someone), sort of a semi-fanfic fictional newspaper/real news about
buffy type site..Kind of novel concept, we think (haven't seen it
before...) and I just finished writing the first Spike Column (I think
its OK, don't really know though...lots of swearing it it :-) Site
should really be running soon (need to write more stories, etc..)

monty python type of silly ("Stop it, this is getting silly..." type of
silly)

Yeah, it kinda makes the movie less. You already know that the Fallen
one is gonna get out of it, so you figure Denzel has gotta die...or will
he?

that, and people talking..had it during Scream 3 (was really bored, only
movie starting at that time and at that place...should have saved the

Umm...just checked, and if your VCR can play US tapes (and if it and
your TV are relatively new, it can...the little NTSC compatible thing..)
you can order it from Amazon.com (things not avaliable in the UK) for 10
bucks (14 for widescreen, which takes longer to ship, or 18 for DVD...)
See, that wasn't too hard? ;-)

Will do..probably happen tomorrow (if its not too busy, etc.) else on
Saturday (sunday is Buffy day, since the showings are only late :-)

Its an MTV produced movie (of all things) thats basically a satire on
the 92 presidential elections in the US; Reese Whitherspoon (girl from
Cruel Intentions, now wife and mother of Ryan Phillipes daughter, I
believe..) plays Tracy Flick, a snooty, smartass girsl who is running
for class president, with nobody running against her. Broderick plays
the school principal who hates the girl (why is celar in movie..she had
an affair with a teacher and got him kicked out or something) so he
finds people to put up against her. Supposedly a very shapr, stinging
commentray on the US political system and good fun at the same time..

Hell no!!! Only French TV is dummed (I meant dubbed, but dummed works
too ;-), about 70% of all movies shown in theaters are VO (you can find
dubbed if you look, and like here, most of the Cartoons and kids things
are dubbed as well, at least for most showings) I have seen Jedi in
french (on TV, since its the only SW movie they ever show in TV, for
some odd reason..)
I actually still have all the ticket stubbs for each time I've seen a SW
movie in the theater :-) (well, I keep almost all my stubbs
anyway..found them by accident recently..)

Now that, my firend, is truly worrying. Basic lack in comedy education
(no Killer Rabbits seen, no pretend horses, no 'Always look on the
brigth side of life' at crucifictions, no 'what have the Romans ever
done for us' speech..). Where were you not so very many months back when
Net5 was doing their Python Nights and showed both movies? Have them on

Yes, that was a good movie (Malkovich and Julia Roberts...very well
executed film)

I dunno, haven't lived here for that long (2 years in september..) Then
again, when is the last time Apocalypse Now or one of the SW films was
shown? (again, I wouldn't know...) Actually, arte did Apocalypse Now and
the making of documentary not so very long ago, I believe (well, its
been months, but still...watche dit in France but its bascially the same
channel..)
Mattia
Yeah. Plus she can act, and its supposed to be good satire/comdey of the
US electoral system...fitting for this year again..

Ok, I'll say it again: 'twas subtitled, I have never, repeat NEVER
watched a movie dubbed in a theater (in France at least..watched Twister
in Italian with my cousins, and like 2 movies when I was about 10 and
living ingermany where subtitles don't exist..)
Happy and relieved now? Problem is, of course, that I have seen Buffy
and a lot of other TV sereis in french (and German, and Italian once in
a while...) Makes watching TV in Holland that little bit more addictive
:-)

Just a little bit o' Kevin fan.

I won't bother. Its one of those 'you think its brilliant or ya don't'
situations. I loved the whole camera work, subtle details of HOW it was
filmed, what was filmed, sound editing, (more impressive sound, or lack
thereof, than the Matrix, IMNSHO) the whole thing fit together really
well. Strong imgaery used, etc. Thats what impressed me a lot, not just
the story, the whole 'artistic' side to it.
So, did you watch TMP? ;-)
I watched it before it became all hyped up (about the same week it was
released in theaters, before the ridiculous numbers started showing
up..what I saw didn't impress me overly much, didn't feel the need to
see the beginning or the ending of it..)

Before merican History X, you mean? and not long after, he was back to
his old self..And is it on? Me go watch it then :-)

Prelim site is up, I just saw, and the column is uploaded..Not too great
yet, I'm gonna write some more 'articles' tomorrow. Feel free to tell me
what you think...Other guys wrote the Willow Column (which is harder to
do IMHO, so I'll stick to the Spike. Feedback welcome, but I already
said that..)

Who's hoping other people think its as funny as he thought it was when

He'll ne'er give you that. I got him Angel on video (*twice*) when he missed
it and threw in a *free* ep. of Charmed. Got some credits (i hope).

The servant wasn't made (Frankenstein again), I meant "maid servant".

The first three SW films were all on Dutch TV. But I don't care much
for Fantasy (with some exceptions, like Xena and Hercules).

From Dusk Till Dawn was the first film with Juliette Lewis I
saw. She won me over immediately. I saw her in two more movies,
Natural Born Killers, and That Night (?), a romantic teen drama
set in suburban fifties (with a very young Eliza Dushku). Her
name on the list of actors is enough reason for me to see a
film. Others are Theresa Russell and Meg Tilly.

Yeah, I really wanted to go see that in a theatre, but I was outvoted to see american
pie a second time. Than this week we decided to do scream 3 (which I gave a miss).
Most weeks before we allready went to the theatre twice a week, so a third time wasn't
going to happen ;-). I'm gonna see if it's still playing anywhere though, otherwise
I'm gonna have to catch it on video....

