Anybody know? Sure, it's quiet (mostly) and it's
weird (kinda), but what else? There must be something
that is really good- something that appeals to him or
supports his writing. I'm trying to see what it is
about this city that makes it _his_ kinda place.

The most succinct answer of SK's to this question that I can
recall reading is "Because I'm a hick." There's also "Club Med
was full." I suspect he lives there because it's home.

I've been to different locations in Maine in my life. I've
never been to Bangor, but the rest of the state which I've
see, Camden, Cape Elizabeth, Rangley, Lewiston,
Bethel, Norway, Paris, etc. <oops, almost forgot Snowville!>
it's peaceful, has loads of character and the people are _nice_!
If I ever leave RI, it will be for Maine!

I suspect it's nothing more than "it's home". He's not a celebrity there
(this he's said himself), just Steve down the street. I have a feeling
that that alone makes it worth his while. Besides, where else _should_ he
live? :)

Reminds me of an interview with Michael Caine - someone bumped into
him, and said "my God it's YOU" and he said "yes, it's me" and the
person said to him "but you're HERE!" - and he said "well, I have to
be _somewhere_!".

I think it's because people don't bother him there. He's just treated
as "Steve, who lives up the road". If he lived in a big city or
someplace else, he'd be "Stephen King, author" *all* the time.

The fact that he was also born in Portland probably has a lot to do with
it, he lived in that state for most of his life.

I don't know, but I'll check out.
I'm going there in September to see places he talks about in his books.
I Know I don't need to search for Castle Rock as I read in a preface it
was totally invented. But I would like to know where you think I should
go.
Bangor of course! Well, the roas I'll take pass through Bangor, So it's
ok. I'll probably spend a night near there.

please give me advices.
(don't you have King's address? ;-)

Thanks

What the hell is wrong with Bangor? Nice city. Nice people. Beats the
livin' hell outta NYC or LA...

My cent (it HAS, after all, been a tight week) would have me say,
'Because he can'.
My concept of getting up to Bar Harbor is 'go to Bangor, hang a
right'. Sounds like a plan.
But that's just me and my strong affinity for the state. Any
vacationing experience that includes the Piskataqua (SP) bridge is
okay by my book. And I would live there in a heartbeat!

Well, really, if the question really is:

Why does Stephen King choose to live in Bangor, Maine?

Then I'd feel inclined to say: why not?
And, where else should they live?
And, everybody's gotta live somewhere. Look at me, just moved to a
suburb (uptownish too <eg>). Why not?
Why live in the country? Why live by the coast? Why live in the city?

Hey, why not?
