The waiting is over. The latest BBC schedules are out today and TWW can
confirm from our sources close to the Beeb that the new run of Buffy on
BBC2 will commence on Thursday 28th October 1999 at 6.45pm with
Halloween (which means you can watch it again on SKY the day after!) Not
much
more to add really, other than to expect the odd cut or twenty.

Great news.
However, "the odd cut or twenty" ? Do you know for certain that they cut
even in a more or less innocent show like BtVS ?
I know in the UK and the US, they look at stuff in a different way than in
the Netherlands (what is harmfull to the delicate mind of an innocent child
or how people can be scarred for life if they happen to see a naked breast
on tv, I mean). I would dare to say in the Nl we make less fuss about
these things.
But like I said before, I can't imagine that there is something to cut in
BtVS.
Is there any proof ? Does anybody know ? Please tell me, I would very
much like to know. Thanks.

Yup....the bbc have cut a *lot* from the buffy episodes they've allready aired
because of the 6:45 (uk time) timeslot. Buffy is aired in that timeslot that is
meant for families (I believe) and a slot which is considered to be a slot with
potential viewing from children. The leads to cuts in the UK (which I still
find *really* weird, but it seems to be pretty normal in the UK...I even have a
few movies that were aired on the beeb which have like a few scentences less
than the versions I taped on dutch tv (like star trek generations for
instance). In holland buffy isnt cut (thank god) and thats really the way it
should be......
conclusion : another good reason to be glad to be dutch <hides from uk

See Ya,
George
Yes, we know for certain that they cut even in a more or less innocent
show like BtVS. <g> BBC hasn't gone much beyond the first season (the
last ep shown was Reptile Boy) and they've already been cutting stuff.
I don't know what exactly, mainly 'cause I haven't seen the cut
versions, but I do remember (a) Buffy staking vampires, in WTTH,
getting cut ('cause goodness knows we wouldn't want to show violence
against evil creatures) and (b) the (spoken, obviously) use of the
word "bastards" getting blanked out.
I think they do this because they treat it as a kid's show, and
because they're showing it at a time when children could watch (as
opposed to after the watershed at (I think) 9pm) and so can't show any
of the Really Bad Stuff. Of course, the Really Bad Stuff is mainly
Really Bad by their own definitions, so go fig.
And of course, of the three seasons, the first (and the initial
parts of the second) is by far the lightest, Really-Bad-Stuff-wise.
I'm curious to see what they'll do with, like, Passion, or The Wish.

Basically, the only way in the UK (on BBC) to get an audience is to show
it at a time when families are sitting down for their evening meal.
Because of the time many scenes have to be cut because they are deemed
too violent or scary for younger children... even though the slot is
allegedly not a children's slot (they now class Buffy under "Children's
Television).
The BBC even cut episodes of the X-Files and that is generally shown at
10pm. I don't believe in censorship of any kind... which is a debate
I'll not bore you with.... but it seems to me that the Brits (or the
BBC) are a bunch of prudes with bugs up their butts the size of an emu!!

Just wondering, who suffers the most: the Dutch from the British
squeamishness, or the British from the Dutch permissiveness? Yeah,
I know what country I prefer to live in. And George, no need to
hide, don't see a lot of British people here.

I'm assuming that one definite cut they'll make to "Innocence" is
Spike's use of the word "Wanker", which, of course, doesn't carry the
same sort of 'no-no' value as in Britain.

Oy! Watch it clog-boy! ;)
And stop watching our TV. We don't all watch "Gude Tijden, Slechte

The Dokwerker, 1941(?). That's something to be proud of.
Actually it _was_ cut. Recent episodes (since the move from SBS6 to NET5,
which
is actually the same company, but ... ah well, nevermind) have not been, but
of at least
the first 5 episode of season 1 or maybe even the entire season 1 not only
some scenes
were 'cut', but entire scenes were taken out!
This ran up to at least 3-5 minutes in every episode!
I cannot give all examples for Episodes 1&2 right now because I've lent my
Dutch S1
tape to someone at work, but I'll give 2 here.
1) The entire scene ending with Buffy jumping over the fence after Principal
Flutie has told
her not to leave the schoolgrounds and close the gate on her, had been
removed.
2) I remember some conversation between Buffy and her mother being removed
as well.

