I too read Dolores Claiborne before seeing the movie. Although the book
started off very slowly for me, I relly got into it and I now consider it
one of King's best. However, I disagree with you on some points. I
don't think the book was exactly butchered (to use your term). True,
they did inflate the character of Selena which I also did not like. I
also agree with you on the fact that Kathy (not Cathy) Bates is excellent
deserving of another Oscar nomination (if not win, but it's way too
early). As for the relationship between her and Vera Donovan, I agree it
was so much more in depth and intimately relayed in the book than it is
in the movie. However, I DON'T see how your friends thought it was a lesbain
relationship. Overall, I liked the movie very much and thought it was
very well done. Although, you should definitely read the book before seeing
the movie. I think you'll appreciate the movie (especially Kathy Bate's
performance) a lot more. Of course, that's just my HO.

I fully expected to not like this movie. I was pleasantly surprised.
Kathy Bates was just incredible. And she even had the accent down to the
"T" (I'm a New Englander, I know of where I speak, pun intended).

I agree though that Jennifer wasn't nearly as interesting to watch.

What I was most impressed with is the special effects/flashbacks/ and the
strange colorization for the solar eclipse (which I thought was captured
quite realistically).

I did not read the book, I gave up on Stephen King novels years ago, but
would put this movie up there with the two of his book turned movie
"Stand By Me" and "The Shining".

Kathy Bates has a wonderful sense of the characters she knows she will be
able to bring to life. She's really amazing!
