I'm reading DoH at the moment. "Foggy Bottom" gets mentioned a few times,
where or what is it? is it slang for something?
I would be grateful if someone could help.

Thank you,

Cameron,

Foggy Bottom is, I believe, the training establishment favoured by either
CIA or FBI.

Perhaps others can be more specific.

Cheers,

Foggy Bottom is the nick-name for the State Department.

Not even close. (sorry). Foggy Bottom is where the Headquarters of the State
Department is located. When Foggy Bottom is mentioned, it is usually someone
talking about the SecState or using the State Dept in other means (CIA
transporting messages, etc.)

Foggy Bottom is the Washington, D.C. nickname for the headquarters of the
State Department, which is located in an area of the city called, no joke,
"Foggy Bottom," which is near the Georgetown part of the city (Foggy Bottom'
metro stop is right before the Georgetown stop, anyway).Originally, like
all of D.C., the area was a marsh, hence the name "Foggy Bottom."

As I said in another post, Foggy Bottom is the State Department. The Farm
is the CIA's training facility, and the FBI trains its agents at Quantico.

sorry, guy, Foggy Bottom is bureaucrat-babble for the State Department.
The Farm is the CIA's training center, and the FBI has Quantico. As for
why they call it Foggy Bottom, I haven't a clue. Maybe one of these
American types can explain better.

Foggy Bottom is slang for the Department of State. I believe it is placed in a
section of DC once called Foggy Bottom, as opposed to the mental state of
the occupants of Foggy Bottom.

Foggy Bottom refers to the State Department. If you look at a map of the
DC area, you will see an area that is listed as Foggy Bottom.

How it got its name and what it means, I don't know. If someone knows I
am interested.

The main building for the State Department is located in a low
lying are of Washington DC where the fog always seems to collect.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Foggy Bottom is a stop on the Washington DC
subway (the Metro), it's near George Washington Univ and near the
State Department (along with a bunch of other Federal agencies).

Wrong!
The establishment you are think of is known to the agency as "The Farm."
Foggy Bottom is US government agency slang for the State Department.

So there you go.

I believe that you are right about how Foggy Bottom got its name. It is a
low lying area near to the Potomac River which happens to be where the
State Department and George Washington University are located. The Foggy
Bottom metro stop is the stop that services this area. Because of this,
the State Department is often refered to as just "Foggy Bottom". Another
similar slang phrase is "the Hill" which can mean Congress or anything
else located on the Congressional hill (ie. There are some great
restaurants up on The Hill).

"Foggy Bottom" is an area of Arlington, Virginia very close to
Washington D.C.(across the Potomac River). It is also the name of
the Metro (subway) stop in that area. Some of the federal government
agencies are actually in suburban Virginia and Maryland. "Foggy
Bottom" refers to the swampy nature of this area before it was
drained and developed. Hope the geography lesson helps.

As a former Resident of the Nation's Capital, I can report that Foggy
Bottom is the area in which the State Department Main Building is
located. It was called Foggy Bottom because the land was a former Tidal
Mash, noted for it's Retention of morning fog, well after the fog had
dissipated in the rest of the local area. The retention of the name was
caused by the disdain by the rest of the inhabitants for the
Striped-Pants Cookie Pusher Gang.

to the Second World War as a mental institution.

Uh...no. Foggy Bottom is in the District. First of all, I live
there. Second of all, I job past the State Department every day, and it
is in Foggy Bottom. Lastly, when you ride the metro the stop says (and I
quote) "Foggy Bottom and the George Washington University...first stop in
the District of Columbia. Doors will open on your left" (If you are
coming from Van Dorn or the Pentagon.) This is the gospel truth...I live
there. Right across from the General Services Administration.

Way back when and before it was dredged out it was low enough to
be considered low ground and have more fog than other places.
And official DC and at least the Virginia suburbs are very
susceptible to fog.

So where is Capitol Hill? Ever seen a hill there? Yes there is
one but it is covered over with stone and the underground levels
have removed most of what was left. It was a steeper hill in
those days.

Browse around the Smithsonian pages and take a look at some of
their woodcuts and litheographs. There is a lot to learn if the
subject is of interest.

I would, too... But *only* if they promised not to rebuild elsewhere..
After all, places like the State Department are bad for the environment;
all that hot air must be at least partially responsible for global warming.

The cute thing about Foggy Bottom is that State's building is looked
down upon from small hill, atop which sits the Russian Embassy (though
last I note, which was some years ago, the Sovs werent allowed to move
in, as the US Embassy in Moscow had been riddled with bugs during its
construction). Anyone know if the Ruskies have moved in to their oh so
perfectly situated roost yet?

The name Foggy Bottom comes from the time George Washington had its first University in the area now surrounded by the State Department complex of buildings. There is also a metro station called Foggy Bottom in Washington, DC. Many thriller novels writers such as Tom Clancy mention "foggy bottom" without explaining it because I guess most Americans acquainted with the intelligence lingo easily picks that one up. I hope it helped you on your further reading. A hug, Oscar from Brazil, South America.
