Don't read this if you have not read Desperation and do not want the
ending revealed.
At the end, when David found the excused early blue pass from "God" with
the note on it in Johny's handwriting, did it mean that johny is God
and, during the book was trying to find himself, or that he was just
God's messenger? Or do I misunderstand the whole thing and it means
something else? Any views will be appreciated.

I'd always taken it to be that Johnny is just a messenger of God...
I certainly never got the impression that Johnny *is* God.

Maybe Johnny was only the messenger of God, not God, but Johnny or his
likeness showed up in David's revelation trance (as revealed when David
recognized that Johnny in the Vietnam Picture was the guy in his dream
revelation) before johnny became converted to the cause. Maybe God
invaded Johnny's body after Johnny got his jolt, just as the bad force
took over the cop and others, but without destroying the host body or
taking over the host mind as did the bad force; and knowing he (or
she)was going to do this God appeared as Johnny in David's dream
revelation? What do yopu think does that work?

I took it to mean that "a part of him had died that day" (the day the
picture in his wallet was taken) He was in Vietnam, so I assumed
something bad happened that day that changed him forever. So the boy
David met was the part of Johnny that had died. I don't know...

In my atheistic opinion:

Johnny was doing God's work at the end, and the message he wrote on the
note to David was from him, only a mortal. But he understood from God,
basically how things were going to turn out.

David was being shown that this was all decided much earlier, by a
force that understood exactly how things would turn out at the
beginning. That terrible things had happened but it was necessary,
perhaps because of some limits God places on his involvement.

Or maybe not. Mike a newbie.

I took it that he died *EMOTIONALLY/MENTALLY* in Vietnam...
Secondly, NO, I don't think Johnny was God...
Third, I'm not sure that he was even God's messanger (seemed more like
God's PAWN to me...)
Last, I believe the letter to be from Johnny the Mortal...

What if Johnny visited Davids treehouse on his trip across
America? That could explain why he had the paper and why he was surprised
when David told him about the treehouse.
Just a thought,

I really like that idea. David did make Johnny turn his pockets inside out earlier though. Could have swapped it before though. I resurrected an 18 year old thread to comment on this. Sorry, I just finished the book this morning.

I just finished the book, it was one of my favorites, but I say that about every Stephen king book haha. But I believe johnny was (possessed by God) when he on the atv after David found him and tried to tell David he had a seizure but David knew he was lying and you could tell johnny was lying by the way he couldn't look David in the eyes. There was even a point in the book when johnny asked if someone was "possessed by God". That is the best conclusion I could make of this confusing ending. But very great book. Hope someone agrees this could be possible

The thread is 21 years old and counting. Here goes nothing:

Johnny isn't God. He isn't God's messenger, that is David. Johnny is like the kings in the Old Testament. If they listen to God's messenger then they succeed and if they don't then they will fail. Johnny, at the end, chose to follow.

The case of the excuses early pass is interesting because we know Johnny didn't have it. David had made Johnny strip before and never found it. That means that Johnny couldn't have found it before they met or even before they were ready to go into the China Pit. There is no way Johnny could have it other than by a miracle.

Which is why the last message is so meaningful to David. He understands that somehow God gave Johnny the pass and that it was a sign of love. God may be cruel, but He is also love. Just as God had taken David's old family, hopefully to Heaven with Pie but who knows, God has given David a new family with Steve and Mary as father and mother and Cynthia as his new sister. This makes David very much like Job who lost everything in seemingly overwhelming trials, especially his family, only to have everything he had lost restored, including a new family.
