Hello all,

It has been a while since I've posted, but
I've been keeping an eye on the NG (is
it just me, or is this group growing like a
beast in one of the mans storys). It's
good to see lots of interest.

A King related question, (kind of). In our
local News Paper they did a write up on
the Green Mile and a comment was made in passing,
that if it did flop out, Stephen would come
out of it with Bank Balance OK.

I know he is worth tens of millions, but can
anyone give me a figure of Net Worth and
yearly earnings?

Thanks.

WHAT? Does anyone besides me find this request invasive, impertinent,
annoying, and incredibly vulgar?

Oh absolutely.

I wonder if Peter Vucic -- equ...@iap.net.au -- would be willing to
furnish the World at large with the same information? Odds are he
wouldn't -- and if he did it voluntarily solely as the result of a
stranger's idle curiosity on a usenet newsgroup I'd have to pity him
deeply.

Deeply.

I have no problem with your question. I cheerfully tell anyone who
asks me what I make in a year. Questions like income, weight, age,
are not a big deal. I find nothing rude or "vulgar?" about it. I
mean, vulgar?? Come on, not exactly the right word to use to describe
this little question. Anyway, just thought I'd say that even though I
don't have an answer to your question.

Lighten up folks. This is the kind of crap that's been keeping me
away from newsgroups for the 4 years I've been on the net. And it
will probably be the thing that makes me leave the ngs as well. Petty
BS.

Hi Peter,

I think yearly earnings are in the $20-30 million dollar range
before taxes. I know he has enough money to buy the Boston Red Sox ($150
million) if he desire. He has joked that it may be the only way he'll
get decent seats.

Well, I find the question rude. But then I was raised to _never_
ask what a person earned. To tell the truth, I found the question
regarding King's home, and how to get there, strange too. I can't imagine
going to _look_ at a famous person's home... unless they were long-dead
and their home was a museum and there was some historical or educational
reason for doing so. It's too much like going to a zoo for my tastes.
Reminds me of that scene from ZPG. (Anyone else remember that movie? (G))

I'm now running (big time), I can see the flames
on the horizon and they cometh my way. I know
I should "Stop, Drop & Cover" for Peter has dropped
a high yield Nuclear bomb.

Hold on, before all of you jump onto Pete's
band-wagon (I have a feeling it will happen, cause
I know I probably would do the same thing).
Let me explain the reason why I asked the question.

I'm not a sufferer of "Tall poppy syndrome" and
not some crazed fanatic. In fact I"ve been reading
Stephen's work for about 11 years (not bad considering
it's almost half my age). Peter, your work stands out
from the multitudes as well (loved Shadowland).

From where I stood, I didn't think anyone would take
offence to that question (the more famous he becomes
the more happy we are for him).

Apart from the fact that figures have come up in the
Stephen King Companion and various news articles.
I would have thought that people carrying the burden
of fame, would be accustomed to fans asking that type
of question.

If I offended then I apologize, but I still feel it
is a legitimate question from his number one fan (
I know, I know, I'm just kidding).

Thanks for the flame Peter (It's a rare privilege
for this meager ass to get a flaming from a man of
standing).

Every year Fortune (or is it Forbes) publishes the worlds richest
people. Parade magazine just published an article about what the
typical person makes. Athletes and entertainment professional have
their salaries quoted all the time.

Net worth, annual income, etc. are normal topics when speaking of
celebrities. I'm sure Mr. Vucic was just asking a question that was
on a lot of peoples minds.

Now, I am not saying having the whole world know your net worth/Income
is right, I am just saying, in today's world this is normal, not
unexpected question.

Bob Green (from Chicago Tribune and other syndicated papers) wrote an
article about this very topic a few weeks ago.

It may be funny, maybe not, but here in Finland, before the 'new'
Intimity Protection Law was accepted about ten years ago, every
township (or local IRS) published its every citizen's taxable income
for the previous year.
The booklet was playfully called 'Gossip Calendar', for obvious
reasons :-)

What is the problem with people knowing how much a certain person
makes? I was raised that it isn't polite, so I don't ask other
people, but I really don't understand it, in most cases. I
suppose if you feel you don't make enough money, you might be
embarassed, but I don't really understand that, unless you're
socializing with snobs. A job is a job. What you make does not
indicate how good a person you are. Now, I can see you not
wanting to tell how much you make if you make *a lot* of money,
for fear that others would think you're bragging, or they might
think you've entered the "snob" category, but really, who would
want to hang out with that type of person? I can see why it
wouldn't be a good idea for coworkers to discuss salaries, since
bad feelings might come from it, and management might get pissed
off. Let's see... any other reasons? Definitely the "not
wanting to show your cards" during any possible salary
negotiations. But all those reasons don't seem to touch on this
societal taboo we have with how much we make. What's the cause
of it? And personally, I am always intrigued how much writers
earn. Are they as wealthy as we think they are? Do they ever
have normal financial difficulties like the rest of us?

Just some rambling thoughts on the subject. I'm not sure why
Peter (I keep having the *strong* urge to refer to him as "Mr.
Straub"...sigh) took such offense to the question, especially
since any answer that might have been given would undoubtedly be
just a guess, or a report from a magazine or something, and not
taken as the 100% truth.

Actually, Peter, I really would like to know. Why did you react
so strongly to the question?

Seems like the Sunday (or Monday) supplement in the Dallas Morning News
had a comparison of a bunch of celebrities vs "real-life joes." King was
listed at about $22 million/year (!!!)

Invasive:
Definitely not. S.K. is an extremely famous person and this type of
information has been out about him for years. It is not as if Equinox is asking
something that has been kept a well hidden secret for years (like the " Recipe
for the Secret sauce") just a piece of information that is public knowledge
about S.K. in a public forum from fans that are supposed to know an awful lot
about him.

Impertinent:
I cannot see how this could be conceived as being Rude or irrelevant. If
someone wants to get public information about a famous person, Why would it be
considered rude to ask those who should know???

Annoying:
Why should anyone find it annoying??? I cannot see the relevance of this
question.

Vulgar:
I cannot see an easier way of asking the question. He could have said
something like "I am considering starting a career in writing and was wondering
what a successful writer like Stephen King would make", but in total, The
question would not be different.

But I don't understand why you would get so bothered by Equinox asking???

Nearly everywhere I have worked had a policy of NOT discussing what you
earned with fellow employees, however everyone always managed to find
out what everyone else took home in their paycheck. There's a lot of
rude people in the world! The more you make, the more people want to
know how much it is. If your name happens to be famous, it's even
worse! C'est la vie!

My stepmother gave me a copy of Rose Madder a while back with two
snapshots of Stephen King's house enclosed in the pages. She grew up in
his hometown, and happened to be there on vacation. His house is
definitely well worth going to gawk at. It's absolutely, astoundingly
gorgeous!!! Looks as if it had been taken right out of a horror flick,
and comes complete with at least one three-headed dragon overlooking the
surrounding wrought iron fencing near the sign that says "NOTICE
Electronic Surveillance and ALarm Equipment is in use. Please do not
enter the grounds. Thank you"

Personally, I'd love to see it in person someday, if I ever get up that
way. Not to be a pest, or to invade anyone's privacy, but to admire it
like I would a painting in a museum. If the house belonged to Joe
Schmoe, it would still be worth a long gawk! ;)