Conclusion: so, do we prefer cuts out of principles (to some people crummy
but still),
or do prefer cuts because the network wants to make more money?
(Dutch) $) Henri
In that case you watched a bastardised version of season one. To give the
very worst example of what they did, check out the list of cuts I compiled
after they aired Welcome To The Hellmouth/The Harvest:
In the mausoleum -
The bit where Luke bends down to bite Buffy when she's lying in the
sarcophagus is slightly cut.
In the Library -
Buffy remembering that Luke came from behind her - they don't show her
hitting the wall and falling to the ground again.
Trapped in the underground room -
Just after Jesse reveals himself as a vampire there was a commercial break
in America. The BBC edited it so that we didn't have a couple of seconds of
blank screen. Unfortunately they also managed to edit out Xander's first two
words to Jesse.
Xander: "*Jesse, man*. I'm sorry."
In The Master's lair - He is chastising one of his minions (Colin) for
letting Buffy and Xander escape.
Master: "There. That wasn't so bad was it? *Oh, hold on."
He stabs his fingernail (off camera) into Colin's eye.
Master: "You've got something in your eye.*"
In The Master's lair -
Luke actually biting into The Master's wrist and the sound of his feeding.
In Buffy's bedroom -
Buffy taking a very sharp stake from the chest and putting it up her sleeve.
The really, really stupid thing about this is that the bit they cut actually
appeared in one of the BBC trailers for the show!
At The Bronze -
Luke actually biting into the club bouncer.
At The Bronze -
Luke dropping the girl he has just fed off.
At The Bronze -
The last couple of seconds of the cymbal flying at the vampire holding
Xander.
At The Bronze -
Luke baring fangs and leaning in to bite Buffy before she backward headbutts
him.
At The Bronze -
Darla's hands over her face as it steams from the holy water Willow just
threw in it.
This was as bad as it ever got I have to say. Cuts were made to several
other episodes in season 1 and the first five of season 2 but they were far
less noticeable.
Cally
Yes, but as far as I know Net 5 started with "What's my line" . (Or they
showed previous eps before we got Net 5 on cable). So I watched season
one and the first part of season two on BBC.
And yes, I'm also glad to be dutch (The Brits are already chaising you, so
I'm safe).

See Ya,
George -who would've clapped his hands had he been there-
Tut tut, Cally... you forgot the scene at the very beginning of the
episode where Darla first turns into a Vampire and feeds off her "date".
They faded the scene out a few seconds too early.

I missed the first half of season 1 in the original run on sbs, so I can't
really judge those, plus I hadnt taped them either (s1) so I'm not too sure
about cuts in those eps...I *am* sure though that starting from s2, nothing has

We (being me actually <g>) definatly do *not* prefer cuts and adverts (does the
extremly early first advert in recent net5 buffy eps bother anyone else?). But
since there havent been any cuts in the last two seasons (and probably the last
half of s1 as well......prohecy girl was completly intact for instance..) to
make room for 'em I dont really mind...
See Ya,
George
Actually, I left out more than that. I was cutting and pasting from an old
post of mine and I managed to leave out all the cuts made to WTTH and just
did The Harvest. Anyway, here they are in all their glory:
In the teaser - Darla actually biting and feeding off her victim.
In the mausoleum - Buffy's staking of Thomas was cut so we didn't see the
stake connect or Thomas' face over her shoulder as he realises.
In the mausoleum - Buffy hitting the wall and falling to the ground after
Luke has thrown her.
In the mausoleum - After Luke has thrown Buffy across the room for the
second time, we should have seen her landing on the corner of the
sarcophagus and then falling to the ground. She then starts to pick herself
up by using the stairs. The scripture that Luke was quoting at this point
has been dubbed over Giles looking through his book. Roughly ten seconds
have been lost from this scene altogether.
In the mausoleum - When Buffy lands in the sarcophagus, sees the skeleton
and starts to sit up when Luke does not immediately appear. Roughly 17
seconds gone here.

SBS 6 originally aired buffy and showed all episodes untill "the dark age".
Since net 5 and sbs 6 are actually the same network, net5 got to air the
remaining part of buffy. I remember sending lots of letters to sbs6 asking them
when they were planning to air buffy again.....those were the days (*not*)....
Anyone remember the exact time we were buffy-less? it was about 6 months I'm
guessing....(but I could be completly off there...)
See Ya,
George
We were Buffy-less from Sept. 1st of last year (the start of last
years winter season) until around March of this year (the launch of
Net5).

And the birdie song :-(
And some dutch words even you use:

Hi,
I wish I could say, but I'm simply not allowed to for fear of dropping somebody
right in it! Sorry to be so vague but I've been asked to play it that way and I
have to comply or I won't get any more info from the same person. Obviously the
TWW track record should speak for itself (first to announce Buffy had been
bought by the Beeb and when it would be screeened, first with the season 3 SKY
dates and the two per week news etc.) If I'm wrong you can say I told you so

Not quite: British TV has (and always has had) very specific areas of
the day during which particular types of programmes can be scheduled.
"Children's programmes" are *always* shown between 4.00pm and 5.35pm not
only on the BBC, but on Independent TV also. From 5.35 onwards until
around 8pm, the slots are designated for "family viewing", meaning that
programmes in this period cannot contain anything that is considered
"adult" (excessive bad language, overt sexual content, and specific
types of violence). The fact that Buffy (occasionally) falls into at
least one of these categories (and *very* occasionally, two!) brings
into question why the BBC placed the series where it did; however, the
BBC's response to all of this has always been that they do not consider
Buffy to be a significantly more adult show than several other American
series that they have purchased and shown in the same time slot (the
Star trek series are the obvious example). A further complication is
that a recently leaked BBC internal memo appears to suggest that at
least some people in the BBC publicity department believe that Buffy
actually *is* a children's series (a view not shared by the scheduling
arm of the corporation) - this merely reflects what a lot of us have
long believe - that the BBC, basically, bought Buffy without having
actually watched much of it.

The former - definitively.

I described the editing of WTTH at the time as being like it had been
done by a drunken man, who had been awake for seventy two hours, using a
blunt hacksaw. I stand by that assessment.