Yeah, I had read that the end spoiled the film, so when he did you know what I was all
like, well that didn't suck, I loved the ending fully expecting the credits to pop up,
but they didn't.....damnit...

Too many tapes. I tape most shows I like, I tape lots of movies and I have a smallish
collection of bought videos (smallish in comparison with some collections I've
seen....). All of that's in one place, so it's failry hard to loose tapes.....

endless ;-)

Indeed, and yet I guess you're the top poster in here now (as in the person who
posts the most). We really should do a top posters list in here as well, like they
do in nksf. It should be fun watching how much everyone posts. So how *do* they do

Oh yes, men in tights was very funny as well. Not as good as spaceballs. Hmm hoping

Ok, you have a point there as well. But *magick* isn't in any true sf movie.....
It is in Greek epic poems. Thats fairly logical actually since mythology is an
ancient form of fantasy. Or better put, fantasy is the mythology of the present
day.....

*lol*. That was actually one thing that bothered me in TPM. I liked the force to be
more mysterious, more magical. Now its tiny bacteria. Kinda makes it loose it's
fun.......

Ok, first of I know it's weird I haven't seen the monthy python movies, but I never
even knew about MP's existance to about a year back when a friend of mine turned out
to be a huge fan. Watched some skits at his place and discovered I *loved* the
humor. I comepletly missed out on the monthy python night on net5, not sure why. Oh
and sure you can bring the movies along. Not sure if we'll get to watching them, but
if we don't I can allways borrow 'em from that same friend. So just use your own
judgement there :-)

The monthly lists [1] are compiled by good old me. I just save all
the month's messages to one big file (called nksf) after which the
following UNIX comand
$ frm nksf | cut -c-22 | sort | uniq -c | sort -r | cat -n
pretty much outputs the list. I do some preliminary tweaking to
combine slightly different names which are actually the same people
and for now I'm still simply adding the "last month" positions by
hand.
I was actaully going to to one for April for this group just for the
heck of it, but unfortunately it seems my server doesn't keep
messages for this group for as long as it does for the nl.* groups
so I didn't have the whole month any more. If you like I'll make a
point of saving them every week or so so I have the whole month at
the end of the month and then I could provide the same service here.
Here's a test list for the period from 28 Apr till NOW. I've
restricted it to a Top 17 beacause after that comes a whole list of
people with only one post.

That would be poor man's mythology. Truly modern mythology is
something like Micky Mouse.

I think DVD is rather overrrated. Sure, you get a better quality, but it's

But SVHS is expensive, I find...DVD better, random access, cheap
soltuions avaliable (PC DVD..) extras, can record them onto VHS tapes
(with appropriate hardware, that is ;-) and don't degrade over time/with
numerous watchings..DVD recordables would be nice tho ;-)

No, Sphere is a Michael Crichton book (Jurassic Park, eaters of the

I'll keep an eye out. I have a love/hate thing with Robin Williams going on.

That would be my prime reason to buy one. All those videotapes
take up to much space in my little, humble apartment. And if I

Oddly enough, the only film with Teresa Russell I can remember is

Ok, I'll have a go at this. Actually, I want to mention one movie in
particular. In the spirit of these days of commemoration, it's Schindler's
List. If I would recommend a movie to anyone, this would be it. It is a must
see, not only because it's a great film, but also because it makes you live
through the emotions of the people who suffered. It grabs you by your
throat, and only releases you long after the ending titles have scrolled. It
really makes you think about the war, about what happened to people (and
this time not those in the battlefield).
Bye, Patrick
Fitting recommendation I guess, but I haven't seen it. Keep saying I
will, never actually get the chance to. Maybe I'll head down to that

I'd really go watch it if I were you. It's the best film about WWII I've
seen. I was debating whether to put it in my top 11 or not, but I was a bit
heavy on the "serious" movies as it was and I wanted to have a bit of
balance.
I'm glad I watched this movie on my own, with no one around to spoil the
atmosphere. I can recommand the same to you.

Ok.....SVHS? I must be missing something....what's that? <looks as everyone starts
pointing at him chanting "he doesn't know what SVHS is, he must be dealt with
now">. But, yeah the best thing about DVD's would be the constant quality. I've
watched degraded tapes way too many times allready....

As for Carl Sagan: Contact was his only novel. He did however write some other
interesting (populair) scientifics books on cosmology and about the relation
between religion and science....

*lol*. Ok meant to type nationalist mode there. Notionalist, that would
be a person who's proud of one particular notion....or something like
that ;-)

You think so? Don't you think things like star wars (as far as movies go) and Lord of
the Rings are actually a bit more than a poor man's mythology. Instead you give us
mickey mouse??

I hope it will be puchaseble in about three years. Technically it's probably
already possible, but I think they'll delay bringing it on the market untill
more people have bought DVD.

Super VHS. It's supposed to be twice as sharp as normal VHS. Of course, they
say the same thing about DVD, so they must be equally good, right? :)

I'll keep it with last weeks ad. Armalite, one shot one kill. Like the idea

No, I don't have probs with the neswserver; I get all the messages (and

I know...this is a bit of a wake-up call...disproportionate amount of
posts lately..Its all that catching up on epsidoes (tape them, no
commenting for a while, then responding to practically weverything
that's been said already..) Its eating up too much time though...

Yeah, lets see how represenatavie these past few days are ;-)
Mattia
SVHS is Super VHS. Better picture, sounds, etc., as I understand it.
DOn't really know much more about it though, sorry..Basically, the top
of the line expensive VCRs are usually SVHS.
