One thought occurred to me - If the time frame is ignored, could they be
read as though David Carver is the same person, the kid in Desparation
grows up to be the father in Regulators?

Any ideas?

I don't think so. There's just too many things that would keep me from
seeing that. Same names, same bad guy, etc.

Have you ever watched Star Trek? Seen the episodes where they
cross over into another dimension and meet themselves? Spock
has a goatee and is an evil, nazilike warlord. Or Kiri is like
Cleopatra?

That's my take on the pairing of Desperation and The Regulators.
They take place in different dimensions. The whole Carver family
has been tossed up into the air and come back down completely
different. David Carver has sort of become his own father and
Ralph has turned into his son. Johnny Marinville of Desperation
was a promising writer fallen on hard times. Johnny in The
Regulators was a hard-luck writer who hit the big times.
There is no linear relationship. At some point, time has diverged
in two different directions and David Carver, Sr. is not even
vaguely related to David Carver, Jr. any longer. There is no
chance that they could ever meet on the street (prior to the
bloody events of "Regulators", of course!) without exceeding
warp speed and crossing through a singularity where all worlds
are one...

You know, for all of its violence and brutality, I find The
Regulators to be every bit as redeeming as Desperation. For
a Bachman book, it ends on a seriously upbeat level. Lots of
people die in both books, many for no good reason at all, but
characters who are very unsympathetic in Desperation (Collie,
Audrey, for example, unsympathetic because by the time we get
to meet them, they've already met Tak) get their chance to
shine in this book.

And Johnny gets to shine in the both, in different ways.

<more snips>

A surprising ending to the actual story, in that I went into this book
expecting Bachman to either kill all those characters I liked, (ok, he
killed most of them) or to leave them as an emotional, psychological
basket-case.

Of course, seeing the galloping cloud after the final battle, was a
nice touch. Might just be enough to push a few of the survivors over
the edge...

I have a question: I was thrown at the end when the newly married bride
wrote to her friend about the gohsts of the boy and woman. This was post
marked in 1984. Yet the story takes place in the 90's. Was Seth even
alive in 1984? Would it not make better sence(sp) to have them been seen
in the late 90's? I am very confused on this point. Any ideas or
thoughts?

From Wings:

Brian, on seeing an attractive woman: Whoa, major hooters!
Woman, sharply, confronting him: What did you say?
Brian, extending his hand: Hooters, Major Frank Hooters, pleased to meet you...

Yes, I agree. And if the insight created through one of Stein's & mine
much talked-about coffe breaks is correct, this is perfectly logical.
The secret place Audrey goes to when Tak takes control is in 1981.
We think that Seth created this place for her, then somehow brought
her and himself there when they died.

i think basically this is showing that audrey and seth escaped to
audrey's fantasy world (right before they were shot) where she had her
conversations with her friend, which was based on a real occurence
that happened to audrey in '82. think of it as time travel.

My take on it was that both Audrey and Seth went to Audrey's safe place,
which was in the past. Thus, by the mid-80's, that location would have
built up a series of legends about the 'ghosts' living there.
