Ok, so that was Five by Five.
I'd been looking forward to this ep for quite some time now. I knew it
was comming and I'd heard great things about it. Well it didn't
disapoint. Not one bit....

This ep starts of regularly with Angel rescuing some guy from some
left-over-from-the-make-up-departmen-demons [tm]. After this Angel tries
to convince him to testify against some obscure drugs dealer whos case
is being handled by Wolfram&Hart. This guy is the first instance of
Redemption in this ep, which seems to be its main theme. Why this ep
isn't titled redemption and is instead called Five by Five I don't get.

Anyways moving right along, we see faith arrive in LA by bus. We
imediatly see she hasn't changed a bit. Or perhaps she has, I don't
remember her being *this* crazy when we saw her last on Buffy (that
being s3). Anyways, faiths back and this time its personal. It isn't
really made clear why she came to LA, but I'm sure that got explained in
the previous Buffy eps.

We also see some flashbacks again. We see Angel together with Darla (a
combination I allways enjoy). Darla has a present for our vampiric
friend. Lets see what it is. Ah its a gipsy girl. Could it be *the*
gypsy girl? As we see in later scenes this turns out to be the case.
Angels all tormented when Darla returns and she's discusted by his soul
and rejects him. Angel then tries to feed of another woman but doesn't.
One thing that bothered me about that scene is the fact that Angel
suddenly speaks a different language. We've never heard him speak
anything but english in the flashbacks. Weird that thats different now.
Also his being with Darla here makes me wonder how the whole
Drussila/Spike thing fits into Angels personal history. Lets hope that
gets explained in eps to come. Anyways these flashbacks provide some
emotional scenes and some very welcome insight into Angels past. Really
enjoyed that. Also these flashbacks provide us with our second case of
redemption.

Back to the present then. Angels convincing of the witness obviously
pisses off Wolfram&Hart who are getting another recognisable face in
Lindsey McDonald. Anyways they decide to hire faith to kill Angel. Of
course faith immediatly jumps to that oportunity.

This is where the ep starts getting more interesting. Faith is playing a
game with Angel and obviously she's enjoying it. Or is she? She's one
troubled girl. We can at least say that much.

Faith than ups the stakes by invading Cordelias home (why didn't dennis
do more to protect them??) and abducts Welsey. We then get some extremly
powerfull torture scenes which show the strength of character Wesley has
gotten. He's truly becomming a heroic character. Anyways Angel
eventually busts in and we get a very good fight scene. Weird thing is
that both Angel and Faith seem to have gotten more powerfull and their
new moves certainly defy the laws of physics. Fun to watch though.

Finally, outside in the rain, Faith breaks down and pleads for Angel to
kill her. A thing he doesn't do. Even wesley who was tortured horribly
by this girl drops his knive when he sees this scene unfolding. Angel
then holds her and it continues to rain over the end credits. This scene
elevates the ep even further. Its beutifull and full of emotion. Truly
amazing stuff.

All in all this ep was, imho, the best thing we've seen in either Angel
s1 or Buffy s4 so far. Truly exceptional. It holds up in a rewatch as
well, btw.

I'll leave you with my 9/10 rating for this ep.

I can't wait for Sanctuary next week!!!!!

See Ya,
George

What does that mean anyway 5x5 ?

<snip review>
i think i'll just hold on discussing specific stuff till the rest joins
in. That way the ep also gets more time to sink in.

On a more general note: it absolutely amazes me how this show has
managed to rehabilitate some of my least favorite characters from Buffy
S3.
Cordy was becoming more and more one-dimensional, Wesley was just a
wuss, I disliked Faith from the start and even Angel was getting pretty
annoying by the end of S3.
But know that all these character (besides perhaps Angel) get to show
more sides of themselves [1], the writers make it possible to imagine
yourself in there shoes. And make you understand some of the reasons
why they are who they are, which makes them so much more interesting to
watch, even when the character itself is still enjoying sometimes.

Faith: "Angel please, just do it. Just do it. Just kill me. Just kill
me."

[1] to name a few:
Cordy: Room w/a view, City of..
Wesley: 5 by 5, I've got you under my skin
Faith: 5 by 5, Sancuary presumably

It sounds to much like Revelation perhaps?

Thought so to! He is Irish after all...<*snicker*>

Yes. And it shows the contrast between Angel and Faith. Faith can't deal
with the power she has and becomes extremely violent. (See my reply to
Peter for some more thoughts on this). Angel learns to deal with it, even
if he literaly hungers for death. I really think this is only because of
all the killing he's already done. he know there's no glory in it, and
that it really doesn't prove anything. Faith doesn't know this yet, is
very insecure and needs to prove to herself she's strong so she does
become a danger to other people

Maybe he isn't strong enough? I never saw the ep in which he got
introduced (that'll be rectified when I get the first Angel boxed set),
but did he ever do more than just move some light stuff? Perhaps he's
exhausted after a few tries at the door.

Yes, quite Hongkong-ish :)

Yes! I really sat frozen in my chair! Wow...

I know :)

I'll stick with my 8.5. There are some weaker parts as Peter pointed out,
but all-in-all very good!

You and me both!
