Yes, it's that time of year again. Time for me to temporarily delurk, and
time for us all to find out who has the best knowledge of Buffy and Angel in
the fifth (!!!) annual Advent Quiz.

The quiz will consist of the usual 240 questions spread over 20 days, and
this year will concentrate on Season 6 of Buffy and Season 3 of Angel, so
it's spoiler-free for those of you in the UK with either Sky access or the
video box-sets. The warm up round is now up and running -- results will be
posted once the main quiz is underway, but won't count towards the final
scores.

As well as this year's quiz, there are just under 900 questions available
from the past four years, so there's plenty of opportunity to practice and
get an idea what to expect. And don't worry if you only watch one show --
there'll be separate scoreboards again, as well as the overall one.

So if you fancy your chances, or just want to be scared at the amount of
knowledge that some people have, head over to http://www.buffyquiz.com

Life's a show and we all play our parts. And when the music starts, Lucky
Libran sings:

Hurray!!! I will probably suck at it, as usual, but they're always fun
:-)

Gawd, I'm the ubersuck. 3 out of 10. But there were at least 2 that I
knew the moment I clicked the wrong one ;)

How well did you test the Java applet?

I just tried on four browsers and it didn't work in any of them. In
Netscape 7, Mozilla and Galeon I got to the first question screen but the
question and answers were all blank and when the time reached the bottom
each of the browsers crashed. In Opera I just got a grey box. The applet
didn't work at all.

This is all on a pretty standard RedHat 8.0 installation.

I'd like to try your quiz, but it looks like I won't be able to.

Good enough.

All "Angel" questions correct, with a couple of Buffy flaws.

8/10. Cool.

One was a complete guess, though. :-)

Gave the practice a try - slightly dodgy question with two answers -
something like "Which pet was Willow not allowed to have?" to which
one of the wrong answers is goldfish, yet in "Triangle" she says she
wasn't allowed to have fish (when referencing the "Fish in the Bowl"
in "The Cat in the Hat".

Otherwise, nice :)

Yeah, some of the random questions will be quite dodgy. They're from past
quizzes, which means they can be either out of context (because they
followed on from another question, say) or just plain impossible (because
the theme of the original quiz they came from helped narrow down the
possibilities). At some stage I'll get through checking them all, but since
there's just under 900 it could take a while.

And well spotted on that one -- presumably a season 2 question written long
before Triangle! I'll change that wrong answer to something else...

Thanks!

Works fine for me under Mozilla 1.1 and Galeon. Not at all sure what the
difficulty might be. Which JDK are you using?

I'm running Mozilla 1.2 beta under Redhat 7.3 and that works fine too.
Must be a problem with the JVM.

Only got 7 out of 10, though. Very disappointing..

Can't say I tested it very well, I'm afraid -- haven't had the time this
year, since it's been written whenever my boss has his back turned, so I've
just been running it in IE and hoping for the best. Yours is the first
comment I've had about it not working, though.

The Opera problem sounds like it could possibly be a problem with the applet
itself (or maybe Opera), but the others are interesting -- sounds as though
it couldn't load in the question set, hence the blank questions. Security
settings too high, maybe? That's about the only thing I can think of at the
moment, I'm afraid...

Can you bring up the java console with any of those browsers and see if it
outputs any errors? Can't guarantee I'll be able to sort it out, but if
it's a quick fix I'll certainly look into it...
