**SPOILERS AHEAD**
The very last bit of the book, there is a letter written from one lady to
another. I don't have the book with me, so I don't remember the
names....but I'm thinking one of them is Melee, or something like that.....I
didn't connect these people with anyone else in the book.....what did I miss
and what was the purpose of this letter?
- Teri
The purpose of the letter is to show the reader that Carrie was not an isolated
incident; that TK is in actuality an inherited gene/trait, that it could (and
probably will) happen again, and also, I think, to leave open the possibility of
a sequel. Anyone else have some ideas?
Karen
I got the same impression, to leave the reader with the impression that the
"evil" still lurks in the world. Kind of the same thing he did in The Stand
where the Dark Man shows up elsewhere.

I'm all finished with it too, Teri ! :)
About the letter from 'Melia Jenks to Sandra Jenks... remember that
Margaret White's maiden name is Jenks, they are related, looks like we have
another little girl with the powers of TK coming up there.

Anybody else have any comments on Carrie? Comparing Carrie to King's more
recent works, you can tell a big difference, IMHO. I just wasn't as
spellbound by Carrie as I tend to be with some of his later works. But I
did still enjoy it.

~*~*~MAY CONTAIN SPOLERS BELOW*~*~*
In comparing the book to the movie, which made Sissy Spacek, John Travolta,
Amy Irving, PJ Soles , oh that whole cast famous (a much younger Edie
McClurg is in it too!! Edie was in Ferris Bueller as Grace, the school
secretary as well as a couple of other John Hughes movies that I love) there
of course was alot different. Did anyone remember there being a longer
sequence in the movie showing alot more of Carrie's "walk home" after the
prom? It is totally missed in the video version of the movie that I have,
and it's the most horrifying, most gripping part of the story IMHO! I alas,
didn't catch the movie when it was first released in theaters. And I loved
Piper Laurie as Margaret White.... what an actress!
But back to the book though... I found myself relating to Carrie more than
any of the other characters. I don't have any TK ability or anything like
that of course, but I related to her status as a "misfit" at Ewen High. In
high school, I was definately not one of the popular kids, I was awkward,
extremely shy, big, thick glasses, the classic dweeb. I've since left those
days behind thank goodness! LOL! I was picked on by a group of kids but not
nearly as horribly as Carrie White was. I think that sadly there's a Carrie
in every high school. You know.... doesn't fit in, etc... I'm not talking
about her "special power" here, just her treatment by the other kids at
Ewen.
I think that when Sue Snell asked Tommy Ross to take Carrie to the prom,
that she was most definately trying to ease her conscience about the shower
room incident. I really believe that Tommy started having feelings for
Carrie other than his initial ones of pity and of wanting to make Sue happy.
I think he started to actually like her.
I liked the background material interspersed throughout the story, the stuff
about TK and the interviews with the prom night survivors including Sue
Snell. It was quite interesting and made me want to find out a little bit
more about telekenesis. Until Carrie, I really never knew it existed. Is
it *really* a genetic thing passed down through generations?
Well, I have to run for now, but I'll input more thoughts as the discussion
rolls along. :) Looking forward to talking about it!
